There is no single best cheap phone for every buyer in 2026. In the US, the Google Pixel 10a is a strong all-round Android choice below $500, while the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G is a lower-cost option with useful essentials. In the UK, the Samsung Galaxy A37 is a leading budget pick in a separate price range. The right choice depends on your country, current price, preferred operating system, and whether you value camera quality, battery life, screen size, or software support most.

Which cheap phone should you buy?
For most US Android buyers: Google Pixel 10a
Tom’s Guide includes the Pixel 10a in its tested phones under $500, TechRadar calls it the best cheap Android in its guide, and WIRED names it its overall cheap-phone pick at $499 in its 2026 roundup. Those rankings make it a strong starting point, not a universal winner. Tom’s Guide’s comparison says changes over the Pixel 9a are limited, so the 10a’s actual selling price matters: if the older model is meaningfully discounted, compare both before paying full price.
For battery context, Tom’s Guide recorded 15 hours 16 minutes for the Pixel 10a in continuous cellular web surfing at 150 nits. This is one outlet’s controlled test, not a prediction of how long your phone will last with your apps, signal, brightness, and settings. See Tom’s Guide’s tested under-$500 phone guide; WIRED’s 2026 cheap-phone picks also list the 10a.

For the lowest entry price in the US: Samsung Galaxy A17 5G
Engadget reported a $200 starting price for the Galaxy A17 5G in its February 2026 guide. Its cited configuration highlights a 6.7-inch OLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate, microSD storage expansion, and a 50MP main camera paired with a 5MP ultrawide. The important compromise is processing: Engadget’s reviewer found the Exynos 1330 can struggle with multitasking and demanding apps. It makes more sense for messaging, browsing, streaming, and basic photography than for heavy workloads or consistently demanding games. The $200 is a reported starting-price snapshot, not a guaranteed current offer. Read Engadget’s guide and assessment.
For a large screen and Samsung integration: Galaxy A57
Tom’s Guide highlights the Galaxy A57’s 6.7-inch AMOLED display, battery endurance, and fit with Samsung’s ecosystem. Its cautions—and TechRadar’s—include weaker raw processing and AI photography than some competitors, camera limitations, and value concerns tied in part to a price increase over its predecessor. Consider it if screen size and Samsung integration matter more to you than peak performance or camera results; compare its local price with the Pixel 10a before deciding. Tom’s Guide’s US guide and TechRadar’s guide discuss the tradeoffs.
For iOS: Apple iPhone 17e
TechRadar names the iPhone 17e its best cheap iPhone, and WIRED also lists it as its inexpensive iPhone choice. That makes it a candidate for someone who wants iOS, not necessarily the cheapest phone overall. Compare the exact local price with Android models and with any available iPhone alternatives; the review coverage characterizes it as not an unequivocal bargain. TechRadar’s guide explains its positioning.
For distinctive design: Nothing Phone (4a) Pro
TechRadar and WIRED include the Nothing Phone (4a) Pro among their 2026 cheap-phone options. It is worth considering if its design and presentation appeal to you, but the cited coverage does not establish it as a definitive head-to-head winner for all buyers. Check its exact price and configuration against the more clearly differentiated options above. WIRED’s roundup and TechRadar’s roundup include it.

For long battery-test results: Motorola Moto G (2026) or Moto G Power (2026)
In Tom’s Guide’s continuous cellular web-surfing test at 150 nits, the Moto G (2026) lasted 19 hours 10 minutes and the Moto G Power (2026) lasted 18 hours 22 minutes, compared with 15 hours 16 minutes for the Pixel 10a. The figures are useful for comparing those phones under that outlet’s protocol, but different screens, networks, apps, and settings change real-world battery life. They do not establish that either Moto will last a fixed number of hours for every owner. Tom’s Guide describes its battery testing and phone picks here.
For a UK all-round pick: Samsung Galaxy A37
The Guardian’s UK guide lists the Galaxy A37 from £349 and describes a 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED display, 5,000mAh battery, and IP68 rating. It reports six years of software and security updates from the April 2026 launch, through 2032. Its battery result was 16 hours 37 minutes in a PCMark test; that protocol is different from Tom’s Guide’s cellular web-surfing test, so the hours are not directly comparable. The Guardian also calls the A37 a minimal update over the A36 and reports a C repairability rating in the EU EPREL database. Check the UK listing and exact configuration, and do not treat an IP68 rating as making a phone indestructible. Read The Guardian’s UK budget-phone guide.

For UK battery capacity: Motorola Edge 70 Fusion
The Guardian lists the Edge 70 Fusion from £379 in the UK and identifies its larger-battery edition as a battery-life choice. That edition has a 7,000mAh battery, and the reviewer says it can potentially last up to two days in their use; this is review experience, not a standard guarantee. The large-battery version is offered in one color, a practical compromise to check against the exact UK listing. The Guardian’s guide covers the UK model.

For UK value, compare the Pixel 9a with the 10a
The Guardian reported that Google kept the Pixel 9a on sale at £349 after the Pixel 10a arrived, and argued that buyers may prefer the discounted previous generation because the newer phone changes little. That reported UK price and stock are not stable. Verify both models’ current listings and compare the actual difference rather than assuming the older phone is still available at that price. See The Guardian’s UK comparison.

How to choose a budget phone that fits your use
Set a maximum price in your own currency and market first. A US roundup under $500 and a UK guide up to £600 describe different shopping pools; their prices are not directly comparable because tax, availability, variants, and dates differ. Then compare the points that affect daily use:
- Total cost and compatibility: Check the exact storage capacity, unlocked or carrier-sold version, and whether it works with your carrier’s network. A headline starting price may refer to a particular configuration or offer.
- Display: Screen size and refresh rate affect comfort and smoothness, but panel type and brightness matter too. A large display can be useful for reading and video while making a phone less compact.
- Camera results: Do not choose by megapixel count alone. Consider consistency across everyday scenes and whether the reviewer identifies weaknesses, such as the A57’s camera limitations relative to some rivals.
- Performance: Match the processor to your workload. Basic communication and browsing are lighter tasks than intensive multitasking, demanding apps, or games; the A17 5G’s reported limits are relevant if you do more than essentials.
- Battery evidence: Compare test results only when you understand the protocol. Tom’s Guide used continuous cellular web surfing at 150 nits; The Guardian reports a PCMark result for the A37. Neither figure is a direct forecast of your daily runtime.
- Support and durability: Look for a stated software and security update period, its start date, and water/dust protection. The A37’s six years are counted from its April 2026 launch. An IP rating describes a protection classification, not immunity from damage.
- Storage and repair: If you keep lots of photos or downloads, check built-in storage and whether microSD expansion is available; Engadget reports microSD expansion for the A17 5G. Repairability may also matter: the Guardian cites the A37’s EU EPREL C rating.
- Operating system: If you specifically want iOS, the iPhone 17e is the relevant pick here. Otherwise compare Android candidates on price, performance, support, and the features you actually use.
Prices and review rankings change
All prices and rankings in this guide are attributed snapshots from review coverage published in 2026: TechRadar updated its US guide on September 18, Tom’s Guide its US under-$500 guide on August 7, WIRED’s roundup was updated in March, Engadget’s guide is dated February 16, and The Guardian’s UK guide is dated September 23. Discounts, inventory, and configurations can change quickly. Before purchase, verify the retailer’s current price, exact storage and color, and whether the listing is unlocked or tied to a carrier. Editorial picks reflect each publication’s assessment and test approach, not a single standardized ranking across every phone.
