The right battery backup sump pump is the one that fits your existing pump and pit, can lift water through your discharge line, and has a battery and monitoring setup suited to your needs. There is no single best model established by the available product information: compare systems by configuration and published output at your required lift, then verify the exact model, battery, and installation requirements.
What a battery backup sump pump does
A battery backup is a secondary pump intended to move water when the primary pump fails or household power is lost. It can be installed as an add-on beside an existing primary pump, or bought as part of a preassembled primary-and-backup package. Manufacturers offer both arrangements; for example, Little Giant lists add-on and preassembled SPBS configurations, while Pentair’s Hydromatic FG-3100 line included backup-only and pre-plumbed combinations.
The choice is not simply between two pumps with different flow ratings. A system must fit the basin and plumbing, have an appropriate switch and discharge arrangement, and receive power from a compatible battery that can be charged and monitored as intended.
How to compare backup sump pump systems
Choose the right configuration
If your existing primary pump is suitable and you want to keep it, compare backup-only systems that can be installed alongside it. If you are replacing or building a complete setup, a combination package may simplify selecting a matched primary and backup arrangement. Confirm what the package actually includes: “system” does not necessarily mean the battery is included.

Compare flow at your required lift
Find the vertical distance the backup pump must raise water from the basin to the discharge point, then compare each model’s flow at that lift. A maximum flow or zero-lift rating does not tell you how much water the pump can move through your actual discharge height. Pentair’s discontinued FG-3100 models illustrate the distinction: the manufacturer lists 21 GPM at a 10-foot lift and a 15-foot maximum lift. Those figures are an example of lift-specific specifications, not a current product recommendation.
Check the battery and charging details
Verify battery voltage, type, capacity requirements, whether it is included, and the charger’s features. Little Giant’s SPBS information specifies a size 27, 12 V deep-cycle battery and says it is not included. Check the manual and exact model listing before buying a battery; do not assume that a battery supplied with another pump will be compatible.

Review alarms, switches, fittings, and fit
Compare how the backup pump is activated, what alarms or remote monitoring are provided, and which fittings or check valves come with the package. Measure the basin and inspect the discharge plumbing so the backup pump, float or switch, and piping can be installed without interfering with the primary pump. A package that appears suitable on paper may not fit an existing pit or connect to its discharge setup.

Confirm availability, warranty, and installation requirements
Check the manufacturer’s current product page and the exact model documentation for availability, warranty, included components, and installation instructions. Configurations and model status can change. Pentair marks its FG-3100RF and FG-3100RC products discontinued, so their published specifications should not be treated as evidence that they are currently available.

How long will a battery backup run?
There is no reliable one-size-fits-all runtime figure. Runtime depends on battery capacity and on how often and how long the pump runs as water enters the pit. Use a runtime claim only when it is tied to a specific pump and battery, with the operating conditions stated. The product information summarized above does not provide comparable runtime tests across these systems.
Battery backup versus water-powered backup
Water-powered backup pumps are another category identified in the available product comparison. They require a nearby water supply and may involve more complex installation. Whether one is appropriate depends on the home’s water supply and installation conditions; the information available here does not establish a general performance advantage over battery systems.

Installation, testing, and maintenance
Follow the manual for the exact pump model when installing, testing, or maintaining a system. Little Giant provides an SPBS maintenance resource, but the product information does not establish a universal maintenance schedule. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the system’s test procedure, battery care, alarm checks, and any recommended service intervals.
Consumer Reports’ January 1, 2026 comparison says it tested 11 backup sump pump systems for flow rate and battery draw. - Decide whether you need a backup-only add-on or a primary-and-backup package.
- Measure the lift to the discharge point and compare published flow at that height.
- Confirm battery type, capacity requirements, included status, and charger details.
- Check alarm, monitoring, float or switch design, and included fittings or check valves.
