For Primeknit, mesh, and other delicate shoe uppers, choose a soft-bristle brush and clean with light pressure. A soft toothbrush works for surface dust and small areas. Keep a firmer brush for the rubber outsole, where it can reach tread grooves; do not use it on the knit or mesh.
Which brush should you use on a knit shoe upper?
Use a soft-bristle shoe brush on knit, woven, or mesh uppers. A soft, clean toothbrush is a practical alternative for dust or a small stained area. adidas advises gentle brushing to avoid wearing away the upper material, and its running-shoe guidance warns that hard bristles and harsh scrubbing can damage weave or mesh.
There is no comparative testing here to establish one brand or model as the best. The useful recommendation is the brush type: soft bristles for the delicate upper.

Reserve a harder brush for the rubber outsole, not the upper. Its firmer bristles can help work dirt out of outsole grooves, while the knit or mesh needs a gentler touch. adidas’s cleaning guide distinguishes a soft brush for the upper from a hard brush for the outsole. Its step-by-step example uses a leather-upper Superstar, so that distinction is general cleaning guidance rather than a Primeknit-specific test.
How to clean Primeknit without damaging it
- Remove the laces and loose dirt. Brush off loose debris gently before applying liquid.
- Clean the upper. Use a damp soft-bristle brush with a suitable mild cleaning solution or mild soapy water. Work gently; for a small spot, a soft toothbrush can help. A microfiber cloth can lift loosened dirt as you go.
- Wipe away residue. Use a clean cloth to remove dirt and cleaning solution from the upper.
- Clean the outsole separately. Use a firmer brush on the rubber outsole, keeping it away from the knit or mesh.
- Air-dry the shoes. Let them dry at room temperature rather than applying external heat. Keep them out of direct sunlight, as adidas’s US guide advises.
Cleaning-product advice differs between adidas care pages. Check the shoe’s own care instructions if it has an unusual material, coating, or finish, and use a mild solution rather than assuming every sneaker cleaner is suitable.
What should you avoid?
- Hard-bristle brushing or harsh scrubbing on the upper: adidas warns these can damage woven or mesh materials, including those used in models such as Pure Boost and Ultra Boost.
- Machine washing: adidas’s running-shoe guidance cautions that it can discolor or damage fabric.
- External heat: Heat can affect a shoe’s shape, so air-dry at room temperature.
- Bleach and harsh chemicals: Avoid them on knit or mesh shoes.
What to know about cleaning-kit claims
A product listing is not the same as independent testing. adidas’s Germany listing for its Cleaning Kit Originals (JJ7212) describes the kit as compatible with Primeknit and mesh, among other materials; that claim applies to that specific kit and should not be generalized to other formulas or shoe finishes. No brand or brush model has been shown here to outperform another.
