Choose your next horror game by what you want to keep from the remaster: tight resource management, psychological unease, or supernatural ghost hunting. For a classic survival-horror route, look at the Alone in the Dark Anthology or the original Resident Evil games; for ghost-centered horror, try FATAL FRAME: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse; and for psychological horror, consider the original Silent Hill—if you can access it on your platform. These are preference-based picks, not a critic ranking, and storefront availability varies by region and edition.

Choose by the kind of horror you want

What you liked Start with Why it fits Access note
Resource-focused survival horror and older mechanics Alone in the Dark Anthology or classic Resident Evil Both offer a path toward earlier survival-horror entries rather than another recent remake. The Alone in the Dark Anthology is listed on Steam for PC. Capcom’s catalogue shows different Resident Evil editions on services including GOG and Steam; check the individual listing for your region and device.
Psychological horror and an unsettling setting Original Silent Hill Harry Mason searches for his missing daughter after a crash near the town. Konami’s European page lists PlayStation, PS Vita and PSP, but does not establish current store access.
Ghosts, investigation and a distinctive combat premise FATAL FRAME: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse The Camera Obscura is used to photograph and seal away ghosts. Nintendo’s US store lists the game for Switch. Verify availability in your region before buying.

If you have just finished a Resident Evil remaster, the older entries may feel like a natural next step, but you do not have to follow a series chronology to choose one. PlayStation notes that individual Resident Evil entries tell complete stories in isolation, with connective narrative across the series (PlayStation’s series guide). If you finished a Silent Hill remaster, the original may be the more direct historical comparison, though current access is less certain.

For classic survival-horror mechanics: Alone in the Dark and Resident Evil

Alone in the Dark Anthology: the older PC route

Steam’s Alone in the Dark Anthology includes Alone in the Dark, Alone in the Dark 2 and Alone in the Dark 3, and presents the collection as 1990s survival horror for PC. Steam identifies Infogrames as developer and THQ Nordic as publisher. It is a way to reach the older entries, not a promise that their controls or compatibility have been modernized. Check current system requirements and support information before purchase.

Resident Evil: choose an edition, not just a title

Capcom Town’s survival-horror collection lists the original Resident Evil (1996), Resident Evil 2 (1998), Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999), Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil HD Remaster, alongside other games including Dino Crisis. Some listings identify GOG or Steam, but the catalogue does not make every edition available on every platform or in every region. Confirm the exact release before choosing: an original game, remaster and remake are different versions, even when they share a title.

For psychological horror: the original Silent Hill

Konami’s European page for SILENT HILL describes Harry Mason’s search for his missing daughter after a car crash near the town. It identifies the original as a 1999 release and lists PlayStation, PS Vita and PSP. Those are historical platform listings, not confirmation that the game is currently purchasable or playable on a modern console in your region. Check the relevant regional store or hardware support details first.

If you want to compare the original with a newer presentation, Konami describes SILENT HILL 2 (2024) as a full remake of the PlayStation 2 game first released in 2001. Its European listing gives an October 8, 2024 release date and names PlayStation 5 and PC/Steam. It is a modern remake, not an older original to play after a remaster, so treat it as a comparison option rather than a classic-era pick.

For supernatural ghost horror: Fatal Frame

FATAL FRAME: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse focuses on girls who return as teenagers to Rogetsu Isle, where the Camera Obscura lets them photograph and seal away ghosts. Nintendo’s US Switch store listing says the game originally released in Japan in 2008 as the fourth entry in the series and returned with upgraded graphics. It lists puzzle-solving and survival elements and a Switch release date of March 9, 2023. The game suits players who want a ghost-centered premise and camera-based encounters rather than familiar weapon-led survival horror. Nintendo’s listing is for Switch in the US; verify regional and platform availability before acting on it.

For another series option, KOEI TECMO America’s January 27, 2026 announcement describes FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE as a complete remake of the second game, following twin sisters through an abandoned village with the Camera Obscura. The announcement said a demo would arrive March 5, 2026 for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC via Steam. Because that announced demo date has passed, check the publisher’s current page or your platform store for the latest release and availability details: KOEI TECMO America’s announcement.

Check the edition and platform before you commit

  • Look for the version label. A remaster upgrades an existing release; a remake rebuilds it; a re-imagination may reinterpret it. For example, THQ Nordic calls its newer Alone in the Dark a “re-imagination” of the classic, set in the gothic American South, while the Steam anthology gathers the older first three games. The newer game has players control Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood as they explore, fight monsters, solve puzzles and uncover Derceto Manor’s story (THQ Nordic’s Alone in the Dark page).
  • Match the listing to your hardware. A PC catalogue entry does not guarantee play on a console, and a regional store page does not prove availability everywhere. Check the exact edition, platform and region.
  • Be cautious with older releases. The existence of an older game listing does not establish comfortable controls, compatibility with current systems, or continued store access. Verify those details for the specific device you own.
