If you want to play Castlevania before Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, choose a collection by the kind of game you want: Anniversary Collection for classic stage-based action, Advance Collection for the Game Boy Advance era, or Dominus Collection for the Nintendo DS trilogy and extra convenience features. Konami lists Belmont’s Curse for global release in 2026, but its cited official material gives no exact date.

Which Castlevania collection should you start with?

The collections cover distinct eras and play styles rather than offering three versions of the same experience. Use this comparison to narrow the choice:

Collection Best fit Games and features Platforms listed in official materials
Castlevania Anniversary Collection Classic, stage-based action across console and handheld eras. Eight games, including Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, Super Castlevania IV, and Bloodlines. Simon’s Quest is more exploration- and puzzle-focused than the first game. PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam/PC. Konami identifies it as digital-download-only.
Castlevania Advance Collection The Game Boy Advance-era entries. Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow, and Dracula X. Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Steam, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Nintendo labels its Switch bundle a download.
Castlevania Dominus Collection The Nintendo DS trilogy, with modern convenience options. Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia, Haunted Castle Revisited, and the original Haunted Castle. Features include rewind, quick saves, region switching, music playlists, and a compendium. Nintendo Switch, PS5, Steam, and Xbox Series X|S.

Platform lists can change, so confirm the current storefront listing for your system before buying. The cited official sources establish digital storefront availability, but do not establish physical availability for every collection.

Choose by the Castlevania experience you want

For short, stage-based action: Anniversary Collection

Start here if you want the series’ classic format: move through stages, learn enemy patterns, and take on demanding bosses. The collection spans multiple older systems, so its eight games are not all identical. In particular, Simon’s Quest leans further into exploration and puzzle solving than the original Castlevania. It is a better fit if you want variety than if you expect every entry to be a straightforward sequence of stages.

#1 Best Overall
Castlevania Anniversary Collection - Limited Run #405 - PlayStation 4
  • Classics that defined the Castlevania series.
  • Includes the "History of Castlevania - Book of the Crescent Moon" ebook.
  • This includes eight classic Castlevania games preserved on one disc with a full-color manual.
  • The Castlevania Anniversary Collection on physical disc for the PlayStation 4. Also works on PlayStation 5. Region-free.

For the GBA era: Advance Collection

Choose this collection to play the three GBA titles—Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, and Aria of Sorrow—alongside Dracula X. It is the most direct route to that handheld-era selection. Check the listing for your platform, since its supported systems differ from the other collections.

For the DS trilogy and assist options: Dominus Collection

Choose Dominus for Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia, plus two versions of Haunted Castle. Its documented options include rewind and quick saves, as well as region switching, playlists, and a compendium. Those features can make revisiting the games more convenient; they do not change which era or games the collection contains.

What is known about the next Castlevania release?

Konami’s investor presentation lists Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse as a global release for 2026 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. The presentation does not name a month or day, so a more precise release date is not established by that announcement. Konami also says the series’ 40th anniversary is in September 2026 and refers to anniversary merchandise and official soundtracks coming to streaming platforms; it does not identify specific merchandise products in the cited announcement.
