For strong camera quality in a compact drone, compare the DJI Mini 5 Pro and Mini 4 Pro—but note their different weight caveats. The Mini 5 Pro pairs a 1-inch sensor with a listed takeoff weight of 249.9 g, subject to an approximately ±4 g tolerance. The Mini 4 Pro’s standard configuration is listed below 249 g and uses a smaller 1/1.3-inch sensor. For a larger aircraft with more camera options, consider the dual-camera Air 3S or three-camera Mavic 4 Pro. None of their advertised distance figures is a promise of safe, lawful operating range.
Which camera drone best fits your needs?
The best choice depends on which trade-off matters most: carrying weight, camera flexibility, or endurance. DJI’s specifications provide a useful comparison, but maximum flight times and distances are manufacturer figures, not independent real-world test results.
| Model | Camera system | Listed takeoff weight | Maximum flight time | Distance figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DJI Mini 5 Pro | 1-inch CMOS, 50 MP effective pixels | 249.9 g, approximately ±4 g tolerance | 36 minutes with standard battery; 52 minutes with Plus battery | Up to 20 km transmission in FCC regions under unobstructed, interference-free conditions; maximum flight distance is listed separately |
| DJI Mini 4 Pro | 1/1.3-inch CMOS, 48 MP effective pixels | Standard configuration listed below 249 g; Plus battery takes it above 249 g | 34 minutes standard; 45 minutes Plus | Not stated in the cited specification details |
| DJI Air 3S | 1-inch 50 MP wide camera plus 1/1.3-inch 48 MP medium tele camera | 724 g | Up to 45 minutes | 32 km maximum flight distance in controlled, windless-equivalent testing |
| DJI Mavic 4 Pro | Three-camera system; 4/3-inch 100 MP main camera | Not stated in the cited comparison | Up to 51 minutes | 30 km O4+ transmission distance |
Figures are from current DJI specification and comparison pages checked on October 7, 2026; the pages do not show publication dates. Maximum flight-time and distance figures are manufacturer claims, not a like-for-like independent test. DJI Mini 5 Pro: prioritize the camera, but verify weight
The Mini 5 Pro is the camera-first compact option in this group. Its 1-inch CMOS sensor and 50 MP effective pixel count are the largest sensor and highest stated main-camera resolution among the two Mini models here. DJI lists 4K video at up to 120 fps, plus maximum flight times of 36 minutes with the standard battery and 52 minutes with the Plus battery. Its maximum flight distance is listed as 21 km on the standard battery and 32 km on the Plus battery in controlled, windless-equivalent testing.

Weight is the qualification: DJI lists 249.9 g with an approximately ±4 g tolerance. That means the listed figure alone does not establish that every unit is below 250 g. The Plus battery also changes the aircraft’s weight and regulatory implications. Check the actual configuration and applicable local rules rather than assuming the Mini 5 Pro is exempt from weight-based requirements. DJI Mini 5 Pro specifications.
DJI Mini 4 Pro: the clearer standard-battery sub-249 g choice
If staying below 249 g in the standard configuration is the priority, DJI lists the Mini 4 Pro there. It has a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor with 48 MP effective pixels, and DJI lists maximum flight times of 34 minutes with its standard battery or 45 minutes with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus. The Plus battery takes the aircraft above 249 g; DJI says that battery is not sold in Europe. DJI Mini 4 Pro specifications.

When a larger drone makes sense
DJI Air 3S: two focal lengths in one aircraft
The Air 3S weighs 724 g and combines a 1-inch 50 MP wide camera with a 1/1.3-inch 48 MP medium tele camera. The second camera gives you another framing option without requiring the aircraft to get as close to a subject. DJI lists up to 45 minutes of flight time and a 32 km maximum flight distance under controlled, windless-equivalent test conditions. Those figures do not change local flight rules or make a distant flight safe by themselves. DJI Air 3S specifications.
DJI Mavic 4 Pro: a three-camera system over minimum weight
For a flagship multi-camera system, DJIUSA’s comparison lists the Mavic 4 Pro with three cameras, a 4/3-inch 100 MP main camera, up to 51 minutes of flight time, and 30 km O4+ transmission distance. The cited comparison says FAA registration is required. Its camera options and transmission specification may appeal when carrying weight matters less than framing flexibility, but the comparison does not state a takeoff weight. What “long distance” means for a drone
Manufacturers publish several different distance measures. Treat each as a specification with a specific test context—not as a single usable range.
- Transmission distance describes the radio link under stated conditions and, in some cases, within a particular regulatory region. DJI lists up to 20 km for the Mini 5 Pro in FCC regions when unobstructed and interference-free, while its specifications also show shorter estimates for obstruction or interference scenarios. DJI Mini 5 Pro specifications.
- Maximum flight distance is a separate manufacturer test figure. DJI’s Mini 5 Pro specification lists 21 km on the standard battery and 32 km on the Plus battery under controlled, windless-equivalent testing. It is not the same as transmission distance, nor does it represent a recommended mission distance. DJI Mini 5 Pro specifications.
- Usable mission distance has to account for the return journey and battery reserve as well as wind, obstacles, interference, camera use, and other conditions. DJI warns that actual experience can vary. Plan around the flight and the conditions, not the largest number on a specification sheet.
- Legal operating distance depends on where and how you fly. In the United States, recreational flyers must keep the drone within visual line of sight; a long radio-link claim is not authorization to fly beyond it. FAA recreational-flyer guidance.
Weight and US recreational requirements
For US recreational flying, the FAA says drones weighing 250 g (0.55 lb) or more must be registered. Its exception covers aircraft weighing 0.55 pounds or less—less than 250 grams—when flown under the recreational exception. Registered drones must comply with Remote ID, and recreational flyers must take TRUST and fly within visual line of sight. These are US-specific rules; requirements elsewhere may differ. FAA recreational-flyer guidance.

This makes the two Mini models’ weight details consequential. The Mini 4 Pro’s standard configuration is listed below 249 g, but the Plus battery takes it above 249 g. The Mini 5 Pro’s listed 249.9 g weight and approximately ±4 g tolerance mean a specific unit may exceed the FAA’s 250 g threshold. Check the aircraft’s actual weight and configuration against the rules that apply to your flight. DJI Mini 5 Pro specifications, DJI Mini 4 Pro specifications, FAA recreational-flyer guidance.

How to choose
- Choose the Mini 5 Pro if a larger sensor and compact form matter most, and you are prepared to verify weight and battery configuration.
- Choose the Mini 4 Pro if you want DJI’s listed standard configuration below 249 g and can accept its smaller sensor.
- Choose the Air 3S if a wide and medium tele camera in one aircraft is more useful than minimum carry weight.
- Consider the Mavic 4 Pro if a three-camera system is the priority and the aircraft’s weight is less important to your decision.
