The cheapest VPN is not always the one with the lowest number on its pricing page. A long-term plan usually shows a small monthly equivalent, but you pay the whole term up front, and the renewal price can differ from the introductory rate. A monthly plan costs more per month but lets you stop sooner. Before choosing, compare the full amount charged at checkout, the length of the first term, the renewal price, and whether tax is added.
Why the headline monthly price can mislead
Most VPN providers present two different figures. The first is the monthly billing price on a month-to-month plan. The second is the introductory monthly equivalent of a longer plan, calculated by dividing the total initial charge by the number of months it covers. Both are real, but they answer different questions. The monthly price tells you what a short trial of the service costs. The equivalent tells you what the commitment costs per month, provided you stay for the whole term and do not stop paying at renewal.
Three numbers belong together on any comparison: the total charged today, the length of the initial term, and the price charged when the term ends. If one of them is missing, the low figure you see is incomplete.
What the reported prices show
A September 30, 2026 Tom’s Guide roundup of cheap monthly VPN plans, Tom’s Guide, “The cheapest monthly VPN plans in 2026”, lists the following figures. The article ranks providers on price alongside privacy, streaming performance and ease of use.

These are the publication’s figures as of its September 30, 2026 date. They are not a guarantee of what you will be charged, and they do not describe how the discounts are billed. Prices vary by country, currency, tax treatment and plan tier, so treat them as a starting point for checking your own checkout page rather than as a universal price list.
The table also does not rank providers on privacy, streaming access or usability. Those criteria are named in the article’s framework, but the figures above answer only the price question.

Monthly plans: higher price, fewer commitments
A monthly plan suits short projects, a trip, or a test period. Its advantage is that the amount you pay is small and the period you are locked in is short. Its disadvantage is that the per-month cost is usually higher than the introductory equivalent on a long plan. If you expect to use a VPN for a year, a monthly plan can cost substantially more over that year than a discounted term, even though each individual payment is smaller.
Long-term plans: lower monthly equivalent, larger upfront charge
A long-term plan lowers the monthly equivalent by spreading a discounted total over several months or years. The trade-off is that the full initial charge arrives at once, and you may not get a refund for the unused portion. Before buying, check the refund window and whether it applies to the whole term or only to the first days.

Read the billing schedule, not the headline
Each provider handles its initial term and renewal differently. The three examples below come from official provider pages retrieved on October 7, 2026. Confirm them at checkout, because they change.
Proton VPN: a 24-month discounted term
Proton’s signup page states: “The specially discounted price of US$71.76 (excl. tax) is valid for the first 24 months.” Dividing US$71.76 by 24 gives US$2.99 per month, which matches the cheapest figure in the table above. That is arithmetic on the stated total, not a separate Proton claim. The price excludes tax, so the amount you actually pay may be higher. Proton also says renewal pricing is subject to change under its terms and conditions, so the price after the first 24 months is not fixed by the signup offer.

NordVPN: automatic renewal at the then-current price
NordVPN’s pricing page says subscriptions renew automatically for another term at the then-applicable price unless you cancel. Its displayed savings compare the introductory monthly price, including any extra months offered, with the current monthly price of annual renewal. In practice, the saving shown on the page is measured against the renewal rate, not against a fixed long-run price. If you want to avoid being charged again, cancel before the renewal date and confirm the cancellation in your account settings.

ExpressVPN: a 28-month initial term
ExpressVPN’s order page offers Basic, Advanced and Pro plans on a two-year-plus-four-month initial term, which is 28 months in total. The page shows a billed total for that initial period and a stated annual auto-renewal amount afterwards. The figures themselves are not reproduced here, because they change. When you compare, record the initial total, the number of months it covers, and the annual renewal amount for each tier you consider.

Checklist before you subscribe
- Note the total charged today, not only the monthly equivalent.
- Confirm the length of the initial term in months.
- Find the renewal price and the date it applies.
- Check whether tax is added on top of the displayed price, and in which currency you will be billed.
- Read the refund terms for the full term, including the cancellation window.
- Confirm which plan tier includes the features you need, such as the streaming or device support you expect to use.
- Set a reminder before renewal to cancel if you do not want to continue.
Which plan fits
If you need a VPN for a few weeks, choose a monthly plan and accept the higher per-month cost in exchange for flexibility. If you expect to use the same service for a year or more, a long-term plan usually gives the lower monthly equivalent, provided you can afford the upfront total, the refund terms suit you, and you are prepared to review the renewal price before it applies. The lowest visible number is rarely the true cost; the total you pay across the term and the price after it are the figures that decide which plan is cheapest for you.
Prices above reflect the sources’ stated dates and markets. Check each provider’s current checkout before paying, since offers and renewal terms can change without notice.
