The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the closest all-around alternative to the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), but neither has a clear, universal noise-cancellation win. Independent reviews disagree slightly about which blocks more noise, and their published travel specifications are close. Choose based on the sounds you need to reduce, long-session comfort, carrying case, and the devices you use. For Apple-focused listeners, the AirPods Max 2 are another option, though their strongest case is ecosystem integration rather than being the better practical choice for most people.

Best direct alternative: Sony WH-1000XM6

Sony’s WH-1000XM6 is the most direct alternative if you want flagship over-ear headphones for noise cancellation and travel. The ANC comparison is close, though, and the available reviews do not establish one winner for every listener or environment.

Those findings are not necessarily incompatible: review methods and the kinds of noise being evaluated can affect the result. If you regularly travel around low engine rumble, voices, or other specific sounds, try both with the noise you actually encounter when possible. A small reported ANC difference matters less if one pair fits you better or has controls you prefer.

The listed ANC-on figure is the same for both; Bose is listed as slightly lighter and with more playback time when ANC is off. The differences are small enough that fit and case preference may be more important on a trip.

When AirPods Max 2 makes sense

AirPods Max 2 are most compelling if you are deeply invested in Apple’s ecosystem and want headphones that fit into that device environment. In RTINGS’ comparison, Bose is the better choice for most people across practical considerations including comfort, battery life, case usefulness, companion-app support and EQ across iOS and Android; Apple integration is the AirPods Max 2’s stronger case. See RTINGS’ Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) vs AirPods Max 2 comparison.

SoundGuys reports that in its standardized noise-cancellation rundown, AirPods Max 2 attenuated an average of 89.4% of outside noise, compared with 87% for Bose. In that outlet’s measurements, Apple was stronger from 30–300 Hz, while Bose was stronger above 6 kHz. These are SoundGuys’ test results, not universal performance figures: fit, environment, firmware and test method can change what a listener experiences. See SoundGuys’ comparison.

Which pair should you choose?

Your priority Consider Why
A close direct alternative to Bose Sony WH-1000XM6 RTINGS finds slightly stronger isolation, while What Hi-Fi? gives Bose a slight edge in Quiet mode; the comparisons do not show an uncontested ANC winner.
ANC-on battery life and low weight Sony WH-1000XM6 or Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) What Hi-Fi? lists both at 30 hours with ANC on; their weights are 254 g and 250 g, respectively.
Apple-device integration AirPods Max 2 RTINGS identifies integration with Apple’s ecosystem as the model’s particular strength.
Comfort, a useful hard case, and broad device support Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) RTINGS favors Bose over AirPods Max 2 on these practical points and on battery life and app/EQ support.

Comfort is personal, so try the headphones on if you can—especially if you expect to wear them through a long flight or workday. A close ANC comparison alone cannot tell you which pair will be more comfortable for your head or easier to pack.

How to interpret published battery and ANC measurements

SoundGuys measured 27 hours and 12 minutes of playback for Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) in its standardized battery rundown, compared with Bose’s stated 24-hour claim. That is one outlet’s test result under its test conditions, not a promise of the runtime you will get. SoundGuys also measured the models’ average noise attenuation in its own standardized rundown; those percentages should likewise be treated as test-specific rather than predictions for every fit or setting. See SoundGuys’ test details.

The available comparisons support a practical choice among these three models, but they do not establish a universal ANC champion. Retail pricing, discounts, availability and firmware can change; compare current listings and test fit before buying when possible.
