The best open-ear earbuds depend first on how you want them to sit: clip-on buds grip or cuff the outer ear, while ear-hook models hang from it. For a low-profile fit, consider clip-ons such as Sony LinkBuds Clip or Shokz OpenDots; for workout retention, Shokz OpenFit Air 2 is an ear-hook alternative. Which open-ear earbuds are best for calls and running?
There is no single best shape for both. How do calls and sound hold up?
Open designs keep the ear less isolated from its surroundings, but they also have trade-offs: sound can leak, bass can be reduced, and wind can affect listening. A quiet home office and a busy street are very different call environments, so evaluate call claims in light of where you actually talk.

Sony advertises precise voice pickup and a Voice Boost listening mode on LinkBuds Clip. For Shokz OpenDots 2, Tom’s Guide found calls intelligible but the voice tinny. That same review said the earbuds were drowned out on noisy trains and planes, and their bass was weaker than sealed designs. These observations apply to the named models and review conditions, not every open-ear product.
If your priority is strong isolation or listening in a loud commute, an open-ear design may be the wrong form factor. Ambient awareness also does not guarantee safety: these earbuds do not make road use safe, and you should remain attentive to your surroundings.

What to know about workout ratings and battery claims
Check the rating and battery figure for the specific model rather than assuming all open-ear earbuds perform alike. Ratings indicate a product’s stated resistance classification; they are not a promise that it will withstand every exposure or workout condition.

What else should you compare before buying?
- Fit and retention: Decide whether a clip-on or hook better matches your ear shape and activity. If possible, check the return policy so you can assess comfort yourself.
- Your call environment: Look for model-specific call observations, and distinguish a maker’s microphone claims from independent listening tests. Wind and background noise can change the result.
- Isolation, leakage, and bass: Open designs trade a sealed fit for a more open presentation. If you need to shut out a noisy commute or prioritize strong bass, compare sealed alternatives as well.
- Resistance and battery: Confirm the exact model, regional listing, and the conditions behind any advertised battery figure before relying on it.
