For at-home whitening, peroxide strips and gels delivered by strips or trays are the main options for bleaching natural teeth. The right choice depends on fit, routine, sensitivity, and dental work—not on an LED light or a product’s place in an editorial roundup. Whitening toothpaste is better suited to surface-stain maintenance than changing a tooth’s underlying color.
How at-home whitening kits work
Most over-the-counter whitening strips and gels use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to bleach stains. The product format controls how the gel reaches the teeth: strips adhere to the tooth surfaces, while trays hold gel against them. Whitening toothpastes generally use abrasives to remove extrinsic, or surface, stains; they do not significantly change intrinsic stains or a tooth’s natural color. The American Dental Association cites a 2020 systematic review that found whitening dentifrices less effective than strips for whitening, with comparable adverse effects such as sensitivity and oral irritation. ADA overview of teeth whitening
Cosmetic dentist Sharon Huang, DDS, told Allure that whitening “simply lifts stains from your teeth to bring your teeth back to their natural color” and “doesn’t make teeth look artificially white or opaque.” Allure’s September 8, 2026 guide
Which whitening format should you choose?
| Format | What it does | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Whitening strips | Deliver peroxide gel directly to tooth surfaces. | Check coverage, active ingredient, concentration, wear time, and application schedule on the current package. Strips may be less adaptable to a particular mouth than fitted trays. |
| Prefilled trays | Hold whitening gel against the teeth in a ready-to-use tray. | Check fit, gel strength, wear time, and whether gel reaches the gums. Current editorial coverage describes Opalescence Go in 10% and 15% hydrogen peroxide versions; verify the exact product and directions because these details are secondary-source reporting. NewMouth’s 2026 comparison |
| Dentist-fitted trays | Deliver dentist-supplied whitening gel in trays made to fit in a dental office. | Fit and professional guidance are advantages to discuss with a dentist; this is distinct from an OTC kit. Dentist-supplied professional products are not eligible for the ADA Seal. ADA overview of teeth whitening |
| LED kits | Pair a whitening product with an LED attachment. | Compare the gel’s active ingredient, concentration, directions, and coverage. Do not assume the light itself is what produces whitening; verify the current kit version and its claims. |
| Whitening toothpaste | Primarily removes surface stains through abrasives. | Useful for surface-stain maintenance, but not equivalent to peroxide strips for changing intrinsic tooth color. ADA overview of teeth whitening |
Current 2026 editorial comparisons include Crest 3D Whitestrips, Opalescence Go prefilled trays, and Auraglow’s LED kit. These are examples of formats, not clinical rankings or evidence that one product will deliver a particular shade. Formulations, package contents, and retailer listings can change. What to check before buying
- Format and coverage: Decide whether strips or trays suit your teeth and the application routine you can follow.
- Active ingredient and concentration: Read the current package rather than relying on a retailer summary or an older review.
- Directions: Check wear time and number of applications, and use the product only as directed.
- Sensitivity history: Higher peroxide concentrations can increase the risk of sensitivity. If you already have sensitive teeth, ask a dentist about risks and benefits first. ADA guidance
- Gum contact: Gel can irritate gums, particularly if it is applied improperly or a tray fits poorly.
- Dental work: Crowns, implants, and other tooth-colored restorations do not whiten. Ask a dentist whether bleaching could leave a noticeable shade difference.
- ADA Seal: Acceptance is voluntary and applies to products meeting requirements for their evaluated claims. Check the exact product or SKU; do not assume every item from a brand carries the Seal. ADA Seal of Acceptance
Will whitening cause sensitivity or gum irritation?
Temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation are the most common adverse effects of vital tooth whitening, according to the ADA. Sensitivity is typically mild and transient, but it may be more prevalent with higher peroxide concentrations. Peroxide touching the gums—including through a poor-fitting tray or improper gel application—can cause irritation. Follow the package directions, keep gel off the gums as instructed, and stop using the product and seek dental advice if symptoms are significant or persist. ADA whitening guidance
A dental exam and cleaning can help identify oral-health concerns before starting a whitening course. The ADA advises people with pre-existing sensitivity to consult a dentist about the risks and benefits. ADA News: When to whiten teeth

Do whitening kits work on crowns, veneers, or implants?
No. Bleaching changes the color of natural teeth, not crowns, implants, and other tooth-colored restorations. If natural teeth lighten while restorations keep their existing shade, a mismatch may become more noticeable. If you have restorations, ask your dentist about the likely appearance before using a whitening kit. ADA overview of teeth whitening
Are LED whitening kits worth considering?
An LED attachment is a feature of the delivery kit, not a reason by itself to expect better whitening. Compare the active gel and its concentration, how it covers the teeth, and the required routine. Current editorial roundups list Auraglow as an LED-kit example, but package details and product listings may change; check the exact current version and follow its directions. Editorial comparisons can help identify available formats and products, but they are not clinical rankings or guarantees of results. For example, NewMouth reports that selected Crest 3D Whitestrips SKUs carry ADA acceptance; verify the exact current box and ADA listing rather than generalizing that status to the entire family.
