Spoiler warning: this guide covers the main quest The Battle of Kaer Morhen, which follows The Isle of Mists. It also names the outcome of the final stand.
The most favorable survival outcome comes from decisions made before the council meets. Recruit every ally available in the earlier Brothers in Arms quests, and send Keira Metz to Kaer Morhen. Keira is the character who can save Lambert. Vesemir’s death is scripted and no choice prevents it. The two council decisions, one for the laboratory and one for the workshop, change tactics and rewards rather than the fixed story outcome, so the “best” option depends on what you want from the run.
Recruit allies before the battle
Ally recruitment happens in earlier quests, not at the council. The quest walkthroughs identify six possible allies:
- Ermion
- Hjalmar
- Roche
- Letho
- Zoltan
- Keira Metz
Every recruited ally appears in the fight. Having all six recruited earns an additional 1,000 XP, according to the Witcher.tools walkthrough (the page does not state a publication date). Availability depends on how far you have progressed and on earlier choices. If you are already standing at the battle and have missed a recruitment, that ally is probably no longer available, so check your progress before starting the quest.

Keira and Lambert: the one survival decision
Keira’s recruitment is the clearest character-survival decision tied to this battle. The sources describe two branches for Lambert:
- Keira sent to Kaer Morhen: she intervenes and saves Lambert.
- Keira absent: Geralt must stay and help Lambert defeat the five attackers. If Lambert is left alone, he dies.
Council choice one: the laboratory
At the laboratory you choose between two uses of the space. The options trade immediate supplies for an in-battle tactical effect.

Council choice two: the workshop
The workshop decision contrasts a defensive fix with a weapon reward.

Vesemir’s death is fixed
Vesemir dies during the final stand regardless of earlier recruitment, the laboratory choice, the workshop choice, or how you fight. Plan around keeping Lambert and the rest of your allies alive, not around saving Vesemir.

Choosing by your own criterion
Sources do not establish one combination of council choices that is best for every player. Pick the criterion first:
- Character survival: recruit Keira and send her to Kaer Morhen. This is the only branch that saves Lambert without requiring Geralt to hold the line beside him.
- Tactical help: choose the Witcher traps for the woods, or repair the wall to stop the portal at the breach.
- Immediate reward: choose the potions for listed supplies and XP, or clear the armory for the Rose of Shaerrawed.
- Timing: ally recruitment is only possible in earlier quests, so decide on allies before reaching the battle.
How reliable these details are
The walkthroughs used here are fan-maintained guides, not official game scripts or publisher documentation. They agree on the choice outcomes described above, but they do not state which game version they were written against, and they are not a substitute for checking the in-game journal or your own save. The XP values are in-game reward figures, not measured test results.
