There is no single best reading-list app. The right choice depends on whether you mainly need a simple to-read shelf, mood-based discovery, detailed statistics, social or book-club reading, or session and habit tracking. Use the comparison below to match the app to that job, then verify its current platform support, export tools, privacy terms, and paid-feature limits before moving your library.

Quick decision guide

  • Choose an established community tracker if you want a large social layer around your shelves, reviews, and friends’ activity. Goodreads is the established option identified in current comparisons, but check its present-day features and integrations rather than assuming every older description is still current.
  • Choose The StoryGraph if organization, statistics, moods, and reading-pattern analysis matter most. Its Google Play listing documents reading statuses, custom shelves and tags, statistics comparisons, and import of several Goodreads shelf types.
  • Choose Hardcover or Fable when social reading or clubs are central. The available comparisons identify both as modern social options, while Fable is especially associated with book-club reading. Confirm the current tracking tools and supported devices in each app’s own listing.
  • Choose Libby when your main activity is borrowing and reading library books. It is a borrowing service first, not necessarily the best standalone record of every book you have read.
  • Choose Audible when audiobooks are your primary format. The comparisons surface it for audiobook-first readers, but do not establish how well it works as a cross-format personal reading-history manager.
  • Choose Bookmory or Bookly if your goal is to log reading sessions and build a daily habit as well as maintain a book list. Those session-oriented features are unnecessary if you only want a catalog.

Prices, paywalls, export options, and platform availability can change by region and over time. Treat the table as a decision map, not a permanent ranking.

What a reading-list app should do

Keep separate reading states

At minimum, look for a way to distinguish books you plan to read, books in progress, and books you have finished. A useful tracker should let you move a title between those states without losing notes or dates. If you also abandon books, add a did-not-finish state rather than forcing an unfinished title into your completed history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Support shelves, lists, or tags that match your system

Some readers need only one to-read shelf. Others maintain lists such as “short books,” “owned,” “library,” “research,” or “favorites.” Check whether the app supplies fixed shelves, user-created lists, free-form tags, or a combination. Also check whether those labels survive an import from another service; an app may import book records while dropping your custom organization.

Make discovery useful without confusing it with tracking

Recommendation tools serve different purposes. Mood, pace, and subject filters can help when you know how you want a book to feel. A large review and friend network can help when you want community signals. Current comparison pages describe those strengths, but the available evidence is not a controlled test of recommendation quality, so choose the discovery style you actually use.

Offer statistics only if you will use them

Statistics can show reading totals, genres, moods, pace, and changes across months or years. They are valuable for readers who enjoy reviewing patterns or setting goals, but they add little for someone who wants a quiet catalog. Confirm which statistics are generated automatically and which require you to enter dates, page counts, ratings, or session data.

Separate social reading from private cataloging

Friends’ activity, comments, buddy reads, and clubs can motivate you, yet they also make an app feel more public. The comparisons identify Goodreads, Hardcover, and Fable as social or club-oriented choices. That is a feature description, not a privacy audit: read the current privacy policy and account controls if visibility matters.

Check session and habit tools

Session timers, daily streaks, and minutes-read logs are useful when the problem is consistency. They are extra work when your only requirement is remembering which books you want to read. Bookmory and Bookly appear in current comparisons as options that emphasize this layer.

Verify portability, device support, and cost

Before investing time in a database, confirm that the app runs on your devices, allows a usable export, and keeps the features you need in its free tier or chosen subscription. The comparison evidence treats formats, platforms, export, privacy, and price as core criteria, but it does not establish a current authoritative price or complete paywall matrix for these apps.

How each app fits a different reader

Goodreads: community-first tracking

Goodreads is treated in the comparisons as an established place to track books and participate in a broad reader community. It is a sensible starting point if seeing friends’ activity, reading reviews, and maintaining a public-facing profile matters as much as the private list itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not carry over assumptions from older guides about current integrations, user numbers, export formats, or exact shelf behavior. None of those details is established here. If you are choosing it primarily as a data store, inspect the current account settings and export instructions first.

The StoryGraph: organization and analytics

The StoryGraph has the clearest feature evidence in the available material. Its Google Play listing describes reading statuses, custom shelves represented as tags, custom tags, and comparison of statistics across portions of your library. That combination suits readers who want more structure than a single to-read list.

An editorial account also highlights reading totals, genres, moods, pace details, and changes over time, and describes those analytics as a reason for switching. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a controlled comparison of results. Use the app if those views help you decide what to read or understand your habits; skip them if you prefer minimal data entry.

Hardcover: a social alternative to investigate

Hardcover appears in current comparisons as a modern book-tracking and social option. The available evidence does not provide a complete, current list of shelves, statistics, supported platforms, export formats, or prices. It is therefore best approached as a candidate for readers who value social features, followed by a direct check of the current product listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fable: group reading and clubs

Fable is surfaced primarily for book-club and social reading use. If your choice of app is driven by scheduled discussions, shared reading, or finding groups, investigate it on that basis. Confirm that its current tracking workflow covers your personal to-read and finished lists before treating it as your only catalog.

Libby: a borrowing workflow, not necessarily a life-to-date catalog

Libby fits readers whose books come mainly from participating libraries. It helps you discover and borrow available titles, but a borrowing service and a personal reading-history database solve different problems. If you want a permanent record across library loans, purchases, and books borrowed elsewhere, pair your borrowing workflow with a tracker that explicitly supports that history.

Audible: audiobook-first use

Audible is included in comparisons for readers whose primary format is audio. Before selecting it as your universal reading-list manager, check whether it records the cross-format states, tags, notes, and exports you need. The supplied evidence does not establish that it does.

Bookmory and Bookly: habit-oriented logging

Bookmory and Bookly are identified alongside trackers that emphasize sessions or habits. They may be a better fit than a community catalog if your immediate goal is to create a regular reading routine and see time or session progress. Verify their current device support, statistics, data portability, and paid boundaries before entering a large library.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the job in one sentence. For example: “I need a permanent to-read and finished list,” “I want mood-based discovery,” “I want yearly statistics,” “I need a book club,” or “I want to read every day.” If you name two jobs, rank them.
  2. Decide whether the catalog should be private, social, or both. Social activity can motivate you, while a private catalog reduces exposure and notification noise. Read the current privacy controls rather than inferring them from an app’s marketing position.
  3. List the fields you will actually maintain. Common fields include status, rating, notes, date started, date finished, format, ownership, and tags. A feature is useful only if you are willing to keep it accurate.
  4. Test portability before building the library. Look for a documented export and inspect what it contains. If you are migrating, confirm whether statuses, dates, ratings, notes, and custom labels transfer separately.
  5. Check every device you use. Verify the current app or web version for your phone, tablet, and computer. A tracker that is excellent on one device but unavailable where you read can become a second inbox.
  6. Compare the free and paid boundaries for your region. Record which functions you need—such as statistics, unlimited tags, export, or club participation—and confirm they are included in the plan you would actually use.
  7. Run a small trial. Add ten representative books: a planned title, an in-progress title, a finished title, an abandoned title, a book with an alternate format, and books that need custom tags. Try searching, editing, filtering, and exporting before importing everything.

Moving from Goodreads to The StoryGraph

The StoryGraph’s Google Play listing states that it can import Goodreads shelves named currently-reading, read, to-read, and did-not-finish. It also says custom Goodreads shelves map to custom tags. That is a specific documented migration path; do not generalize it to every other tracker or assume that every field transfers.

  1. Prepare the source account. Review shelf names and remove duplicates or titles you no longer want. Keep a copy of any notes, dates, ratings, or custom metadata that the destination instructions do not promise to preserve.
  2. Export or authorize the source data using the destination app’s current instructions. Menu names and file requirements can change, so follow the current migration screen rather than an old screenshot.
  3. Map statuses deliberately. Confirm that currently-reading, read, to-read, and did-not-finish titles landed in the intended states. Do not treat a successful file upload as proof that every record is correct.
  4. Audit custom organization. The listing says custom shelves map to custom tags. Check several tags, including one with multiple words, and verify that no important shelf was omitted or merged unexpectedly.
  5. Spot-check metadata. Compare authors, editions, formats, ratings, dates, and notes on a sample from each shelf. Correct mismatches before deleting the original data.
  6. Keep the original export temporarily. Retain the source file and account until you have confirmed that the destination contains the records you need and that its export, if available, is usable.

Set up a tracker that stays useful

  1. Start with a small controlled vocabulary. Use the built-in reading states first. Add only a few tags such as format, ownership, priority, or subject; dozens of overlapping labels make filtering harder.
  2. Choose one rule for finished books. Decide whether “finished” means read to the end, listened to the end, or intentionally stopped. Apply the rule consistently so statistics remain meaningful.
  3. Record dates at the level you can maintain. If exact start and finish dates are too much work, record only the month or the completion date. Incomplete data is better than a system you abandon.
  4. Separate discovery from commitment. Put merely interesting titles in a low-priority list, and reserve your main to-read shelf for books you realistically expect to start. This prevents an ever-growing queue from hiding your actual choices.
  5. Review the list on a schedule. A monthly cleanup can remove duplicate editions, expired library holds, and titles that no longer fit your interests. Do this before adding another discovery source.
  6. Export periodically when the app allows it. Save dated copies in a place you control. An export is useful only if you know how to read it and what information it contains.

Privacy, export, platform, and price checks

Privacy

Determine whether your shelves, reviews, reading activity, profile, and club participation are public by default or individually configurable. Check account deletion, data-retention, analytics, and third-party sharing language. The comparisons identify social emphasis, but they do not constitute a privacy audit of any app.

Export

Look for a documented export format and a list of included fields. A spreadsheet containing titles is not equivalent to a full backup if it omits tags, dates, notes, ratings, or reading status. Test the export with the ten-book trial before committing your complete history.

Platform support

Confirm support for every device on which you plan to add or review books. Store availability can differ by country, and a web interface may have different capabilities from a mobile app. The supplied evidence specifically documents a Google Play listing for The StoryGraph; it does not establish a complete platform matrix for the other options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price and paywalls

Search-result pages describe free core features and paid tiers for some services, but no authoritative current price table is established here. Check the app’s own current pricing page or store listing for your region, billing period, taxes, trial terms, and which functions—especially statistics, export, unlimited tags, or club access—are restricted.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by popularity alone

A large community does not guarantee the organization, privacy, or statistics you need. Start with your primary job, then evaluate community size as one criterion.

Confusing a reading service with a reading history

Library-borrowing and audiobook services help you obtain or consume books. They may not preserve a complete record of books from every source and format. Decide whether you need access to books, a catalog of books, or both.

Importing without an audit

A migration can complete while silently changing statuses, merging editions, or dropping notes. Check representative records and keep the original export until the audit is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Over-tagging

Every new tag feels helpful until filtering becomes inconsistent. Begin with a short list tied to decisions you make, such as what to read next or where a book came from.

Assuming old feature lists and prices still apply

Apps change names, platforms, integrations, and paywalls. Verify volatile details directly before subscribing or moving your only copy of a library.

Which type of reader benefits from each approach?

  • Catalog keeper: Prioritize reliable statuses, shelves, tags, search, and export. Social or habit features are optional.
  • Data-oriented reader: Prioritize statistics, comparisons, mood and pace fields, and consistent date entry. The StoryGraph has the most specifically documented fit for this profile in the available evidence.
  • Community reader: Prioritize friends’ activity, reviews, clubs, and discussion tools. Goodreads, Hardcover, and Fable are the social options surfaced in comparisons, with different emphases that you should verify in their current listings.
  • Library borrower: Prioritize catalog availability, holds, loans, and return reminders. Libby addresses that borrowing workflow; add a separate tracker if you need a permanent cross-source history.
  • Audiobook listener: Prioritize playback and audiobook-library features, then check whether your chosen service can represent print, ebook, and audio titles together if that matters.
  • Habit builder: Prioritize session logs, streaks, reminders, and time goals. Bookmory and Bookly are the options surfaced for this emphasis, subject to current feature and price checks.

Bottom line

Choose the app that matches the work you want done: organization and analytics point toward The StoryGraph; community points toward an established social tracker; clubs point toward Fable or another current group-reading option; library borrowing points toward Libby; audiobook-first use points toward Audible; and session habits point toward Bookmory or Bookly. Before you migrate, verify the exact import, export, privacy, platform, and price terms in the current listing—especially if your reading history is valuable or difficult to recreate.
