The TCL QM6K is the strongest budget-oriented 85-inch pick for most US buyers, combining local dimming, 144Hz gaming support and Google TV. If keeping the price as low as possible matters more, the Hisense QD6QF is the cheaper route: RTINGS reports that its 85-inch model regularly sells for just under $1,000, but it gives up local dimming and is limited to 4K at 60Hz for gaming. Prices, stock and terms change, so confirm the exact 85-inch listing before you buy.
Best budget 85-inch TVs at a glance
| TV | Best for | What stands out | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| TCL QM6K | Best balance for most buyers | Local dimming, Dolby Vision, Google TV, 144Hz and two HDMI 2.1 ports | Reflections can be distracting in bright rooms, and bright objects may glow against dark scenes |
| Hisense QD6QF | Lowest-cost 85-inch option | RTINGS reports the 85-inch model regularly sells just under $1,000; Dolby Vision and VRR | No local dimming, dimmer HDR than the QM6K, and 4K gaming tops out at 60Hz |
| TCL QM7K | Step-up option under $1,500 | 4K, 144Hz, Google TV, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and two HDMI 2.1 ports | Off-angle and bright-room viewing limitations, only two HDMI 2.1 ports, and weak built-in audio |
The QM6K is the clearest all-around recommendation: RTINGS names it its best budget TV and lists an 85-inch size, while TechRadar identifies it as its US budget pick in its 85-inch guide. Neither source establishes a verified live price for the 85-inch QM6K, so do not assume that a price advertised for a smaller size applies to this model.
Why the TCL QM6K is the best overall budget pick
The QM6K offers the strongest combination of features in this group for viewers who want both a large screen and useful gaming options. RTINGS lists local dimming, Dolby Vision, Google TV, two HDMI 2.1 ports, 4K at 144Hz, 1080p at 288Hz and variable refresh rate (VRR). Those specifications make it the more versatile choice for a mix of streaming, movies and current gaming hardware.
Local dimming can improve dark-scene contrast by controlling areas of the backlight, but it is not a guarantee of perfectly clean blacks: RTINGS reports visible glow around bright lights and subtitles. The TV can handle some glare, but its reflection handling is poor in bright spaces. If the screen will face strong windows or lights, consider the room before prioritizing features on paper. RTINGS’ TCL QM6K review details these strengths and limitations.

Choose the Hisense QD6QF to spend less
RTINGS reports that the 85-inch QD6QF can regularly be purchased for just under $1,000. That is a recurring price observation from its 2026 guide, not a guaranteed current offer; the actual price, seller, stock and delivery terms depend on the listing. Check that the product page explicitly identifies the 85-inch version. RTINGS’ 80–85-inch TV guide provides the model and pricing context.
The savings come with noticeable compromises. The QD6QF has no local dimming, so blacks can appear gray, and RTINGS describes its HDR brightness as lower than the QM6K’s. It supports Dolby Vision and VRR, and runs Fire TV, but HDMI 2.0 bandwidth limits 4K gaming to 60Hz. RTINGS describes it as just bright enough for moderate lighting, so it is a less convincing fit for a sunlit room.
Consider the TCL QM7K if your budget can stretch
Tom’s Guide places the QM7K in an under-$1,500 category, making it a step-up comparison rather than the strictest low-budget choice. Its listed features include 4K resolution, 144Hz, Google TV, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and two HDMI 2.1 ports. Tom’s Guide’s TCL QM7K review also flags off-angle viewing, performance in bright rooms and poor built-in audio as drawbacks. If you are considering it, include audio needs in the total budget and check whether two HDMI 2.1 connections are enough for your devices.

How to decide which 85-inch TV fits your room and devices
Check the exact price and size
Compare listings for the 85-inch model itself. A retailer may show a tempting price for a smaller screen from the same series; that does not establish the price of the 85-inch set. Also verify seller, inventory, delivery and return terms before checkout. The only concrete recurring price observation in these comparisons is RTINGS’ report of the 85-inch QD6QF regularly selling just under $1,000.
Match picture performance to the room
For darker viewing, the QM6K’s local dimming is an advantage over the QD6QF, though bright details can produce glow. For a bright room, weigh reflections and screen brightness carefully: RTINGS notes poor reflection handling on the QM6K and says the QD6QF is suited to moderate, rather than especially bright, lighting.
Count ports and compare gaming needs
Make a list of devices that need the fastest connection—such as a console and gaming PC—and compare it with each TV’s ports and refresh-rate support. The QM6K offers two HDMI 2.1 ports and 4K at 144Hz; the QD6QF’s HDMI 2.0 bandwidth limits 4K to 60Hz, although VRR is supported. The QM7K also lists two HDMI 2.1 ports, so account for any other connected devices.

Choose the smart platform and HDR support you will use
The QM6K and QM7K use Google TV, while the QD6QF uses Fire TV. The QM6K and QD6QF list Dolby Vision; the QM7K lists Dolby Vision and HDR10+. Consider the streaming apps and formats you actually use rather than treating a longer feature list as a guarantee of better picture quality.

Plan for sound separately
A large screen does not ensure strong built-in audio. Tom’s Guide specifically identifies poor audio as a QM7K drawback. If sound quality matters, compare audio separately and account for a soundbar only if it still fits your overall budget.
