Fortnite is the best free online substitute for Call of Duty on Nintendo Switch 2. Choose DOOM for direct first-person shooting, Prodeus for fast retro-FPS action with extensive replay options, Borderlands Legendary Collection for co-op and loot progression, and Metro 2033 Redux for a darker, campaign-first experience. Nintendo’s catalogue also lists Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for Switch 2 with a 16 October 2026 date, but storefront availability and compatibility should be checked for your region before buying. Nintendo’s catalogue listed this information on 18 October 2026.
Quick answer: which Switch 2 game should you choose?
| What you want from Call of Duty | Best match | Why it fits | Important difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free online competition | Fortnite | Free-to-play battle royale, online multiplayer, cross-platform play, 60 fps listed for Switch 2, and optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls | It is a third-person battle royale rather than a traditional first-person military shooter |
| Immediate first-person gunplay | DOOM | Nintendo’s eShop identifies it as a first-person shooter and presents a focused, high-intensity shooting experience | Its tone and structure are built around brutal arcade action rather than military realism |
| Retro FPS campaign plus replayability | Prodeus | Hand-crafted campaign, co-op, competitive multiplayer, and a built-in community map browser | Its deliberately retro presentation and challenge are very different from a modern military campaign |
| Co-op shooting and loot progression | Borderlands Legendary Collection | Paid collection centered on cooperative play and gear-driven progression | Its role-playing and loot systems are more prominent than in a conventional COD match |
| Dark, story-led FPS | Metro 2033 Redux | First-person campaign with a darker survival-horror atmosphere | It is campaign-led rather than a direct replacement for competitive online COD |
There is no single “COD on Switch 2” substitute because Call of Duty combines several different activities: quick competitive matches, a first-person viewpoint, a cinematic campaign, cooperative play, progression systems, and a familiar military tone. The best choice depends on which of those elements you actually miss.
Fortnite: the best free online alternative
Fortnite is the clearest recommendation when your priority is playing online without buying a game. Nintendo’s current Switch 2 listing describes 60 frames per second, higher television and handheld resolutions than the original Switch version, online multiplayer, and cross-platform play. The listing also identifies optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, giving you a second aiming method beyond the standard sticks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy Fortnite replaces COD well
- No upfront game purchase: it uses a free-to-play model, so you can test the core loop before committing money.
- Online-first design: the appeal is competitive multiplayer rather than a single-player campaign.
- Cross-platform play: you can play with people on supported platforms instead of being limited to one console ecosystem.
- Switch 2 performance target: Nintendo lists 60 fps for the Switch 2 version. Treat that as the platform listing’s stated specification, not a guarantee that every mode or scene behaves identically.
- Flexible aiming: optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls may appeal if you prefer mouse-like pointing to traditional analog-stick aiming.
Where Fortnite differs
Fortnite is a third-person battle royale, so you see your character rather than looking through a weapon’s first-person view. Matches also follow a battle-royale structure instead of COD-style rounds built around compact maps and repeated respawns. That makes Fortnite the right answer for free competitive play, but not the closest match for someone specifically seeking a first-person campaign or military presentation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Who should pick it
Choose Fortnite if your priorities are online competition, playing with friends on other platforms, and avoiding an initial purchase. It is also the easiest option to recommend when you are unsure whether your main requirement is the shooting itself or simply a large, active multiplayer game on Switch 2.
DOOM: the closest direct first-person shooting replacement
DOOM is the cleanest first-person substitute among these choices. Nintendo’s eShop explicitly classifies it as a first-person shooter and describes it as “a brutally fun and challenging modern-day shooter experience,” identifying id Software as the developer. That wording matters: DOOM is built around aggressive, immediate combat rather than the slower positioning and military simulation some players associate with other shooters.
What carries over from COD
- First-person perspective: the viewpoint matches the basic visual language of COD.
- Constant shooting focus: combat is the central activity, with little need to learn a separate loot economy or battle-royale ruleset.
- Short-session suitability: a focused shooter is easy to pick up when you want action without learning a large progression system first.
What changes
DOOM does not attempt to reproduce COD’s military setting or multiplayer identity. Its tone is more extreme and its action is designed around speed, pressure, and a deliberately brutal style. If your favorite part of COD is a grounded campaign with squad dialogue, DOOM is a tonal departure. If your favorite part is moving, aiming, and firing in first person, it is the strongest fit in this list.

Best use case on Switch 2
Pick DOOM when “FPS” is the non-negotiable requirement. It is the safest recommendation for a player who asks for a Call of Duty alternative but really means “a straightforward first-person shooter.” Confirm the Nintendo listing for your region and the current Switch 2 compatibility status before purchase, particularly if you are choosing between digital and physical editions.

Prodeus: the most replayable retro-FPS option
Nintendo’s listing describes Prodeus as “a first-person shooter of old, re-imagined using modern rendering techniques and technology.” The same listing specifies a hand-crafted campaign, co-op and competitive multiplayer, and a built-in community map browser. That combination makes Prodeus the broadest retro-FPS package among these choices: it offers a campaign, ways to play with or against others, and additional community-made content.
Why it stands out
- Campaign: there is a designed single-player route rather than multiplayer-only play.
- Co-op: you can approach the game as a shared experience instead of playing alone.
- Competitive multiplayer: it provides a separate option when you want player-versus-player action.
- Community map browser: user-created maps extend the game beyond its hand-crafted campaign.
The retro trade-off
Prodeus intentionally evokes older FPS design. That means its presentation and challenge are part of the appeal, not an attempt to imitate a contemporary military blockbuster. Players who want a familiar COD-style interface, realistic weapons, or a cinematic campaign may find it too stylized. Players who value speed, compact levels, and replayable maps may prefer it to a more linear shooter.
When to choose Prodeus over DOOM
Choose Prodeus if you want more listed modes and long-term variety. DOOM is the cleaner first-person recommendation; Prodeus is the stronger choice when campaign, co-op, competitive play, and community content all matter. The built-in map browser also gives it a different replay model from a fixed campaign.
Borderlands Legendary Collection: best for co-op and loot progression
Borderlands Legendary Collection is the choice for players who remember COD primarily as a social shooting game and want a longer cooperative progression loop. Its defining combination is co-op action and loot-driven advancement. You are not simply replaying identical matches: equipment and progression are central reasons to continue.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Why it fits a COD player’s needs
- Cooperative focus: it gives you a reason to coordinate with friends rather than relying only on solo play.
- Shooting with progression: collecting and improving gear adds a persistent layer beyond individual encounters.
- Collection format: the Legendary Collection packages its Borderlands offering as a paid bundle rather than a free-to-play service.
How its structure differs
Borderlands is not a substitute for a quick competitive match. Loot, character development, and cooperative missions shape the experience, so sessions can be longer and more progression-oriented. Its tone is also distinct from a military shooter. If you want a campaign you can work through with friends and enjoy improving a character over time, that difference is an advantage. If you want tightly balanced player-versus-player rounds, Fortnite or Prodeus is a better direction.
Buying considerations
Exact regional pricing, physical-card stock, and edition details were not published in a universal listing. Check the Nintendo storefront for your country and confirm whether the listing is the collection and platform version you intend to buy. Compatibility and update status can vary by title, so do not assume that a listing seen in one region describes every release.
Metro 2033 Redux: best for a darker, story-led campaign
Metro 2033 Redux is the best match when the campaign matters more than online competition. It offers a first-person, story-led experience with a darker survival-horror atmosphere. That makes it suitable for players who want tension, exploration, and a serious mood rather than colorful competitive matches or arcade-style spectacle.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why campaign players should consider it
- First-person viewpoint: it preserves the perspective that many COD players find essential.
- Story-led structure: the campaign is the reason to play, rather than an optional mode attached to multiplayer.
- Darker atmosphere: its survival-horror tone provides a deliberate contrast to Fortnite’s colorful competition and DOOM’s aggressive arcade energy.
What you give up
Metro 2033 Redux is not the recommendation for free online multiplayer or a large competitive community. Its appeal is a focused campaign, so choose it when you want a contained narrative experience. Players expecting rapid respawns, cross-platform matches, or a broad competitive mode should select a different game from the list.

Match the game to the part of COD you miss
If you want free multiplayer
Start with Fortnite. It is the only free-to-play option identified here and the Nintendo listing confirms online multiplayer and cross-platform play. Its third-person battle-royale format is the compromise for avoiding an upfront purchase.
If you want first-person shooting above everything else
Choose DOOM for the most direct answer. Choose Prodeus instead if you also want co-op, competitive multiplayer, and a community map browser.
If you want a campaign with a strong mood
Pick Metro 2033 Redux for a darker, story-led campaign. Pick DOOM if you prefer relentless, stylized action over survival-horror atmosphere.

Prodeus is the only option in this set with a listed built-in community map browser. That feature makes it the logical choice when a fixed campaign is not enough.
Switch 2 compatibility, controls, and buying checks
Game availability on Switch 2 is not determined only by whether a title existed on the original Switch. A listing may depend on a platform update, a regional storefront, an edition, or a compatibility designation. Before purchasing any of these games, verify the current Nintendo listing for your country.
- Open the Nintendo eShop listing for your region. Confirm that the product is marked for Nintendo Switch 2 or is identified as compatible with it.
- Check the edition name. Collections and Redux editions can differ from similarly named individual releases.
- Read the current update and compatibility information. Legacy ports may receive platform-specific updates, and the status can change after a listing is published.
- Confirm multiplayer requirements. Fortnite’s listing includes online multiplayer and cross-platform play; the other games should be checked for the exact mode, account, and subscription requirements shown in your storefront.
- Choose your control method. Fortnite’s listing specifically identifies optional Joy-Con 2 mouse controls. Do not assume that the same feature is available in every other shooter.
- Check storage and delivery format. For a digital purchase, review the download size and required storage shown at checkout. For a physical purchase, verify the card, region, and included download requirements with the current retailer listing.
Price and availability expectations
Fortnite uses a free-to-play model. The other four recommendations are paid software, but exact prices were not verified for every region and should not be treated as universal. Store prices, taxes, discounts, physical stock, and edition availability can change independently by country.
For that reason, compare the current Nintendo eShop listing with the physical edition information available in your region rather than relying on a price quoted elsewhere. The same title can have different names, packaging, or update requirements across markets.
What about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2?
Nintendo’s upcoming-games catalogue lists Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for Nintendo Switch 2 with a 16 October 2026 date. Because this guide is dated 18 October 2026, that catalogue date has passed. The listing alone does not establish that the game is currently downloadable or available in every region, so check the live Nintendo catalogue and eShop before treating it as an immediate replacement.
The alternatives above remain useful for two reasons: they cover different needs while availability is confirmed, and they suit players who prefer another structure or tone. Fortnite, DOOM, Prodeus, Borderlands Legendary Collection, and Metro 2033 Redux are not interchangeable versions of COD; each replaces a specific part of the experience.
