The best backpack for a high school student is the one that fits their body, holds what their actual school day requires, and works with their laptop, school rules, and commute. The JanSport Big Student is one candidate worth comparing: OutdoorGearLab named it its favorite classic school backpack after reporting tests of 15 school backpacks, but that review does not make it the right choice for every student.
How to choose a backpack for high school
Start with the student’s daily load and how they get around—not the largest capacity or the most pockets. Compare each option on fit, usable space, laptop protection, organization, and the route between home and class. Then check current model details, price, return terms, and school rules before buying.
- Fit: The pack should be proportional to the student, with broad adjustable straps and a back panel that keeps it close and centered.
- Capacity: Allow room for the schedule’s books, lunch, water, chargers, and any activity gear without choosing excess space that encourages overpacking.
- Laptop fit: Check the compartment’s measurements against the laptop and protective case, not just the screen-size label.
- Daily logistics: Consider locker dimensions, stairs, buses, carrying between classes, and whether school policy allows clear or rolling bags.
- Value: Compare current prices and return terms, and look for durability evidence for the exact model rather than assuming all backpacks from a brand are equivalent.

How much backpack capacity does a high school student need?
There is no universal liter requirement: schedules, body size, locker access, and commute all affect what a student needs to carry. Vans recommends 22L for most high school or college days and 30L for a student who needs more room. Those are the manufacturer’s buying recommendations, not a standard that applies to every student. HP’s 17L Campus and 20L Campus XL are product capacities, not evidence that those sizes fit a typical schedule.

Make a realistic list of what travels in the bag on an ordinary day and on the heaviest day. If a locker lets the student leave some books at school, or they do not carry activity gear, the larger option may be unnecessary. A bigger pack is not automatically more comfortable: as Dr. Saji Azerf, MD, FAAP, of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Section of Orthopedics, puts it, “Bigger is not necessarily better.” Read the AAP’s backpack-safety guidance.
How to check whether a laptop will fit
A screen-size label alone cannot confirm a fit. Laptop dimensions vary, and a protective case adds bulk. Measure the laptop with its case if the student plans to carry it that way, then compare those measurements with the backpack’s laptop compartment. If the manufacturer does not provide the compartment dimensions, seek confirmation from the seller or choose a bag with a clear fit policy.

- Measure the laptop’s width, height, and thickness, including its protective case if used.
- Find the exact backpack variant’s sleeve or compartment measurements—not only its advertised laptop screen size.
- Compare all three dimensions, allowing for the sleeve opening and any padding that reduces usable room.
- If dimensions are unavailable or close, check the retailer’s fit and return terms before purchase.
For example, HP describes the Campus as fitting most 15.6-inch diagonal laptops, but that wording is not a guarantee for every 15.6-inch model or case. HP’s Campus XL listing describes a 16-inch laptop pouch; verify the exact version and measurements before relying on that label.
Fit the pack and manage its weight
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends choosing a backpack proportional to the child, using two broad adjustable shoulder straps, wearing both straps, and keeping the pack close and centered. AAP advises that a child’s backpack should weigh no more than 15% of body weight. This is safety guidance, not a guarantee that a bag at that limit will feel comfortable for every child; an individual concern warrants advice from a healthcare professional. Do not choose a specialized design until checking the school’s rules and the student’s route. A rolling bag can be inconvenient on stairs, crowded buses, or between classes; it also needs to fit in any locker the student expects to use. Clear-bag requirements can rule out an otherwise suitable backpack. Confirm the policy with the school and consider how the bag will be carried or stored throughout the day.
