Yes—sole proprietors can often apply for a business credit card without forming an LLC or getting an EIN. The best choice depends on where you spend, whether you can pay the balance in full, and whether you will use the card’s rewards. For a business credit card for a sole proprietor, compare the current terms and apply with accurate business and income details; approval is never guaranteed.

Can a sole proprietor get a business credit card without an LLC or EIN?

Often, yes. Capital One’s September 1, 2026 guide says sole proprietors can typically apply without a formal business entity or an employer identification number (EIN); many issuers accept a Social Security number (SSN) instead. Chase also notes that many cards accept an SSN, while warning that issuers may set minimum revenue or time-in-business requirements. These are general eligibility statements, not guarantees that a particular issuer will approve an application.

Chase defines a sole proprietorship as an unincorporated business run by one person, with no legal distinction between the owner and the business. The owner remains responsible for business debts, taxes, and liabilities. A separate business card can make it easier to identify business transactions on statements and organize bookkeeping, but it does not create legal separation or liability protection. A personal card may also be used for business charges, subject to its terms; a business card is a tracking convenience, not tax advice.

How to choose a business credit card for a sole proprietor

Start with your ordinary, planned business expenses and how you pay your bills. A high reward rate is not necessarily valuable if it applies to categories you rarely use, is limited by a cap, or requires you to carry a costly balance.

  • Match rewards to spending: Compare a flat rate on all purchases with higher rates in categories where you actually spend. Check the eligible categories, combined caps, exclusions, and what rate applies after a cap.
  • Compare total cost: Weigh any annual fee against rewards and benefits you expect to use. If you might carry a balance, compare the introductory APR, how long it lasts, and the variable APR afterward. Rewards do not make high-interest debt a sound financing strategy.
  • Be realistic about the welcome offer: Check the required spend and deadline. Count only purchases you would make anyway; do not overspend to earn a bonus.
  • Choose rewards you can use: Cash back is straightforward. Points or travel benefits may suit someone who will redeem them, but their practical value depends on redemption options and the card’s terms.
  • Check cash-flow and eligibility fit: Consider issuer requirements, your credit profile, the time you have to repay purchases, and whether you can reliably pay at least the amount due.

Business credit card examples and current terms

The following offers illustrate different spending and repayment needs; they are not universal recommendations. NerdWallet’s 2026 roundup assigns “best for” labels to several cards, but those are its editorial positioning, not a guarantee of fit or approval. Issuer offers and terms can change, so verify the application page and pricing terms before applying.

Can you apply with no business income?

Possibly, but there is no blanket rule in the cited issuer guidance that makes every applicant with no business income eligible. Chase says applicants who earn profit from goods or services may be eligible, including freelancers and gig workers; eligibility does not mean approval. Issuers may ask about annual revenue or time in business, and some may impose minimums. Answer each question accurately rather than estimating upward or reporting revenue the business has not earned.

Read the application wording carefully: the requested figure and period can vary. TD, for example, says applicants for its Business Solutions card should report prior-year annual revenue before taxes and expenses. That instruction is specific to that TD product, not a universal rule for every issuer.

What information may the application ask for?

Requirements vary by issuer and card. Be prepared to provide personal identifying information and details about the business. Depending on the application, that can include:

  • SSN or EIN, and the owner’s legal name.
  • Business name, address, contact details, and industry. If you have not registered a separate business name, the issuer may ask for your legal name.
  • Annual revenue and time in business, entered using the definitions and period requested.
  • In some cases, financial statements, proof of income, or evidence of business ownership.

For an unregistered sole proprietor applying for TD’s Business Solutions card, TD specifically says to use the business owner’s legal name and SSN. It also says that card is for commercial or business purposes, not personal or household expenses. Check the agreement for the particular card you plan to use rather than assuming another issuer has identical rules. TD Business Credit Cards.

How to apply accurately

  1. Choose the card based on actual spending and repayment. Compare categories, caps, fees, welcome-offer requirements, and both introductory and ongoing APRs.
  2. Use your real business status. Apply as a sole proprietor if that is your structure; do not claim an LLC, corporation, or EIN you do not have.
  3. Enter requested figures as defined. Report actual revenue for the period the issuer asks about. Do not inflate revenue or confuse revenue with profit.
  4. Review the issuer’s terms before submitting. Confirm the offer, eligibility rules, APR, fees, reward conditions, and any restrictions on card use.
  5. Plan for repayment. If you use an introductory APR, note when it ends and what APR applies afterward; do not rely on rewards to offset interest.

Capital One says a personal guarantee may be required when a business has not established its own credit, which can leave the owner personally responsible for repayment if the business cannot pay.
