The Canon EOS R50 kit is the strongest cited budget mirrorless starting point for parents who want room to grow; the Canon PowerShot SX740 is a better fit when easy carry and long zoom matter more than a major image-quality upgrade over a phone. If keeping the initial cost as low as possible is the priority, consider the EOS R100, while accounting for its screen and video trade-offs.
Which kind of camera suits your family?
There is no single best camera type for every household. A mirrorless camera with an interchangeable lens is the more flexible choice for larger-sensor image quality, autofocus and future lens options. A compact superzoom is simpler to carry and offers substantial reach without swapping lenses. The trade-off is that its smaller sensor may not outperform a modern phone in image quality, particularly indoors.
- Choose mirrorless if you want stronger image-quality potential, are willing to carry a camera and lens, and may want different lenses later.
- Choose a compact superzoom if convenience and photographing distant subjects are the main reasons to bring a separate camera.
Best budget mirrorless starter: Canon EOS R50
RTINGS names the Canon EOS R50 its best overall budget camera in its 2026 budget-camera guide. It has an APS-C sensor, interchangeable lenses, an articulated screen and an auto mode intended to make getting started less daunting. Parents can begin with a kit lens and consider other lenses later.

Lowest-cost mirrorless alternative: Canon EOS R100
The EOS R100 is an entry point for buyers who want a new mirrorless camera and an interchangeable-lens system at a lower initial cost. Its RF mount leaves open the possibility of a future body upgrade, although the current RF lens selection is smaller than that of more established systems.
Its fixed, non-touch screen is less flexible for framing than the R50’s articulated screen, and its 4K video is limited. RTINGS’ comparison of the R100 and R50 describes the latter as a meaningful step up in autofocus and video, so choose the R100 for its lower entry cost rather than assuming the two are equivalent.

Best for zoom and convenience: Canon PowerShot SX740
The PowerShot SX740 is a pocketable fixed-lens compact with extensive zoom and a tilt-up screen. It can bring distant subjects closer without carrying or changing lenses, which can be useful at family outings. Its main advantage is reach and convenience, not a guaranteed image-quality improvement over a current phone. The small sensor limits its low-light and image-quality advantage, so it is not the best match if your primary goal is cleaner indoor photos.

Other budget routes to consider
Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV
This compact Micro Four Thirds system includes in-body image stabilization, which helps reduce blur from camera shake when you are holding the camera still. RTINGS cautions that its tracking autofocus is less reliable for moving subjects. Stabilization is not a substitute for autofocus that follows a child or a fast enough shutter speed to freeze motion.
Used Canon Rebel T7
An older DSLR such as the Canon Rebel T7 may make sense when the lowest purchase price and access to a mature used lens ecosystem matter more than modern autofocus and video features. RTINGS notes that it lacks a tilting screen and 4K recording. Compare the condition and total cost of the body and lens with a complete newer kit rather than comparing body prices alone.

Think about movement, not just stabilization
Image stabilization reduces blur caused by camera movement. It does not freeze a child running or playing. For moving subjects, tracking autofocus and an appropriate shutter speed matter; a camera with stabilization can still produce a blurred child if the subject moves during the exposure.

Balance carry size against flexibility
A compact superzoom keeps the lens attached and makes distant subjects easier to frame. A mirrorless kit is bulkier, but lets you choose lenses and offers a larger sensor. Consider how much camera and lens weight you will actually bring on an ordinary day out.
Check the screen, controls and video you will use
An articulated or tilt-up screen can help when framing from high or low angles. Auto modes can reduce the learning curve, while video needs may make the R50’s advantages over the R100 relevant. Decide which features matter for your family before paying for flexibility you will not use.
Look beyond the first lens
A camera system’s future value depends partly on the lenses available for it and their cost. The EOS R100’s RF mount provides an upgrade path, but its current lens selection is smaller than that of more established systems. For any interchangeable-lens option, weigh future lens choices against the cost and size of the initial kit.
