For most people writing native C programs on Windows 11, Microsoft C++ Build Tools (MSVC) is the best default compiler. It integrates with the Windows SDK, produces Windows-native executables, supports C11 and C17 modes, and can be installed without the full Visual Studio IDE.

There are good alternatives. Choose Visual Studio Community if you want a free graphical IDE, MSYS2 with MinGW-w64 GCC if you specifically need GCC, or Visual Studio’s Clang/LLVM tools if you want Clang with Microsoft’s Windows libraries and linker.

Best C compilers for Windows 11

Compiler or setup Best for Main advantage Main drawback
MSVC Build Tools Native Windows development Windows SDK, linker, libraries, debugging and build integration Not a GCC environment; C99 support is incomplete
Visual Studio Community Beginners and IDE users Free editor, debugger, project management and MSVC in one application Larger installation than command-line Build Tools
MSYS2 with MinGW-w64 GCC GCC projects, Unix-like workflows and portable build scripts Pacman package management and familiar GCC tools Several environments must not be mixed
Clang-cl Clang diagnostics with Windows-compatible builds Clang front end with the MSVC linker, libraries and Windows SDK Requires Visual Studio components for the smoothest setup

1. Microsoft C++ Build Tools: the best default

Install Build Tools for Visual Studio when you want the compiler but do not need the Visual Studio editor. The package includes the MSVC compiler, linker, C runtime libraries, headers, Windows SDK integration and developer command prompts.

It is the most straightforward choice for Windows API programs, desktop applications, libraries intended for Windows, CMake projects using the Visual Studio generator, and software that must match Microsoft’s native toolchain.

Install MSVC Build Tools

  1. Download and start the Visual Studio Installer.
  2. Open the Workloads tab.
  3. Select Desktop development with C++.
  4. Leave the current MSVC toolset selected in the installation details.
  5. Click Install, or Modify if Visual Studio or Build Tools is already installed.

You can add a particular toolset later by opening Visual Studio Installer → installed product → Modify → Individual components, searching for MSVC, selecting the required component, and clicking Modify. For example, the installer may list MSVC Build Tools v14.50 for x64/x86. Toolsets that are out of support are marked in the installer.

Compile a C program with MSVC

Do not use an ordinary Command Prompt and expect cl to work. MSVC needs coordinated paths for its executable, headers, libraries and Windows SDK. Open Developer Command Prompt for VS 2026 from the Start menu, then create a file called hello.c:

#include <stdio.h>

int main(void)
{
    puts("Hello, Windows 11");
    return 0;
}

Compile it from the folder containing the file:

cl /std:c17 hello.c

This creates hello.exe and hello.obj. Run the program with:

hello.exe

Use /std:c11 instead if the project requires C11:

cl /std:c11 hello.c

MSVC recognizes a .c file as C source by default. The compiler supports C11 and C17 modes, but it does not provide a /std:c99 option and does not implement every C99 feature. Without a C-standard switch, its default C mode is older ANSI C89 with Microsoft extensions.

Select a target architecture

For a normal 64-bit Windows program, use the x64 developer prompt. You can also configure a prompt directly:

call "C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio18BuildToolsVCAuxiliaryBuildvcvars64.bat"

The path depends on the edition and installation location. Visual Studio 2026 commonly uses:

C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio18<edition>

where <edition> can be Community, Professional, Enterprise, Insiders or BuildTools.

For other targets, the supplied environment script supports commands such as:

call vcvarsall.bat x64
call vcvarsall.bat x64_x86
call vcvarsall.bat x64_arm64
call vcvarsall.bat x64 -vcvars_ver=14.51

The last example selects MSVC 14.51 when that toolset is installed. Beginning with Visual Studio 2026, MSVC toolset versions are decoupled from the Visual Studio product version and use a v##.## format. MSVC Build Tools 14.51 is the default compiler beginning with Visual Studio 2026 version 18.6.

2. Visual Studio Community: best free IDE

Visual Studio Community includes the MSVC compiler and adds a full editor, debugger, project system, code navigation, test integration and graphical build configuration. Select the same Desktop development with C++ workload during installation.

This is the easiest option for a learner who wants to press Build and Debug rather than manage compiler commands manually. It is also convenient for Windows desktop projects that use Visual Studio solutions or MSBuild.

Community is free for individual developers. Organizations can use it for classroom learning, academic research and open-source work without the normal five-user limit. Other non-enterprise organizations are limited to five users, and enterprise organizations cannot use it outside the permitted scenarios, so check Microsoft’s licensing terms before deploying it across a company.

To select an installed MSVC toolset in a project, open:

Project Properties
→ Configuration Properties
→ General
→ MSVC Build Tools Version

For a preview toolset, set Use MSVC Build Tools Preview to Yes.

3. MSYS2 and MinGW-w64 GCC: best GCC-based setup

Choose MSYS2 when your instructions, build system or existing code expects GCC, Bash, Make, Autotools or other Unix-style tools. MSYS2 is a rolling-release distribution, not just a single compiler download. It supplies multiple distinct environments, including MINGW64, UCRT64 and CLANG64.

The environment, compiler package and terminal shortcut must match. For a current Clang/MinGW-w64 setup, install MSYS2 and open MSYS2 CLANG64 from the Start menu. Then update the system before installing packages:

pacman -Suy

If the update asks you to close MSYS2 processes, confirm it, open a new MSYS2 terminal and run the same command again. MSYS2 supports full system upgrades; do not perform random partial upgrades.

Install the Clang package in the CLANG64 environment with:

pacman -S mingw-w64-clang-x86_64-clang

Verify the package and headers:

pacman -Qi mingw-w64-clang-x86_64-clang | grep Version
pacman -Qi mingw-w64-clang-x86_64-headers | grep Version

For a GCC-based environment, use the matching MSYS2 MinGW terminal and package family rather than copying a compiler from another environment. After installation, GCC syntax looks like this:

gcc hello.c -o hello.exe
gcc -std=c17 hello.c -o hello.exe
gcc -std=gnu17 hello.c -o hello.exe

-std=c17 requests ISO C17. -std=gnu17 enables GCC extensions as well. Current GCC documentation uses gnu23 for GNU C23; the older gnu2x spelling is deprecated.

MSYS2 is powerful, but it has more moving parts than MSVC. Mixing paths or packages from MSYS, MINGW64, UCRT64 and CLANG64 is a common cause of confusing link and runtime errors.

4. Clang-cl: best Clang choice for Windows-native builds

Visual Studio’s bundled LLVM tools provide Clang with an MSVC-compatible driver called clang-cl. Unlike a standalone MinGW-style Clang installation, it normally uses Microsoft’s standard library, linker and Windows SDK when launched from a Visual Studio developer environment.

Install it through:

  1. Open Visual Studio Installer.
  2. Select Modify for the installed product.
  3. Open Individual components.
  4. Under the C++ components, select C++ Clang tools for Windows.
  5. Select MSBuild support for LLVM (clang-cl) toolset if you want MSBuild integration.

From a configured developer command prompt, compile with:

clang-cl hello.c

The executable is normally produced in the current directory. The bundled executable is under one of these locations relative to the Visual Studio installation:

Which compiler should you install?

Your situation Recommended choice
You want to build ordinary Windows C programs MSVC Build Tools
You are learning C and want an editor and debugger Visual Studio Community
A course, project or library specifically requires GCC MSYS2 with the matching MinGW-w64 environment
You want Clang warnings but MSVC-compatible Windows linking Visual Studio Clang-cl
You need strict C99 compatibility GCC or Clang; MSVC has no C99 mode and incomplete C99 coverage

Fixing common installation failures

  • 'cl' is not recognized: use a Developer Command Prompt, or run the correct vcvars64.bat. A normal Windows Command Prompt does not configure MSVC.
  • Error C1034: compiler include paths are missing. Start a fresh developer prompt rather than adding only the compiler’s bin folder to PATH.
  • Error LNK1104: the linker cannot find a library or required file. Check that the Windows SDK and MSVC workload are installed and that the prompt belongs to the same Visual Studio installation.
  • Broken vcvarsall.bat: rerun Visual Studio Installer and repair or modify the installation. Do not replace the file with a copy from another computer.
  • MSYS2 signature or key errors: after a long gap between updates, try pacman-key --refresh-keys. If necessary, run pacman -Sy msys2-keyring, followed by pacman -Suy.
  • Conflicting MSVC environments: do not run command files from different Visual Studio versions in the same terminal. Open a new prompt for each toolchain.

MSVC toolsets are installed beneath VCToolsMSVC<version>. The default toolset folder is recorded in VCAuxiliaryBuildMicrosoft.VCToolsVersion.default.txt, which can help identify which version an installation is selecting.

FAQ

Is MSVC free on Windows 11?

The standalone Build Tools package is available without buying the Visual Studio IDE. Visual Studio Community is free for individual developers, subject to Microsoft’s organization-use restrictions.

Can MSVC compile C11 and C17?

Yes. Current MSVC supports /std:c11 and /std:c17. It does not offer /std:c99 and does not implement every C99 feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need the full Visual Studio IDE to use MSVC?

No. Install Build Tools for Visual Studio and select the Desktop development with C++ workload. Use the supplied Developer Command Prompt to run cl.

Should I use MinGW or MSVC for Windows programs?

Use MSVC for the simplest Windows-native setup and Microsoft tooling. Use MinGW-w64 through MSYS2 when GCC compatibility, Unix-style tools or an existing GCC build system is more important.

Can I add the MSVC compiler folder permanently to PATH?

It is better not to. MSVC also needs coordinated include, library and Windows SDK variables. Use a Developer Command Prompt or the supplied environment scripts.

The Bottom Line

Install Microsoft C++ Build Tools and select Desktop development with C++ unless your project specifically requires GCC or Clang. It is the least troublesome Windows 11 C toolchain and does not require the full Visual Studio IDE. Pick Visual Studio Community for a graphical workflow, MSYS2 for GCC and Unix-like tooling, or Clang-cl for Clang diagnostics with Microsoft-compatible Windows builds.
