For U.S. shoppers, the strongest budget-phone choices depend on whether your ceiling is about $200, $300, or $400—and whether you are willing to buy used. New options include the $199.99 Galaxy A16 5G, the $279 CMF Phone 2 Pro, and the $299.99 Galaxy A26 5G; used-market snapshots put a 128GB Pixel 8a and iPhone 13 below $250 on average. These prices come from dated source listings, not guaranteed live offers, so verify the exact model, carrier compatibility, condition, and current price before buying.

The figures above are not directly equivalent: Samsung’s figures are announced starting prices, Android Authority lists MSRP, and Swappa reports used-market averages. Samsung’s U.S. newsroom also lists the Galaxy A56 5G at a $499.99 starting price, which places it outside a strict $400 budget. Samsung Newsroom and Android Authority provide the new-phone price and feature details; Swappa provides the used-market snapshots.

Best new phones around $200 to $300

Choose the Galaxy A16 5G for the lower listed MSRP

Android Authority lists the Galaxy A16 5G at $199.99 MSRP and describes support for up to six years of updates. That makes it worth comparing if keeping the upfront cost low matters more than stretching toward a higher-priced model. The guide’s price is not a guarantee of current retail availability, so check the price and exact variant before purchase.

Consider the CMF Phone 2 Pro only after checking your carrier

At a listed $279 MSRP, Android Authority points to the CMF Phone 2 Pro’s screen, modular features, and multiple cameras. Its U.S. network caveat is decisive: the guide says coverage is best through T-Mobile and worst through Verizon. Before buying, verify that the exact device variant supports your carrier’s current network and that the carrier will activate it. A low price is no bargain if the phone cannot reliably connect where you use it.

Pick the Galaxy A26 5G for Samsung’s stated display and battery specifications

Samsung’s 2025 U.S. announcement gives the Galaxy A26 5G a $299.99 starting price and specifies a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 50MP main camera, and a 5,000mAh typical-capacity battery. These are official announced specifications, not independent test results. Samsung notes that storage and availability may vary by carrier or market, so confirm the seller’s specific configuration.

When spending closer to $400 makes sense

The Galaxy A36 5G has a $399.99 announced U.S. starting price from Samsung, while Android Authority lists the Moto G Stylus (2025) at $399.99. The Moto’s built-in stylus gives it a specific advantage if you regularly take handwritten notes or annotate documents; its display, charging, and update commitments should also be weighed against that use. The evidence here does not establish a head-to-head winner between these models, and both prices may differ from current offers.

Samsung’s announced $499.99 starting price for the Galaxy A56 5G exceeds a $400 ceiling. Consider it only if your budget is flexible and a live offer makes the actual cost acceptable; do not treat the announced starting price as proof of a current discount.

For software longevity, Swappa says the Pixel 8a is supported through May 2031 and describes the Galaxy S24 FE as supported to about 2031. Check the stated update policy for the exact model you are considering, particularly for used devices: the remaining support period matters more than the model’s original launch promise.

Inspect the listing before paying

  • Confirm the storage capacity, exact model and regional variant, and whether it is locked to a carrier.
  • Read the seller’s description and examine photos for screen damage, worn ports, camera defects, and other physical problems.
  • Ask for battery-health information where the device provides it, especially for an older phone such as the iPhone 13.
  • Review the marketplace or seller’s return terms. Swappa says its listings are reviewed for clean device identifiers and activation readiness, but that marketplace statement does not replace checking the individual listing.

How to choose the right phone for your budget

  1. Set a firm ceiling. Decide whether your limit is around $200, $300, or $400, and account for any costs that affect the total you will pay.
  2. Choose new or used. New phones avoid the previous owner’s wear; used models may offer a higher-tier device for less, but require closer checks of battery health, condition, and return terms.
  3. Verify network compatibility. Match the phone’s exact variant against your carrier’s compatibility information before buying, particularly for the CMF Phone 2 Pro in the U.S.
  4. Compare remaining updates, not just launch promises. For used phones, establish how long the specific model is expected to receive software and security support.
  5. Prioritize the features you will use. A larger high-refresh-rate display, camera flexibility, built-in stylus, or battery capacity may matter differently depending on your needs; published specifications do not by themselves prove real-world performance.
  6. Recheck the live offer. Prices in this guide are dated source figures, not guarantees. Verify seller, storage, carrier status, return policy, and current price on the day you buy.

Battery claims need a test context

Tom’s Guide reports a 19-hour-and-10-minute battery result for the Moto G (2026) in its own battery test. That figure belongs to Tom’s Guide’s test conditions; it is not a promise of the same runtime for every owner or usage pattern. The available evidence does not establish a direct battery-test comparison among the other phones listed here. Tom’s Guide’s Moto G (2026) review is the source for that test result.
