No single catcher’s mitt is the best choice for every professional catcher. The right model depends on size, throwing hand, the pocket shape a catcher prefers, and whether the glove is used mainly for receiving pitches or for quick transfers. Published information on specific models comes from manufacturer and retailer listings, and no independent head-to-head comparison of these models is available. The practical approach is to narrow the field by fit, then try the mitt before committing.
What the available product information covers
Manufacturer pages give dimensions, leather and padding construction, and a description of how the pocket is designed to form. They do not establish which mitt performs best in games, and the descriptions are the brand’s own wording. Treat them as specifications to compare, not proof of performance.
Start with size and throwing hand
Two Rawlings Pro Preferred models illustrate how the basic specifications differ. Both are listed as adult-level gloves with the same premium construction, but their size and hand options are not identical.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CM33 | 33 inch | Right-hand throw | Kip leather shell, Pittards sheepskin lining | 100% wool-blend padding, one-piece solid web | Adult level; player break-in figure listed as 70 (the listing does not explain what this figure measures) |
| CM43 | 34 inch | Selectable throwing hand | Kip leather shell, Pittards sheepskin lining | 100% wool-blend padding, one-piece solid web | Adult level; Pro and College listed |
The CM33 is the more direct starting point if a catcher wants a right-hand model in a 33-inch size. The CM43 gives a 34-inch option and lets the buyer choose the throwing hand. Confirm the size and hand on the listing before ordering, because a mitt that fits the hand poorly will affect receiving more than any difference in pattern.

Pocket shape varies by pattern
Pocket depth and width are where patterns differ most. Rawlings describes the following patterns, each tied to a named catcher. These are manufacturer descriptions of how the pattern is designed, not measured comparisons.
| Pattern (Rawlings) | Associated catcher | Pocket as described by the manufacturer | Best suited to, per the description |
|---|---|---|---|
| AR35 | Adley Rutschman | Deeper and slightly narrower | Not stated |
| Pro Preferred pattern | J.T. Realmuto | Shallower | Quick transfers |
| CM41 | Jonah Heim | Wide and deep | Not stated |
A deeper, narrower pocket generally holds the ball more securely but can be slower to release it; a shallower pocket is typically chosen to speed up the throw. These trade-offs are general catching considerations rather than results from these specific gloves, so the catcher’s own receiving style should decide the choice. Size and hand for the AR35, CM41, and Pro Preferred pattern are not stated in the listings reviewed, so check them directly with the seller.

Other brands in the same category
A specialist baseball equipment retailer lists catcher’s mitts from several brands. These include the Rawlings Pro Preferred and Heart of the Hide, the Wilson A2K and A2000, the All-Star Pro Elite, and the Mizuno Pro. Appearing in a retailer’s category shows availability, not comparative quality, and it does not confirm current stock. No published, side-by-side performance data for these models was found, so compare them on the same fit criteria used above.
How to choose and test a mitt
- Confirm size and throwing hand. Match the listed size and hand to the catcher’s current glove, and note whether the model is sold in a hand option you need.
- Check the pocket description. Choose a deeper pocket for steady receiving and a shallower one if quick transfers are a priority.
- Compare construction. Kip leather, sheepskin lining, and wool-blend padding are listed on the Pro Preferred models; compare these details across brands that publish them.
- Try the mitt on. Check that the hand sits comfortably, the fingers reach the end of the glove, and the pocket closes around a ball when the glove is set for a catch.
- Plan the break-in. Leather gloves change shape with use. Ask whether the model needs a long break-in, and make sure the catcher has time to form the pocket before a season.
- Check the listing and seller. Confirm current stock, price, and return terms on the seller’s page before buying.
Price and availability
When the Rawlings CM33 listing was checked for this article, it displayed a price of $359.95 and was marked out of stock. Prices and inventory change, so confirm both on the seller’s page at the time of purchase.

What the manufacturer says about the line
Rawlings describes the Pro Preferred series in its CM33 listing this way: “Known for their clean, supple kip leather, Pro Preferred® series gloves break in to form the perfect pocket based on its owners’ specific playing preference.” This is manufacturer copy, not an independent finding, and it does not state how long a break-in takes.
For a practical buying route, search for an adult 33-inch or 34-inch baseball catcher’s mitt that matches the throwing hand, then compare the pocket description against the catcher’s style. Models from other brands can be assessed against the same checklist.
