A good auto-follow drone is not simply one with a “Follow Me” label: it must track the right subject, move in the way your activity requires, and leave you able to intervene if tracking falters. DJI’s documented options include the Mini 4 Pro, with ActiveTrack 360° and omnidirectional obstacle sensing, and the Air 3, whose ActiveTrack 5.0 uses multiple vision sensors to recognize and distinguish a subject. The right choice depends on the route, framing, sensing, and battery setup—not on a feature name alone.
What an auto-follow drone does
An auto-follow drone uses automated tracking to keep a person or other selected subject in its camera view while the aircraft moves. The phrase can describe different systems: vision-based tracking uses camera sensors to recognize and follow a subject, while GPS-based following uses location data to guide the aircraft toward a device or transmitter. A model’s exact method and supported modes matter, so check the current manual and product documentation rather than assuming all “follow-me” features work alike. DJI’s guide describes follow-me use for activities including cycling, running, hiking, and skateboarding, but its 2024 roundup is not a current model manual. DJI: How Do Follow Me Drones Work?
How tracking modes change the shot
Tracking a subject and moving the drone around that subject are separate behaviors. DJI’s ActiveTrack mission documentation distinguishes three useful patterns:
- Trace: The aircraft follows behind the subject at a set distance, useful when you want a trailing view.
- Profile: The aircraft travels parallel to the subject, creating a side-on view.
- Spotlight: The camera points toward the subject, but the drone does not necessarily keep moving at a constant following distance. This is camera aiming, not the same thing as following a person along a route.
Preset QuickShot moves are a different kind of automation: the aircraft performs a planned camera movement rather than continuously following your chosen path. DJI’s developer documentation explains these distinctions in its ActiveTrack mission documentation.

The official sources support comparing these models on stated tracking features and battery figures. They do not establish a head-to-head test or an overall “best” ranking.

How to choose for your activity
Match the mode to the route
For a straight trail or road, a trailing Trace-style view may be the framing you want. A Profile-style view can suit a side-on shot, but a parallel route needs room to maneuver. For a shot where the drone stays in place or follows a separate movement while keeping the camera aimed at you, Spotlight-style behavior may fit better than a follow mode. Confirm the exact mode names and availability for the aircraft you are considering.

Consider speed, turns, and background
A predictable, open route gives an automated tracker fewer obstacles and visual distractions than a crowded path, dense tree cover, or abrupt changes in direction. DJI notes that environment can affect follow performance and recommends open-space use. Obstacle sensing can assist, but it is not a guarantee against collision or a substitute for planning a safe route.

Check the frame as well as the lock
A drone can keep a subject recognized without producing the composition you want. Consider whether you need a rear view, a side view, or a camera that points toward you while the aircraft moves differently. If the camera view loses the subject or the composition becomes unusable, be ready to stop the automation and take control.
Read flight-time figures as maximums
DJI lists up to 34 minutes for the Mini 4 Pro with its standard battery and up to 45 minutes with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus. Those manufacturer figures do not establish how long a real follow shot will last. Active tracking, recording, wind, temperature, and other flight conditions can reduce usable time. DJI’s Air 3 FAQ describes controlled conditions for maximum-time measurement, including windless conditions at sea level and constant speed; a maximum is not a promise for a moving outdoor shoot.

Set up and fly with intervention in mind
- Choose a clear location. Use open space with an unobstructed route, as DJI recommends for follow-drone use. Check the current aircraft manual and local requirements before flying.
- Start tracking from the camera view. DJI support instructions describe selecting a subject in the camera view and then choosing a tracking mode. Follow the on-screen workflow for your specific aircraft and app version. DJI support: tracking instructions
- Use the mode that fits the planned shot. Select a behind, parallel, or camera-pointing behavior as appropriate; do not treat preset camera moves as interchangeable with continuous follow tracking.
- Begin with sufficient battery. DJI’s guide suggests maintaining at least 30% battery for ActiveTrack use. This is guidance from that guide, not a universal threshold for every model; follow the current aircraft manual and plan for your route and conditions.
- Monitor the aircraft and be ready to take over. DJI’s SDK documentation says that if tracking confidence drops, the aircraft may stop moving relative to the subject and notify the user or request confirmation. Automation can be interrupted, so keep control available throughout the flight.
Battery and recording accessories
If longer planned sessions are important, check battery compatibility for the exact aircraft before buying a spare. DJI specifically associates the Mini 4 Pro’s up-to-45-minute maximum with its Intelligent Flight Battery Plus; that does not mean a tracking session will run for that long. For recording media, verify the selected model’s current requirements rather than assuming one card works across drones.
