Short answer: Use GasBuddy when your main job is comparing nearby pump prices, Waze when you want a fuel stop selected inside an active route, and AAA Fuel Price Finder to check whether a local price is high or low against daily averages. No app can guarantee the cheapest final fill-up for every driver. The result depends on your location, fuel grade, cash or credit price, how recently a station reported its price, station coverage, vehicle fuel economy, and whether reaching the station requires a detour.

What to check before trusting any displayed price
A low number in an app is useful only when it describes the fuel you will actually buy. Check these items in order:
- Fuel grade: Regular, midgrade, premium, and diesel prices can differ substantially. Make sure the app is showing the grade your vehicle requires.
- Payment method: A cash, debit, or membership price may not match the credit-card price. GasBuddy can toggle cash versus credit where a station supplies both.
- Update time: Crowd-sourced reports can lag behind a pump change. Prefer a recently reported price and treat an old report as a lead to verify, not a promise.
- Station coverage: Filters, fuel type, distance limits, and payment settings can hide stations. A missing location is not proof that it has no price data.
- Total trip cost: A station that is a few cents cheaper can cost more if you burn fuel and time reaching it. Compare the saving on the gallons you will purchase with the detour cost.

For a planned trip, search the destination city or ZIP/postal code instead of relying only on your current location. This lets you compare the area where you expect to stop. Repeat the search after changing the fuel grade or payment method; the cheapest result can change when either setting changes.
Reset filters when a station is missing
GasBuddy’s station documentation notes that some club stations may not initially appear because of filters. If you are comparing Costco or Sam’s Club locations, reset filters and review the distance, fuel type, and payment settings before concluding that the station is absent. Membership prices may also require a club membership and a particular payment method, so compare like-for-like prices.

Use report freshness as a confidence signal
GasBuddy relies on station information and user reports. Its App Store listing says, “When you report a price or review a station, you help other drivers find the best places to fuel up.” That model can produce useful local detail, but it also means prices can become stale between reports. Look for the update time, compare two or three nearby stations, and be cautious about driving far for a small difference.
Fuel-usage tracking
The App Store listing also describes fuel-usage tracking and reports more than 100 million downloads, a figure attributed to the 2025 listing. Tracking your own consumption can help you estimate how many gallons you will buy and whether a detour is worthwhile, but the app’s download count does not establish that a particular station has the current lowest price.
When GasBuddy is the right first app

Waze: best when navigation and fuel choice must stay together
Waze is strongest when you are already navigating and want to choose a fuel stop without maintaining a separate comparison workflow. Its support documentation describes sorting gas stations by price, distance, or brand and setting gas-station preferences.
Set up the station comparison
- Open Waze and start the route you intend to drive.
- Open the route’s gas-station or add-a-stop option.
- Set your preferred fuel type and, if useful, a preferred brand.
- Sort the available stations by price, distance, or brand.
- Inspect the route preview and the added driving required before selecting a stop.
Waze’s product page states: “Yes, the waze app is 100% free to download and use across all supported platforms, including iOS, Android, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Android Automotive OS (AAOS) built-in vehicle systems.” That makes it practical for drivers whose phone or vehicle already uses Waze for turn-by-turn guidance.
Price versus detour time
The lowest displayed price is not automatically the lowest-cost stop. A station away from the route may require extra miles to leave and rejoin the road, and a busy location can add waiting time. Waze’s value is that the station choice is shown in the context of your actual route, so you can judge the trade-off before committing.

When Waze is the better choice
- You are driving a route now and do not want to switch between apps.
- You need to compare price with distance and route impact in one screen.
- You use Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, or Android Automotive OS and want the fuel stop in the navigation environment.
- You care more about a sensible stop along the route than the absolute lowest local price.
AAA Fuel Price Finder: a benchmark, not a live quote
AAA’s Fuel Price Finder covers more than 100,000 stations in the United States and publishes a daily fuel-gauge report with national, state, and local average prices. Those averages answer a different question from a station-level price app: they show the market context for the day rather than guaranteeing what a specific pump charges at this minute.
Use the averages to spot an outlier
- Check the daily national or state average for the fuel grade you use.
- Open the local average for the area where you plan to buy.
- Compare the quote you see in GasBuddy, Waze, or on a station sign with that benchmark.
- If the local quote is much higher or lower than the average, verify the station’s current pump price and payment conditions before making a long detour.
AAA is particularly useful for trip-cost planning. It can help you decide whether prices are generally lower across a county or state line, but it cannot tell you that a particular station’s pump has not changed since the daily report was calculated.
What AAA cannot establish
An average does not identify the cheapest station, distinguish every cash-versus-credit difference, or account for a specific club-membership price. Treat it as a sanity check and planning input, then confirm the station-level price through a current listing or at the pump.
Upside and other rewards apps: calculate cashback separately
A 2025 Midwest Biofuels Task Force comparison places Upside in the gas-rewards and cashback category alongside GasBuddy, Waze, and AAA. Cashback can lower your net cost, but an offer does not prove that the participating station has the lowest posted price.
Apply the offer only after checking the pump price
- Compare the station’s posted price with nearby alternatives using GasBuddy or Waze.
- Read the cashback offer’s eligibility, payment, and redemption requirements in the rewards app.
- Confirm that the offer applies to the fuel grade and station you will use.
- Subtract the reward you realistically expect to receive from the purchase cost.
- Add any extra driving cost and time before deciding that the offer wins.
Current offer values and publisher-program terms were not established for this guide, so verify them in the app immediately before purchase. A reward that expires, requires a specific payment method, or applies only after a qualifying transaction should not be treated as guaranteed savings.

How to calculate whether a cheaper station is really cheaper
Compare the complete stop, not just the advertised cents per gallon. A simple calculation is:
Net saving = (price difference × gallons purchased) − (extra miles × your vehicle’s fuel cost per mile) − the value you place on extra time.
Use your own expected gallons and fuel economy. If the cheaper station is on the route, the extra-mile term may be zero. If it requires a detour, include the round-trip distance, not only the distance from the highway exit.
Example with variables
Suppose Station A is cheaper by D dollars per gallon and you will buy G gallons. The gross saving is D × G. If reaching it adds M miles and your car costs C dollars per mile to operate, the detour consumes M × C. The station is financially better only when the gross saving exceeds that detour cost, after considering your time and any cashback difference.

Compare equivalent prices
- Use the same fuel grade at every station.
- Compare cash with cash and credit with credit.
- Include membership requirements for club stations.
- Use the same purchase volume when estimating savings.
- Check whether a reward is guaranteed, conditional, or merely advertised.
Practical workflows for common situations
Local fill-up before work or errands
- Open GasBuddy and tap Find Gas.
- Set your fuel grade and payment method.
- Sort by price, then inspect the nearest few stations for report age and access.
- Choose the lowest reliable price that does not require an unreasonable detour.
- If the station is missing, reset filters and search again.
Fuel stop on a long route

Troubleshooting inaccurate, missing, or conflicting prices
A station does not appear
Reset filters, widen the distance, confirm the fuel grade, and check the payment setting. GasBuddy specifically notes that club stations can be hidden by filters, so review Costco or Sam’s Club locations again after clearing restrictions.

Two apps show different prices
First compare the report times. Then compare fuel grade, payment method, and station location. The apps may be reflecting different update moments or different price types rather than a true contradiction.
The displayed price looks too good to be true
Look for an old report, a cash-only figure, a membership condition, or a different fuel grade. If the saving is small, choose a closer station or verify the pump price before leaving the route.
The cheapest station is far away
Apply the net-saving formula with your own gallons, fuel cost per mile, and time value. A lower per-gallon figure can lose its advantage once the detour is included.
A cashback offer does not credit
Check whether the offer required activation, a particular payment method, a qualifying grade, or a receipt submission. Because offer terms change, rely on the current in-app conditions rather than an old promotion description.
