The best camera for aquarium photography is the one that gives you the right control for your subject: a fast shutter and responsive autofocus for swimming fish, close-focus or macro capability for details near the glass, and steady, level framing for a whole planted tank. No current cross-brand test establishes one camera as the best. In practice, reflections, lens choice and exposure often matter more than moving up to a pricier camera body.
What makes a camera suitable for aquarium photos?
Look for a camera and lens combination that lets you manage shutter speed and ISO, focus at the distances you need, and frame the tank without introducing reflections or distortion. Choose based on what you want to photograph rather than on a single “best camera” label.
- Moving fish: The camera should let you use a shutter speed fast enough to reduce motion blur, with autofocus that can acquire a fish through the glass.
- Close-up fish details: Check the lens’s minimum focusing distance. A compatible macro lens can be more useful than a more expensive body when fish swim close to the pane.
- The entire aquarium: Consider a field of view that fits the tank, a level camera position and support for a tripod and release.
- Dim or tank-lit rooms: Manual shutter and ISO control help you balance motion, depth of field and image noise.
Also check lens-mount and sensor-format compatibility before choosing a lens. A wide field of view can help frame a tank, but a hood placed against the glass may appear at the edges of the image.

How to photograph swimming fish
Control reflections and angle
Reflected room light is a major obstacle. Nikon National Training Specialist Paul Van Allen calls it “the single biggest challenge to aquarium image creation.” Bring the lens close to the tank, or use a compatible soft rubber hood against the glass to block reflections without scratching the pane. Check the frame: a wide-angle lens may capture the hood around the edges.
Keep the camera square to the tank rather than shooting across the pane at an angle. Nikon notes that photographing through thick acrylic at an angle can create a colored fringe from refraction; Canon also recommends shooting at a right angle to reduce distortion.

Set exposure for movement
Nikon’s example starting point is Manual exposure with Auto ISO, a shutter speed of 1/125 second and an aperture of f/5.6. These are starting settings, not a guarantee: faster fish may need a faster shutter, while a different aperture may be needed for depth of field or available light. Check the exposure and bright highlights, then adjust.
When the image is too dark at the shutter speed you need, raising ISO can help preserve that speed, but higher ISO can make noise more visible. Canon’s guidance on this trade-off was published in 2014; the principle remains useful, but its camera and lens examples are historical. Image stabilization may reduce blur from your own hand movement, but it does not freeze a fish that is moving.

Focus close, and avoid flash by default
Fish can swim only inches from the tank face, so check that the lens can focus at that distance. Nikon’s older examples—a 40mm lens for DX and a 60mm lens for FX—illustrate the need for close focus; they are not universal prescriptions for current cameras or mounts.
Flash can reflect in aquarium glass, and reflections from fish scales can make the result look unnatural. Nikon and Aqua Design Amano both caution against it. Follow the venue’s photography rules, especially at public aquariums.

How to photograph a planted tank or the whole aquarium
A planted-tank composition is more static than a swimming-fish shot, so reflection control and a steady, carefully framed camera become especially important.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Clean the viewing surfaces. Wipe the inside and outside of the glass so marks do not distract from the composition.
- Reduce competing light. Turn off room lights, close curtains or shoot at night so reflections from the room are less prominent. Shade direct aquarium light that spills into the lens.
- Set the camera square and level. Face the pane directly to reduce distortion, and keep the camera level for a balanced tank composition.
- Stabilize the shot. Use a tripod and release for a stationary composition, which helps avoid camera shake during a longer exposure.
- Test exposure for your setup. Aqua Design Amano offers aperture priority, ISO 800–1600 and f/5.6–8 as an example, not a universal recipe. Make trial exposures and adapt to the tank lighting, camera and lens.
Should you buy a new camera or a lens?
Start with the limitation you are actually encountering. If the camera cannot maintain a useful shutter speed without unacceptable noise, a body with suitable exposure controls may help. If fish near the pane are beyond your lens’s focusing range, a compatible macro or close-focusing lens addresses the more relevant constraint. If the problem is a whole-tank shot, a tripod, release and better reflection control may be more useful than either upgrade.
Before buying, verify the lens mount and sensor-format compatibility, confirm that the lens focuses at your working distance, and check whether a rubber hood fits the lens without intruding into your intended framing. The Nikon examples in its aquarium guide use legacy camera bodies and F-mount lenses, so do not assume those specific products are current or compatible with another system.
