For a small home or apartment without known dead zones, start with one dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router rather than paying for mesh by default. The TP-Link Archer AX55 is a strong budget shortlist pick: RTINGS names it its best budget router in its 2026 guide, and TP-Link lists a practical set of ports and Wi-Fi 6 features. It will not be the right choice for every internet plan, layout, region, or mix of devices.

Best budget Wi-Fi router for an apartment: TP-Link Archer AX55

The TP-Link Archer AX55 is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router in the AX3000 class. RTINGS selects it as its best budget router in its 2026 guide, while Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 roundup names it its best budget Wi-Fi 6 router. These are editorial recommendations, not proof that it is universally best or currently the least expensive option in every market. RTINGS’ 2026 budget guide and Tom’s Guide’s Wi-Fi 6 guide explain their respective assessments.

What the AX55 offers

TP-Link Canada lists a maximum wireless signal rate of 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, four gigabit LAN ports, one gigabit WAN port, USB 3.0, four external antennas, and EasyMesh compatibility. It also lists 160 MHz (HE160) support, which requires compatible client devices; regulatory availability should not be assumed in every region. See TP-Link’s AX55 specifications for the regional product details.

Those wireless rates are specification figures, not the internet speed a household should expect. TP-Link says its maximum wireless signal rates are derived from IEEE specifications. Actual results depend on the internet plan, client device, distance, obstacles, interference, and network conditions.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

What independent tests can—and cannot—tell you

Tom’s Guide reports 823.7 Mbps at 15 feet for the AX55 in its test. That is a result under Tom’s Guide’s test conditions, not a promise for an apartment or a direct prediction of internet throughput. Use test results to compare routers only when the test setup and conditions are comparable.

Will one router cover a small home, or do you need mesh?

A single traditional router is a reasonable first choice for a compact home without known coverage problems. Tom’s Guide says a traditional router should be able to cover a small home or apartment, but that is not a guarantee for every floor plan or building. Thick walls, multiple floors, awkward router placement, and distance can all make coverage harder. Tom’s Guide’s router guide discusses the distinction between traditional routers and mesh systems.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

Choose one router when

  • Your home is compact and you have no recurring dead zones.
  • You can place the router in a reasonably central, open location.
  • Your wired-device needs fit the router’s available ports and speeds.

Compare mesh when

  • A single router leaves rooms or floors without reliable coverage.
  • The layout makes it difficult to place one router where it can reach the whole home.
  • You are willing to pay for additional nodes to address those coverage gaps.

Mesh is a conditional alternative, not a default requirement for apartments. RTINGS discusses adding mesh units as needed, while Tom’s Guide positions mesh for larger or more difficult coverage situations. Neither point means every small home benefits from a kit. RTINGS’ budget guide covers its mesh discussion.

What to check before buying a budget router

Compare the full fit for your home rather than choosing by a headline speed class. The AX55’s AX3000 label and maximum wireless signal rates describe product specifications, not a household speed tier.

NETGEAR Nighthawk WiFi 6 Router R6700AX, Up to 1,500 sq ft, 1.8 Gbps
  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
  • Price and availability: Compare the current total price in your region, including any required accessories or extra mesh nodes. Prices, stock, and regional product variants change.
  • Wi-Fi generation and bands: Wi-Fi 6 may be enough for many homes. If your devices or plans make 6 GHz access or Wi-Fi 7 important, compare routers that provide those capabilities instead.
  • Ethernet: Count the wired devices you need to connect, and check both port quantity and speed against your ISP equipment and local network needs.
  • Coverage: Match a single router or mesh setup to the actual size, walls, floors, and layout of your home; a product rating cannot guarantee coverage in a particular building.
  • Firmware and support: Check the support status for the exact model and hardware revision. Tom’s Guide warns that unsupported routers may miss critical security updates. No specific Archer AX55 end-of-support date is established here, so do not assume a particular update duration.
  • Comparable testing: Treat published performance results as evidence from the named reviewer’s test conditions, not as a speed guarantee for your own connection.

When the Archer AX55 may not be the best fit

The AX55 does not provide 6 GHz access for Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 clients. RTINGS also identifies its lack of DFS-only channel support as a drawback; DFS channels can help in congested wireless environments. In a dense apartment building, those limitations are worth weighing against the router’s budget positioning rather than assuming any dual-band model will avoid interference. RTINGS’ budget guide identifies these tradeoffs.

Also check whether its single gigabit WAN port and four gigabit LAN ports match your equipment and wired-device requirements. If you need newer wireless capabilities, different port options, or coverage beyond what one router can provide, compare alternatives on those specific needs instead of relying on the AX3000 label.
