The best cloud storage sync setup depends on one practical choice: whether you want files stored on your computer as well as in the cloud, or available through a virtual drive without keeping your whole library locally. Mirrored sync gives you local copies and easier offline access but uses disk space. Streaming or virtual-drive access is designed to save local space, though selected offline files and local caching may still use it.

The available product documentation supports comparing these workflows, not naming a reliable overall winner: it does not establish comparable current prices, privacy terms, platform coverage, or independent performance results for all providers. Use the distinctions below to choose the kind of sync that fits your device and connectivity.

How to choose cloud storage with sync

Start with where you need your files to live. A mirrored folder keeps a local copy that syncs with the cloud; a streaming or virtual-drive model shows cloud files on your computer without downloading the entire library by default. Some services also let you choose which folders or files are local.

  • Choose a local copy if you work offline often or want the files physically stored on your computer. Allow for the storage space the mirrored files will use.
  • Choose streaming or a virtual drive if your library is larger than the space you want to give it on your computer. Check how the service handles offline access and local cache.
  • Check selective sync or online-only options if you need a mix of local and cloud-only files. Feature names and availability vary by service and operating system.

“Sync” does not always mean the same thing: it may refer to a mirrored local folder, selected local folders, or cloud files exposed through a virtual drive. Confirm the actual behavior in the desktop app for your operating system before moving a large library.

How the documented sync models compare

Service Local-storage approach Offline and space-saving notes Documented limit or qualification
pCloud Virtual Drive provides cloud access without local storage by default; its separate Sync feature mirrors a local folder with a location in pCloud. pCloud says Sync creates a local copy that can be used offline. Its desktop Offline Access guidance points users to Sync for selected cloud folders. “By default” does not mean a virtual drive can never use local space: offline copies use local storage.
Google Drive for desktop Streaming presents files on a virtual Drive; mirroring stores them in the cloud and on the local hard drive. Streaming is intended to avoid storing the full library locally. Virtual-drive access may still use local cache or selected offline files. Choose the mode based on local capacity and offline needs; the cited documentation does not establish comparative performance.
Dropbox Online-only files can free hard-drive space; selective sync is configured in the Windows or Mac desktop app. Its product documentation says files saved to the Dropbox folder synchronize automatically to mobile devices. This is a vendor feature description, not an independent speed or reliability result.
Sync.com Selective sync is one option for managing what occupies computer space; its help page also mentions Vault and moving the Sync folder to an external USB drive. A mobile “sync offline” feature is described for selected files. Sync.com documents a hard limit of 50,000 files per folder; publication date is not stated in the help result.

What each service’s sync workflow means

pCloud: separate virtual drive and mirrored Sync

pCloud distinguishes its virtual drive from its local Sync feature. The company’s help center describes pCloud Drive this way: “pCloud Drive: Works as a virtual drive and does not use local storage by default” (pCloud Drive vs (pCloud) Sync). Drive is the cloud-facing option; Sync connects a folder on your computer to a location in pCloud and reflects changes both ways.

For offline access on desktop, pCloud’s guidance says to use Sync, which creates a synchronized local copy of selected cloud folders. That copy occupies local storage, unlike the virtual-drive default (pCloud Offline Access).

Google Drive for desktop: streaming or mirroring

Google’s Drive for desktop help page says, “When streaming, files are located on a virtual Drive on your computer.” In mirror mode, files are stored both in the cloud and on the local hard drive. Streaming avoids keeping the full library locally by default, but selected offline files and local cache can still use disk space (Google Drive: Stream and mirror files).

Dropbox: online-only files and selective sync

Dropbox describes online-only files as a way to free hard-drive space. Its selective sync setting is managed in the Windows or Mac desktop app, allowing users to choose which folders sync to that computer. Dropbox also says files saved to its Dropbox folder synchronize automatically to mobile devices; treat this as the provider’s feature description rather than a measured performance claim (Dropbox: Make files online-only).

Sync.com: selective sync and a folder-count ceiling

Sync.com’s help center documents a hard limit of 50,000 files per folder. For users short on computer space, it suggests selective sync, Vault, or moving the Sync folder to a larger external USB hard drive. It also describes a mobile “sync offline” feature for selected files. These are provider-documented options; check the current app’s behavior and settings for your device (Sync.com: Syncing issues and troubleshooting).

Check these details before syncing a large library

Local storage and offline access

Estimate how much space a mirror would need, including room for files already on the computer. If you prefer streaming or online-only files, check how to mark specific items for offline use and whether the client caches recently opened files.

Folder flexibility and scale

Find out whether the service syncs arbitrary folders or uses a defined sync root, whether selective sync is available on your operating system, and whether the provider documents file-count or other library limits. Sync.com’s documented 50,000-file folder limit is a concrete example of why a very large, deeply populated folder may need planning.

Recovery and independent backup

A synchronized folder is not automatically a complete backup. A deletion or unwanted change may sync to other connected locations. Before relying on sync for protection, check the provider’s version history, deleted-file recovery, retention period, and whether backup is a separate feature. The product descriptions here do not establish comparable retention policies.

Privacy and price

Compare current regional plans and the provider’s encryption model, sharing controls, and terms from official pages before choosing. The documented workflow differences alone do not support a price or privacy ranking.

Which sync model fits your situation?

  • Your computer has ample space and you need offline access: consider a mirrored folder or local Sync feature. You will have a local copy, so allow for its disk use.
  • Your library is bigger than your available disk space: consider streaming, a virtual drive, online-only files, or selective sync. Confirm how to make important files available offline.
  • You need both local and cloud-only files: look for a service that offers selective sync or online-only controls, and verify that the controls work on your operating system.
  • You are syncing many files in one folder: check documented limits and consider organizing the library into smaller folders if the provider’s limit makes that necessary.
  • You need protection from accidental deletion or unwanted edits: assess recovery and backup separately from synchronization.
