If you specifically need rewritable DVD-RAM media, choose a disc that your exact drive or recorder supports and verify its capacity and side configuration before buying. Panasonic’s documented 4.7 GB DVD-RAM packs are discontinued products, so their specifications are useful for comparison but do not confirm current stock. DVD-RAM is a legacy format, not a modern high-capacity archive solution.

Which blank DVD-RAM discs are worth considering?

Panasonic’s archived specifications provide two clear reference products: the LM-AF120LE5 five-disc pack and LM-AF120LE10. Both are 12 cm, single-sided, rewritable DVD-RAM media rated at 4.7 GB and 1–3x recording speed. Panasonic lists the LE5 package quantity as five; the cited LE10 specifications do not state a package quantity. Both pages are in Panasonic’s discontinued-products support area, so these are specifications—not recommendations based on current stock or condition.

Model Capacity and sides Rewriteable Recording speed Pack quantity Availability context
Panasonic LM-AF120LE5 4.7 GB, single-sided Yes 1–3x 5 discs Discontinued product page; current stock not established. Panasonic specifications
Panasonic LM-AF120LE10 4.7 GB, single-sided Yes 1–3x Not stated by Panasonic Discontinued product page; current stock not established. Panasonic specifications

Panasonic documentation also distinguishes 4.7 GB single-sided media from 9.4 GB double-sided media. The 9.4 GB figure is for a double-sided disc, not a single side; confirm which construction a listing describes. Panasonic media information

Check compatibility before choosing a disc

Do not assume an optical drive or recorder can write DVD-RAM just because it reads or writes DVDs. Support depends on the exact model. For example, Philips lists DVD-RAM support in the specifications for its SPD2525BM/00 internal SATA drive, illustrating that it is a model-level feature. Panasonic’s media guidance and recorder documentation likewise distinguish supported media, and recordings may not play on incompatible equipment.

DVD-RAM or another DVD format?

DVD-RAM is the choice when you specifically need rewritable DVD media and have compatible equipment. Sony describes DVD-RAM as theoretically allowing more than 100,000 rewrites per disc; that is a manufacturer’s theoretical statement, not a guarantee for an individual disc. Sony support: DVD formats

DVD-R is different: Verbatim describes its DVD-R as a 4.7 GB, one-time recording format. If you do not need repeated rewriting, DVD-R may fit that use, but it is not a substitute for DVD-RAM when your workflow requires that format. Verbatim advises users with older equipment to check the device manufacturer’s recommended DVD format. Verbatim DVD-R information

Is DVD-RAM suitable for long-term archiving?

There is no DVD-RAM lifespan figure established by the cited longevity evidence. The NIST/Library of Congress study, published November 1, 2005, examined several CD and DVD types—including DVD-RW and DVD+RW—but its abstract does not name DVD-RAM. It should not be treated as a direct DVD-RAM lifespan test. Library of Congress: Optical Media Longevity Study

The Library of Congress identifies manufacturing quality, labels or markings, compatibility between media and recorder, initial recording quality, media age when recorded, storage conditions, and handling as factors that affect optical-media longevity. These factors argue for careful handling and more than one copy when data matters; they do not support a fixed lifespan promise for DVD-RAM.
