The best Chromebooks 2026 buyers can get are partner-made ChromeOS laptops, not Google-built computers: the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is the premium best-overall candidate, while the ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 is the strongest sub-$400 option. The right choice depends on your apps, screen preference, update-expiration date, and exact configuration.
Google does not currently sell a mainstream first-party Chromebook in this lineup. Acer, ASUS, Lenovo, Samsung, HP, and other manufacturers build the hardware, while Google develops ChromeOS and defines the Chromebook Plus category. Google describes Chromebook Plus as a higher-spec Chromebook category rather than a separate operating system; see Google’s Chromebook and Chromebook Plus explanation.
Key takeaways
- The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is the premium best-overall candidate, with 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a 14-inch 1920×1200 display, a 2.78-pound listed weight, and Google-claimed battery life of up to 17 hours.
- The ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 is the clearest lower-cost recommendation at a Google-listed starting MSRP of $369, with an Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a 14-inch Full HD display.
- The Acer Chromebook Plus 516 is the strongest large-screen value candidate, combining a 16-inch 1920×1200 display with a $479 starting MSRP and Google-claimed battery life of up to 15.5 hours.
- The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 is the most clearly supported 2-in-1 choice, but its Intel and MediaTek versions have materially different processors, memory, storage, prices, and battery claims.
- Chromebook support is model-specific: check the exact Auto Update Expiration date in Google’s policy table before buying, especially when considering clearance or refurbished hardware.
- ChromeOS works best with web apps, Google Workspace, Android apps, Linux applications, and cloud services; Windows-only software, professional Adobe workflows, CAD, local AAA gaming, and specialized enterprise applications may require Windows or macOS.

Which Chromebook is best overall in 2026?
The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is the best-overall candidate for buyers who want a lightweight, high-memory Chromebook and can justify a $749 starting MSRP. Google lists a MediaTek Kompanio Ultra processor, 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, a 14-inch 1920×1200 display, a 2.78-pound weight, and battery life of up to 17 hours for the listed configuration.
The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 has the strongest specification balance in this shortlist. Sixteen gigabytes of memory should be useful for large numbers of browser tabs, video calls, Google Workspace, Android apps, and some Linux workloads. The 16:10 display is also better suited to documents and split-screen work than a conventional 16:9 Full HD panel.
However, the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 should not be called an unquestionable winner without independent testing of keyboard comfort, trackpad quality, webcam and microphone performance, speakers, sustained speed, screen brightness, and real-world battery life. Google’s “up to 17 hours” figure is not a promise of 17 hours during a demanding workday.

Buy it if: you want a portable premium Chromebook with generous memory and storage, and you primarily use ChromeOS-compatible software.
Consider the ASUS CX34 or Acer 516 instead if: you want most of the Chromebook Plus experience at a much lower price.
Avoid it if: you need Windows-only applications, local AAA gaming, or professional software that costs less to run on a Windows laptop or MacBook.
Which is the best Chromebook under $400?
The ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 is the clearest sub-$400 recommendation in the researched 2026 lineup. Google lists the CX34 from $369 with an Intel Core i3 processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a 14-inch 1920×1080 display, and claimed battery life of up to 10 hours.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The CX34 reaches the sensible baseline for a new general-purpose Chromebook: 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and a Full HD display. That makes it a more convincing choice than an extremely cheap Chromebook with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a low-resolution panel, or a short remaining support period.
The $369 price is a starting MSRP rather than a guaranteed street price or stock status. Check whether the exact CX34 configuration is available, and inspect the display brightness, color coverage, webcam quality, chassis materials, storage speed, and fan noise before ordering. A sale-priced Acer or Lenovo model may be better if it offers a brighter display or newer processor for similar money.
There is not enough verified current evidence in this research to name one universally best conventional Chromebook below $300. In that price range, prioritize a recent model, 8GB of RAM where possible, a 1920×1080 display, and a long remaining Auto Update Expiration date rather than choosing solely by sticker price.
Is Chromebook Plus worth paying for?
Chromebook Plus is usually worth considering for most new buyers because the category targets more dependable multitasking, stronger processors, at least 8GB of RAM in the listed models, more storage, Full HD-or-better displays, improved video-call hardware, and newer productivity or AI features where supported.
Rank #2
- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
| Tier | Best for | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional Chromebook | Basic browsing, streaming, email, and light schoolwork | Slowdowns, poor screens, limited storage, or short remaining support |
| Chromebook Plus | Most buyers, multitasking, school, remote work, and video calls | The Plus label does not guarantee a premium chassis, screen, speakers, or battery |
| Premium Chromebook Plus | Travel, heavy web workloads, better displays, and long ownership | Diminishing value compared with Windows laptops and MacBooks at similar prices |
Chromebook Plus does not make every model equally fast. Processor generation, cooling, memory, storage type, display resolution, weight, battery capacity, and software configuration still differ. A $369 Chromebook Plus can be a better value than a $749 model for ordinary browsing and schoolwork, while the more expensive model may justify itself through memory, portability, display quality, or battery performance.
Which Chromebook has the best large screen?
The Acer Chromebook Plus 516 is the strongest large-screen value candidate. Google lists a 16-inch 1920×1200 display, an Intel i3-1315U processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, a $479 starting MSRP, and claimed battery life of up to 15.5 hours.
The 16:10 aspect ratio gives the Acer 516 more vertical workspace than a 15.6-inch 16:9 Full HD laptop, which helps with spreadsheets, documents, coding, accessibility, and two-window layouts. The larger panel is also easier to view from a distance.
The Acer Chromebook Plus 515 is the lower-cost alternative. It starts at $429.99 and has a 15.6-inch Full HD display, an Intel Core i3-1305 processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and Google-claimed battery life of up to 10 hours. The 515 is attractive when price matters more than vertical screen space.

Its $749 starting configuration includes a 15.6-inch Full HD OLED panel, Intel Core i3, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. OLED provides deeper contrast and more visually impressive movies, but OLED laptops can cost more and may involve trade-offs involving reflections, brightness behavior, battery life, or PWM sensitivity.
| Model | Screen | Starting MSRP | Best reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acer Chromebook Plus 515 | 15.6-inch 1920×1080 | $429.99 | Lowest listed price for a large screen |
| Acer Chromebook Plus 516 | 16-inch 1920×1200 | $479 | More vertical workspace and the longest listed battery claim among these large-screen options |
| Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus | 15.6-inch Full HD OLED | $749 | OLED contrast and thin-and-light positioning |
All three screen specifications and prices are from Google’s product lineup. A large screen improves productivity but generally makes a laptop less convenient to carry, so check the actual weight and charger size.
Which Chromebook is best for students?
The best student Chromebook depends on the school’s required software, but a 14-inch Chromebook Plus is the safest general recommendation for browser-based learning, Google Workspace, school portals, documents, video calls, and everyday portability.
The ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 is the budget choice for students who need a capable browser laptop near $369. The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is better for students who carry the computer frequently and want more memory and storage. The Acer Chromebook Plus 516 or 515 makes more sense when spreadsheets, split-screen research, accessibility, or a large viewing area matter more than portability. The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 is the option for handwritten notes and occasional tablet use.

TechRadar identifies the HP Chromebook Plus 15.6-inch as a student all-rounder at $549.99, £449.99, or AU$749, while warning that demanding video editing and 3D rendering can make Chromebooks unsuitable. That is an editorial recommendation, not a replacement for testing the exact HP configuration; see TechRadar’s student Chromebook coverage.
Before buying for a school course, check whether the student needs desktop Microsoft Office, Adobe applications, CAD, engineering software, specialized nursing or science programs, professional audio tools, or 3D software. Microsoft 365 web apps may work well, but browser versions are not identical to desktop Office, and school administrators may block Linux, Android apps, extensions, or developer features.
Which Chromebook 2-in-1 should you buy?
The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 is the most clearly supported current 2-in-1 candidate in the researched lineup. A convertible Chromebook is useful for handwritten notes, presentations, recipes, media, Android apps, and occasional tablet use.

| MediaTek | Kompanio Ultra 910 | 12GB RAM, 256GB storage | $699 | Up to 17 hours |
These are materially different laptops, not interchangeable versions. The Intel model offers a different processor and substantially more listed storage, while the MediaTek model has more memory and the longer Google-claimed battery rating. Google notes that the MediaTek battery figure is based on pre-production units and a specified ChromeOS version, so independent testing deserves particular attention.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not assume every Spin 514 includes a stylus. Confirm touchscreen technology, pen compatibility, whether a pen is bundled, hinge quality, tablet weight, keyboard comfort, and fan noise for the exact model number. If you will never use tablet mode, a clamshell Chromebook usually offers better value and less mechanical complexity.
How much RAM and storage should a Chromebook have?
Choose 8GB of RAM and at least 128GB of storage for a new general-purpose Chromebook unless the budget is extremely tight. Choose 12GB or 16GB of RAM for heavy multitasking, Linux, frequent video calls, many browser tabs, or longer ownership.
| Specification | Practical recommendation | Suitable use |
|---|---|---|
| 4GB RAM | Only for light use and very tight budgets | Basic browsing, email, and streaming |
| 8GB RAM | Minimum sensible target for most new buyers | School, office web apps, video calls, and ordinary multitasking |
| 12GB RAM | Useful for heavier multitasking | Many tabs, Android apps, Linux, and longer ownership |
| 16GB RAM | Best for demanding ChromeOS workloads | Large tab sets, Linux containers, development, and heavy multitasking |
| 64GB storage | Acceptable only for cloud-first users | Mostly online files and few local apps |
| 128GB storage | Sensible baseline | Most school, home, and office users |
| 256GB storage | Better for local files and apps | Android apps, Linux containers, photos, and offline video |
| 512GB storage | Useful when the price premium is small | Large offline libraries and frequent local work |
Google’s current configurations illustrate the range: the ASUS CX34 has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, the MediaTek Acer Spin 514 has 12GB and 256GB, and the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 has 16GB and 256GB.
What Chromebook processor should you choose?
For most buyers, Intel Core i3 or Core 3 and AMD Ryzen 3-class processors are a good baseline; Core i5, Core 5, Core 7, and Ryzen 5 models are more appropriate for sustained multitasking, Linux, and demanding web applications.
- Entry-level Intel Celeron, Intel N-series, and low-end MediaTek: suitable for browsing, streaming, and basic schoolwork, but more vulnerable to slowdowns.
- Intel Core i3/Core 3 and AMD Ryzen 3: a practical general-purpose tier for multitasking and video calls.
- Intel Core i5/Core 5/Core 7 and Ryzen 5: better for heavier browser workloads, Linux, and sustained multitasking.
- MediaTek Kompanio Ultra: evaluate the exact device using independent performance, compatibility, and battery testing rather than assuming all ARM Chromebooks are either slow or superior.
Processor branding is not a complete performance ranking. A newer low-power processor may provide better efficiency than an older higher-numbered chip, while cooling, memory, storage, and ChromeOS optimization affect sustained responsiveness.
What display should a Chromebook have?
Prefer a 1920×1080 or 1920×1200 display, with 16:10 generally better for productivity than 16:9. Avoid 1366×768 panels unless the lowest possible price is more important than viewing comfort.
- IPS: usually the safer choice for productivity, viewing angles, cost, and predictable battery behavior.
- OLED: best for contrast and movies, but check reflections, brightness behavior, battery impact, and PWM sensitivity.
- 16:10: provides more vertical room for documents, webpages, and split-screen work.
- Touch: helpful for Android apps and 2-in-1 use, but it does not imply that a stylus is included.
- Brightness and color: verify separately; resolution alone does not establish display quality.
Google’s current listings show the practical differences: the ASUS CX34 uses 14-inch 1920×1080, the Acer 516 and Lenovo Plus 14 use 1920×1200 panels, and the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus uses a 15.6-inch Full HD OLED display.
How long do Chromebooks receive updates?
Chromebook update support is model-specific, and the exact Auto Update Expiration date is one of the most important buying facts. A low-priced Chromebook with only a short support period remaining can be worse value than a more expensive new model.
Google’s Auto Update policy table currently lists examples including the Acer Chromebook Plus 514 CB514-6H/CB514-6HT through June 2035, the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 CP514-4HN through June 2032, and a Lenovo Chromebook Plus (14-inch, 10) entry through June 2035. The table also contains a “Chromebook Plus 14” entry through June 2033, but the retail Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 product page must be matched to the exact board or model identifier before using that date. Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus support should likewise be verified by exact model identifier rather than product family name. Check Google’s Auto Update policy table for the current model-level date.
Google says ChromeOS devices released in 2021 or later automatically receive extended updates while retaining access to the Google Play Store and Android apps. Older eligible devices may require administrator opt-in, and entries marked with an asterisk have special conditions; see Google’s extended-update guidance.
Rank #4
- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
How to check a Chromebook’s support date
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Open the device’s update information and identify the exact model or board.
- Match the exact identifier against Google’s Auto Update policy table.
- Prefer a model with many years of support remaining, not simply the lowest price.
Google’s consumer guidance identifies the Auto Update Expiration date as the reliable way to judge a Chromebook’s age and remaining official support. The Google Chromebook support instructions explain where to find the relevant information.
Can Chromebooks run Windows or Mac software?
Chromebooks can run web applications, Google Workspace, supported Android apps, Linux applications, remote-desktop sessions, and cloud services, but ChromeOS is not a drop-in replacement for Windows or macOS.
| Requirement | Chromebook fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Google Workspace and browser-based school portals | Usually strong | Offline access, extensions, school administrator restrictions, and required peripherals |
| Microsoft 365 | Web apps generally workable | Desktop Office features, macros, advanced add-ins, and offline requirements |
| Adobe Premiere Pro or After Effects | Poor fit for the full desktop workflow | Whether a web or Android alternative meets the required codecs, effects, and export performance |
| CAD and engineering suites | Usually poor fit | Exact application, GPU needs, plugins, licensing, and school or employer support |
| Professional audio | Configuration-dependent and often limited | DAW, plugins, interfaces, drivers, and latency requirements |
| Local AAA gaming | Generally poor fit | Steam support, anti-cheat, game compatibility, mods, and graphics performance |
Linux support does not guarantee GPU acceleration, driver support, peripheral compatibility, virtualization, or enterprise approval. “Works in the browser” also does not mean that the full desktop application is available.
ChromeOS Flex can revive some older PCs, but ChromeOS Flex is not identical to a certified Chromebook. Google says ChromeOS Flex devices do not automatically manage or update BIOS or UEFI firmware in the same way as ChromeOS devices, and ChromeOS Flex does not provide the normal Google Play Store and Android-app experience. See Google’s ChromeOS Flex differences and certified-device guidance.
Are Chromebooks good for gaming?
Chromebooks can be suitable for browser games, supported Android games, and cloud gaming, but modern native PC gaming is not a Chromebook strength.
- Browser and Android gaming: capable Chromebook Plus hardware is the safer choice, but individual game support varies.
- Cloud gaming: depends more on internet quality, latency, service subscription, and controller support than on Chromebook specifications alone.
- Native PC gaming: choose a Windows laptop or handheld PC if you need Steam compatibility, anti-cheat support, mods, or strong local graphics performance.
Which Chromebook is best for travel and remote work?
The Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 is the travel-oriented candidate because Google lists it at 2.78 pounds, while the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook Plus is the display-oriented thin-and-light alternative with a 15.6-inch OLED screen and 256GB of storage.
For remote work, prioritize a comfortable keyboard, a usable webcam and microphone, USB-C charging, stable Wi-Fi, enough RAM for video calls and browser tabs, and a screen that remains comfortable at your normal brightness. A claimed battery number cannot replace independent testing: Google and review laboratories use different brightness levels, workloads, browsers, and test methods. Tom’s Guide, for example, describes a continuous Wi-Fi web-browsing test at 150-nit brightness; its results should not be compared directly with Google’s Power Qualification Test figures. See Tom’s Guide’s Chromebook testing and battery methodology.
What are the major Chromebook trade-offs?
ARM versus Intel
ARM-based Chromebooks may be cooler, quieter, and more efficient, while Intel models may be the safer choice for some Linux, enterprise, peripheral, and compatibility requirements. Neither platform is universally better; evaluate the exact workload and device.
2-in-1 versus clamshell
A 2-in-1 adds tablet and presentation flexibility, but it can cost more, weigh more, and contain more mechanical complexity. A clamshell is usually better value when tablet mode will rarely be used.
New versus refurbished
A refurbished premium Chromebook can be good value only when the seller clearly provides the exact model number, remaining Auto Update Expiration date, battery condition, charger, return policy, screen condition, and enterprise-enrollment status.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBe especially cautious if a used Chromebook displays an organization login or administrator message. A previously managed device may remain enterprise-enrolled after resale, so buy from a reputable refurbisher with a clear device-wipe process and return policy.
Best Value
- Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
- 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
- 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
- Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
- Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver
When should you buy a Windows laptop or Mac instead?
Choose Windows or macOS instead of a Chromebook when your work depends on full desktop applications, local graphics performance, specialized drivers, or large offline workflows.
- Desktop Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, or similar professional editing suites
- Full Microsoft Office with macros, advanced add-ins, or specialized offline features
- CAD, architecture, engineering, and 3D-rendering software
- Local AAA PC gaming, extensive Steam libraries, anti-cheat systems, or game mods
- Professional music production requiring specific plugins, interfaces, or hardware drivers
- Specialized enterprise, medical, laboratory, or database software
- Workflows that require extensive local storage and no dependable internet connection
A MacBook Air is the better alternative for premium hardware, macOS-exclusive software, and users already invested in Apple devices. A Windows laptop is generally the more flexible choice for desktop applications, local gaming, CAD, Adobe workflows, and broad peripheral compatibility.
Chromebook buying checklist
- Confirm the applications first. Test the exact web, Android, Linux, or remote-desktop version of every essential application.
- Choose at least 8GB of RAM for a new general-purpose Chromebook.
- Choose 128GB of storage as a practical baseline; select 256GB if you keep files, Android apps, photos, or Linux containers locally.
- Prefer 1920×1080 or 1920×1200. Avoid 1366×768 unless price is the overriding concern.
- Compare the exact processor and configuration. Do not assume two versions of one product family perform or last equally long.
- Check the exact Auto Update Expiration date before buying new, discounted, or refurbished hardware.
- Separate MSRP from sale price. Google-listed starting prices are reference points, not guaranteed retailer prices.
- Check portability. Large screens are easier for spreadsheets but less convenient for travel.
- Confirm pen support. A touchscreen or Spin designation does not prove that a stylus is included.
- Inspect used-device status. Verify battery health, charger inclusion, return rights, and that the device is not enterprise-enrolled.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Chromebooks worth buying in 2026?
Chromebooks are worth buying in 2026 for browser-based work, Google Workspace, school portals, streaming, Android apps, Linux applications, and cloud services. Chromebooks are a poor fit when you require desktop Adobe software, CAD, specialized enterprise applications, local AAA gaming, or other Windows- or macOS-specific programs.
Are Chromebook Plus laptops faster than regular Chromebooks?
Chromebook Plus laptops generally offer stronger baseline hardware, including more RAM, better processors, more storage, Full HD-or-better displays, and improved video-call hardware. Chromebook Plus is not a guarantee of identical performance or premium build quality; the exact processor, cooling, screen, and configuration still matter.
How many years do Chromebooks last?
A Chromebook’s official software-support life depends on its exact Auto Update Expiration date, not just its brand or product family. Check the model identifier in Google’s Auto Update policy table before buying, because two similar-looking versions can have different support dates.
Can Chromebooks run Microsoft Office?
Chromebooks can generally use Microsoft 365 web apps, but browser-based Microsoft Office is not identical to desktop Office. Buyers who need macros, advanced add-ins, specialized offline features, or full desktop compatibility should choose Windows or macOS unless the exact workflow has been tested.
Can Chromebooks run Steam and PC games?
Some Chromebooks can support selected Steam or Linux games, and Chromebooks can also run browser, Android, and cloud games. A Chromebook is generally not the practical choice for a large native PC library, anti-cheat-dependent games, mods, or demanding local AAA gaming.
Is 8GB of RAM enough for a Chromebook?
Eight gigabytes of RAM is enough for most new Chromebook users doing schoolwork, web browsing, office web apps, video calls, and ordinary multitasking. Choose 12GB or 16GB for many open tabs, Linux containers, frequent video calls, heavier Android apps, or longer ownership.
The Bottom Line
For most buyers, start with an 8GB Chromebook Plus model rather than the cheapest conventional Chromebook. Choose the ASUS Chromebook Plus CX34 when the budget is close to $369, the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 for a large 16-inch display, the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 514 for convertible use, and the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 when premium portability, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage justify the $749 starting MSRP. Before paying, verify the exact configuration, current street price, required applications, and Google Auto Update Expiration date.
