There is no single best car insurer for every teen or family. In its October 2026 comparison, CNBC Select highlights Travelers for affordability, Progressive for accident forgiveness, Auto-Owners for driver monitoring, State Farm for customer satisfaction, GEICO for multi-car households, and USAA for eligible military families. Treat these as starting points, not guarantees: your best option depends on your state, household, vehicle, coverage, and the insurer’s underwriting.

Teen coverage can cost substantially more than adult coverage. CNBC Select reports The Zebra averages of $5,040 a year for a teen driver and $2,324 a year nationally, both dated September 2026. These are comparison-site averages, not personalized quotes; they should not be used to predict what a particular family will pay.

Which insurers are worth comparing?

Household priority Insurer to consider What to verify
Affordability Travelers Get a quote for your exact drivers, cars, and coverage; rates and discounts vary by state. Travelers’ IntelliDrive program advertises savings of up to 30%, subject to eligibility, state availability, and program terms—not a typical or guaranteed discount.
Accident forgiveness Progressive Confirm eligibility and the applicable policy terms before relying on the feature.
Driver monitoring Auto-Owners Check local availability and consider whether the household is comfortable with how driving is monitored.
Customer satisfaction State Farm Use the category as a lead, then compare service and claims information relevant to your needs.
Multiple cars GEICO Compare the total household premium and coverage, not just the added cost associated with the teen.
Military families USAA Confirm that the driver or family meets USAA’s eligibility requirements.

CNBC Select also reports that Travelers offers more than a dozen discounts, including safe-driver, good-student, new-car, homeowner, and electric-vehicle-related discounts; some are state-specific. A long discount list does not establish which discounts you qualify for or which insurer will offer the lowest final price. See CNBC Select’s teen car insurance comparison.

What makes teen insurance expensive?

Insurers price policies using more than a driver’s age. The premium can change with location, driving experience and record, the car and its use, the coverage selected, deductibles, and how the household’s drivers and vehicles are arranged on policies. Washington’s insurance regulator notes that teens have elevated crash risk and limited driving experience; North Carolina’s regulator also identifies experience and driving record as factors affecting premiums.

For a local example—not a national price—North Carolina’s Department of Insurance gave an illustrative comparison on June 17, 2026: a six-month full-coverage policy for parents was $991, rising to $1,730 after adding a 16-year-old. It is a regulator example, not a quote or forecast for other households or states. Read the North Carolina DOI example.

How to compare quotes fairly

  1. Start before the teen drives. Contact your current insurer and several competitors. Washington’s insurance regulator recommends getting a quote before buying a car for the teen, so the cost can inform the vehicle decision.
  2. Keep the quote details consistent. Give each insurer the same drivers and cars, liability limits, collision and comprehensive selections, and deductibles. A minimum-liability quote is not directly comparable to a full-coverage quote.
  3. Ask how the teen should be listed. State Farm says a teen may be listed on a parent’s or spouse’s policy and that an individual policy will likely cost substantially more than adding the teen to a parent’s policy. That is general insurer guidance, not a guarantee of eligibility or savings for every family; ask insurers to price the arrangements available to you.
  4. Explain the household accurately. If parents live separately or the teen drives cars kept at both homes, tell each insurer. Requirements can differ when a teen uses vehicles at multiple households. Ask how both the driver and vehicles must be listed.
  5. Request an itemized discount check. Ask about good-student, driver-education, multi-car, bundling, student-away-at-school, and safe-driving discounts. Confirm each discount’s requirements and availability for the teen, policy, and state.
  6. Compare the complete household cost. Look at the total premium and the coverage each policy provides, rather than focusing only on the increase attributed to adding the teen.

Washington and Utah regulators both advise shopping around. Washington’s guidance also covers quotes before a teen’s car purchase; Utah’s consumer guidance discusses insurance decisions and deductibles for teen drivers. Should the teen be on a family policy or an individual policy?

Ask insurers to quote a family-policy option and an individual policy if both are available and appropriate. State Farm says a teen’s own policy will likely cost substantially more than being added to a parent’s policy, but insurers’ rules and the household’s circumstances matter. NerdWallet’s May 2026 analysis also examines hypothetical teen-insurance scenarios; its modeled comparisons are not a substitute for your own quotes.

Do not assume every carrier handles household drivers the same way. Describe who owns and regularly uses each vehicle, where the teen lives, and whether the teen drives cars at more than one parent’s home. Get the insurer’s instructions on how the policy should reflect those facts before driving begins.

Choose a car and coverage that fit the household

Check the car before buying

Ask for an insurance quote for the exact make, model, and year before purchase. Vehicle value, safety characteristics, and use can affect the decision, but an older or cheaper car is not automatically safer or cheaper to insure. Washington and Utah consumer guidance encourage families to consider vehicle and coverage details rather than relying on a broad rule of thumb.

Balance protection against premium

Common coverage choices include liability, collision, comprehensive, uninsured/underinsured motorist, medical-payments, and emergency-road-service coverage. What makes sense depends on state requirements, assets, the car’s value, and whether a lender or leasing company requires physical-damage coverage. Illinois’ insurance regulator warns that state-minimum coverage may not fully protect against lawsuits, so do not assume the legal minimum is adequate for your circumstances. Illinois DOI guidance for teen drivers.

Set deductibles with the out-of-pocket cost in mind

A higher collision or comprehensive deductible can lower the premium, but it also increases what you must pay for a covered claim. Before raising it—or dropping physical-damage coverage on an older vehicle—consider whether you could absorb the expense after a loss and check any lender requirements. Utah’s Insurance Department advises consumers to weigh the larger potential loss before increasing a deductible.

Can discounts and driving programs reduce the cost?

They may, if the teen and policy meet the insurer’s conditions. State Farm advertises an eligible good-student discount of up to 25%; the maximum is not a guaranteed saving, and qualifications and availability vary. State Farm also describes driver-training and safe-driving programs. Ask for the requirements and resulting price for the specific policy rather than assuming a discount applies automatically. State Farm’s guidance for teen and new-driver insurance.

Usage-based insurance may be worth comparing, but first review what driving data the program collects or measures, how the program works, its terms, and whether it is available in your state. A program’s advertised maximum savings does not tell you what an individual driver will save.

What to do before the teen gets behind the wheel

  • Get quotes from the current insurer and several competitors before buying or assigning a car.
  • Give each company the same household, vehicle, coverage, and deductible information.
  • Ask how the teen and every regularly used vehicle must be listed, including cars at another parent’s home.
  • Check discount eligibility and program terms directly with each insurer.
  • Choose limits and deductibles with state rules, financial exposure, vehicle value, and lender conditions in mind.
  • Confirm the policy is in force and the teen is properly covered before driving.
