Buy now, pay later (BNPL) lets eligible shoppers split an online purchase into installments, but the app with the lowest advertised interest is not automatically the cheapest or best fit. Compare the exact checkout offer, fees, payment dates, store coverage, and return process before accepting. This guide focuses on U.S. online shopping; provider terms and availability can change.

What BNPL is and how online checkout works

Buy now, pay later is a form of installment credit. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes it as a way to purchase immediately, often with little or no initial payment, and repay the balance over four or fewer payments. The first installment may be due at checkout, with later payments scheduled automatically. CFPB: What is a buy now, pay later loan?

BNPL can be offered through a provider’s app or account, a browser extension, a digital wallet, or a retailer’s checkout. A provider may also process payments for a retailer and charge the retailer a transaction fee. CFPB: Affirm enforcement action and BNPL market description

  1. Choose BNPL at an eligible retailer’s checkout or open a provider’s app and look for the retailer.
  2. Review the offer shown for that specific purchase, including the amount due now, installment dates, total repayment, and any fees.
  3. Submit the requested information and wait for the provider’s eligibility decision. Approval is not guaranteed.
  4. If you accept, confirm the payment source and schedule. Check the account afterward so you know when automatic payments will be taken.

BNPL apps to compare for online shopping

The CFPB’s 2025 market report identifies Affirm, Cash App Afterpay, Klarna, PayPal, Sezzle, and Zip as large pay-in-four lenders. That identifies prominent providers, not a universal ranking: which one is available depends on the retailer, purchase, location, and the provider’s current eligibility rules. CFPB: Buy Now, Pay Later market trends and consumer impacts

Provider What to check before choosing
Affirm Pay in 4 Affirm states that its Pay in 4 option is 0% APR and is available online and in apps through Apple Pay, subject to eligibility and terms. This does not establish the terms of Affirm’s longer-term loans, which may carry interest. Affirm Pay in 4
Cash App Afterpay Check whether Afterpay appears for the retailer and purchase, then review the exact payment dates, eligibility decision, and applicable charges before accepting.
Klarna Check the offer at the retailer or in Klarna, including its schedule and fees; availability and terms can differ by purchase and account.
PayPal Pay Later Check whether Pay Later is offered in the PayPal checkout for this purchase and inspect its repayment schedule and terms before confirming.
Sezzle Confirm that Sezzle supports the retailer and purchase, and review the offer’s schedule, fees, and account requirements.
Zip Confirm retailer and purchase eligibility in Zip or at checkout; check the total repayment and any fees tied to the offer.

The table is a shortlist, not a promise that every provider offers the same plan or terms at every store. Unless a provider’s current offer explicitly states otherwise, do not assume a plan is interest-free, fee-free, or available to you.

When Apple Pay is involved

Apple says an installment or Pay Later option may appear during Apple Pay checkout online, in apps, or in stores when a supported card or provider is eligible. If an installment card is created, it can be managed in Wallet. Availability depends on the provider and eligibility; Apple Pay itself does not make every BNPL plan available at every merchant. How to tell which app is cheapest

Compare the total amount you will repay for the same purchase, not just the advertised APR or installment size. An offer described as 0% APR may still have other consequences or charges if a payment fails or the terms provide for fees. Affirm’s 0% APR statement applies to its Pay in 4 option, not automatically to all Affirm financing. Affirm Pay in 4 terms

  • Total repayment: Add the amount due now and every scheduled payment, and check the offer for late, returned-payment, or other charges.
  • Payment timing: Note the first due date, number of installments, frequency, and whether payments will be taken automatically.
  • Payment source: Confirm which bank account or card is linked and whether you can change it before a payment is due.
  • Eligibility and credit: Read the provider’s current disclosure for approval criteria and whether or how the plan may be reported. Practices vary.
  • Returns and disputes: Find out how a return, cancellation, missing delivery, or merchant dispute affects scheduled payments, and keep the retailer’s confirmation.
  • Account controls: Check for reminders and a clear view of all open plans so you can manage dates and avoid overlapping commitments.

Risks and safeguards before you check out

Automatic installments can create a cash-flow problem if your linked account does not have enough money on the due date. The CFPB warns that a provider may charge a late fee and that your bank may separately charge an overdraft or nonsufficient-funds fee when an automatic payment is attempted without enough funds. CFPB: BNPL costs and risks

  • Budget for every installment before committing, alongside existing bills and other payment plans.
  • Avoid stacking plans whose payment dates overlap unless you can comfortably cover them all.
  • Keep enough money in the linked account and turn on payment reminders.
  • Save receipts, tracking details, and return confirmations.
  • Read the provider’s instructions for disputes, cancellations, returns, and items that never arrive; do not assume a return automatically stops a scheduled payment.

Can you use a particular BNPL app at a store?

There is no universal list that guarantees coverage across all retailers. Check the merchant’s checkout first, then the provider’s app or account for the retailer and purchase. A plan’s appearance at checkout is not a guarantee of approval; eligibility and terms are decided for the specific offer. If the option is absent, the provider may not support that merchant or purchase, or you may not meet the current eligibility requirements.
