The right BMX tire depends on where you ride: choose a paved-track racing model for a smooth race surface, or a freestyle tire suited to your mix of street, park, transition, and dirt. Before buying, check the size printed on your current tire, its ETRTO/ISO dimensions if shown, rim compatibility, and frame and fork clearance. “20-inch” alone is not enough to confirm fit.
Choose a tire for your discipline and surface
BMX race and freestyle tires are built around different priorities. Product descriptions can help narrow the options, but they are manufacturer claims rather than independent performance tests. Start with the surface you ride most, then confirm the exact size and construction of the variant you are considering.
Paved-track racing
Maxxis Torch is described by Maxxis as designed specifically for racing on paved BMX tracks. The manufacturer recommends front and rear installation and lists 20×1.75, 20×1.95, and 20×2.20 sizes in its product table. Construction and maximum pressure vary by option, so match the exact part number to your wheel and riding needs.

Schwalbe says its tread is optimized for grip out of the gate and in corners, and describes development with INSPYRE and MEYBO and testing by riders Niek Kimmann and Jeremy Rencurel. These are the manufacturer’s statements, not independent test results. The product listing includes multiple sizes and configurations, so do not assume every SX-R fits the same BMX wheel.

Freestyle, street, and park
Maxxis Grifter is positioned as a high-volume BMX tire for freestyle. Its listed sizes range from 20×1.85 to 20×2.40, with casing, bead, and protection differing by option. Compare the specific variant rather than treating “Grifter” as one fixed specification.
Michelin Pilot FreeStyle Racing Line is aimed at freestyle riding including skateparks and BMX trails. Michelin emphasizes grip, durability, and rolling speed in its guidance; the product page describes Magi-X compound as intended for grip in extreme uses. Those are manufacturer claims, not comparative test findings.

Street, park, and dirt mix
CST Vault is described by CST as an all-around tire for street, park, and dirt. Its tread has raised shoulder knobs, and the page lists a dual compound and a 100 PSI maximum. The European product page is also available at CST Tires Europe; check local availability and the exact version with a dealer.

Race and park/transition crossover
Odyssey Super Circuit is described by Odyssey as designed for pro-level BMX racing and park/transition. Odyssey lists 20×1.75, 20×2.10, and 20×2.40 sizes, a foldable bead, 120 TPI K-Lyte Plus casing with puncture protection, weights from 335 g to 520 g, and a 100 PSI maximum. These specifications apply to the listed configurations and are not independent performance findings.

Check size and fit before ordering
A 20-inch label does not identify one universal tire size. The models above include widths from 20×1.60 to 20×2.40, and the SX-R examples also show distinct ETRTO bead-seat dimensions. A tire that shares a nominal wheel label may still be incompatible with your rim or lack adequate frame or fork clearance.
- Read the current tire sidewall. Record the full size marking, not just “20-inch.” Note the ETRTO/ISO dimensions when present.
- Match the replacement to the rim. Check the tire’s bead-seat diameter against the wheel and confirm that the rim supports the tire width and construction.
- Check clearance. Confirm space at the frame and fork for the tire’s actual width and height, including room for normal wheel movement and debris.
- Verify the exact variant. Product families can offer different widths, casings, beads, protection, weights, and pressure ceilings. Use the exact size and part number when checking manufacturer specifications.
Understand pressure ceilings and construction
The maximum pressure printed for a tire is a ceiling, not a universal recommended riding pressure. The examples here have different listed limits: Schwalbe SX-R variants range from 80 to 100 PSI, Odyssey Super Circuit and CST Vault list 100 PSI, and Maxxis Torch has variants listed at 100 or 110 PSI. Michelin lists a 7 bar / 100 PSI maximum for Pilot FreeStyle Racing Line. Follow the tire and rim manufacturers’ limits, and set pressure for your tire, wheel, rider, and conditions rather than automatically inflating to the maximum.

Construction can matter as much as tread when selecting a variant. For example, Odyssey specifies a foldable bead and puncture-protection casing for Super Circuit; Maxxis says Torch and Grifter options differ in construction and protection. Compare the precise specification for the tire size you intend to buy, since a model name alone does not establish the weight or protection of every version.
