Roku Streaming Stick 4K (model 3820) is the strongest documented Apple TV 4K alternative for an iPhone and HomeKit household. Roku officially lists this model as AirPlay 2 compatible and documents HomeKit control through Siri and the Apple Home app. AirPlay requires the iPhone and Roku to share a wireless network, while HomeKit pairing uses an eight-digit code shown on the television.

Google TV Streamer (4K) and current Fire TV 4K sticks are credible platform alternatives, but equivalent AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support was not established for them in the available manufacturer evidence. Choose one of those only if Google Home/Matter/Thread or Alexa matters more to you than Apple ecosystem integration.

Why Roku is the best-documented Apple TV replacement

AirPlay 2 from an iPhone, iPad or Mac

Roku Support states: “Apple AirPlay lets you stream, control, and share content from your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to your compatible Roku streaming device.” Roku’s compatibility list includes Streaming Stick 4K model 3820 among AirPlay 2-capable players. That covers the core Apple-device use cases: sending a video or photo to the television, mirroring a display when an app allows it, and using an iPhone as the source while playback is controlled on the Roku.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

AirPlay is network-dependent. The Apple device and Roku must be connected to the same wireless network. A guest network, client-isolation setting, VPN routing or a second access point with incorrect network segmentation can make a compatible Roku appear unavailable even when both devices have internet access.

HomeKit scenes, Siri and the Home app

Roku also states: “Apple HomeKit provides an easy and secure way for you to use Siri and the Home app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to control your compatible Roku device.” In practical terms, a compatible Roku can be added to a HomeKit home, assigned to a room and included in scenes or automations supported by the device and television.

HomeKit is not identical to owning an Apple TV. Roku documents control of the Roku player, but the television’s behavior remains part of the chain. In particular, Roku says player power control through HomeKit depends on HDMI-CEC support in the TV. If CEC is disabled, inconsistently implemented or unavailable, a Home app command may control playback without reliably turning the display on or off.

Software requirement

Roku’s AirPlay and HomeKit compatibility guidance specifies Roku OS 9.4 or higher. Before troubleshooting a missing AirPlay or HomeKit option, install the latest available Roku software for the player and restart it. Model compatibility still matters: an update cannot turn every Roku player into an AirPlay 2 device, so check that the hardware is model 3820 or another model explicitly listed by Roku.

How to set up Roku with an iPhone and HomeKit

Prepare the network and hardware

  1. Connect the Roku Streaming Stick 4K to an HDMI input and complete the Roku on-screen setup.
  2. Connect the Roku and iPhone to the same wireless network. Do not use a guest SSID for one device and the main SSID for the other.
  3. Install any pending Roku OS update. AirPlay and HomeKit compatibility requires Roku OS 9.4 or later.
  4. Confirm that the television supports HDMI-CEC if you want HomeKit power commands to turn the display on or off. Manufacturers may use a different name for CEC in the TV menu.

Enable AirPlay

  1. On the Roku, open Settings and the Apple AirPlay and HomeKit screen.
  2. Set AirPlay to On. If the menu is absent, verify the model number and Roku OS version rather than assuming the feature is broken.
  3. On the iPhone, open a compatible video or photo app, tap its AirPlay control, and select the Roku. For screen mirroring, open Control Center, choose Screen Mirroring, and select the Roku.
  4. If the Roku does not appear, keep both devices on the same non-isolated network, temporarily disable VPN routing on the iPhone, and restart the router, Roku and iPhone.

Add the Roku to Apple Home

  1. Open the Roku’s Apple AirPlay and HomeKit settings and choose the HomeKit setup option.
  2. Open the Home app on the iPhone, choose Add Accessory, and follow the pairing flow.
  3. When prompted, enter the eight-digit HomeKit code shown on the television. Keep the code private; it authorizes adding the player to the HomeKit home.
  4. Assign the Roku to the correct room and give it a distinctive name, such as “Living Room Roku,” so Siri commands are unambiguous.
  5. Test a basic Home app control, then test a Siri command. If playback works but power does not, check the TV’s HDMI-CEC setting.

What Apple TV 4K still does better on paper

An alternative should be judged against the current Apple TV 4K specification, not an older model. Apple’s current technical-specification page lists 128GB of storage, Wi-Fi 7, Gigabit Ethernet, Thread networking, HDMI 2.1, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Atmos and an A19 chip.

Those specifications establish a high baseline in several areas:

  • Apple integration: Apple TV is the reference experience for AirPlay, Siri, the Home app and iPhone setup because the hardware and operating system come from the same platform.
  • Wired networking: Gigabit Ethernet is listed as built in. A streaming stick alternative may require a separate adapter or may rely entirely on Wi-Fi; verify the exact product design before assuming a wired connection is available.
  • Smart-home radios: Thread is listed in the Apple TV specification. That is distinct from merely controlling a television through HomeKit and can matter in a Thread-based smart home.
  • Video and audio formats: Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Atmos are all listed for the current Apple TV 4K. Do not infer that every alternative supports the same combination; confirm the formats for the exact model and television.
  • Storage and processing: The listed 128GB capacity and A19 chip provide the comparison point for app storage and interface performance, although the available evidence does not include independent speed tests against Roku, Google TV or Fire TV.

Roku can be the better purchase when HomeKit and AirPlay are the deciding requirements and you do not need every Apple TV specification. It is not documented here as a one-for-one replacement for every Apple TV capability.

Google TV Streamer (4K): best for a Google-centered home

Google TV Streamer (4K) is a credible secondary choice when your household already uses Google TV, Google Home, Matter devices or Thread features. Those are meaningful reasons to choose it: a common interface for a Google-centered home can be more useful than adding another ecosystem solely for AirPlay.

  • Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight

However, the available evidence did not verify AirPlay 2 or HomeKit support from a Google primary source. That is a specific evidence boundary, not a claim that no software update or third-party method could ever provide limited Apple-device functionality. If your buying requirement is “show iPhone video on the TV and control the player from Siri,” treat Google TV Streamer as unconfirmed until Google documents those functions for your model and region.

Questions to answer before choosing Google TV Streamer

  • Can the exact model receive AirPlay 2 from the iPhone apps you use?
  • Can it be added to the Apple Home app, or would you need a separate bridge?
  • Will Matter and Thread devices remain on the same controller when the streamer is placed in your intended room?
  • Does your television support the HDR and audio formats you expect from the streamer?

If the first two answers are essential and cannot be verified, Roku is the safer documented choice for an iPhone and HomeKit household.

Fire TV 4K sticks: viable streaming platforms, uncertain Apple parity

The current Fire TV 4K family includes Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025) and Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen). They are viable alternatives for households organized around Fire TV and Alexa, but equivalent HomeKit support was not established in the available evidence. AirPlay 2 parity was likewise not verified here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because “4K streaming” and “works with an iPhone” are different requirements. A Fire TV stick may run the streaming services you need while still lacking the native AirPlay and Home app workflow that motivated the search for an Apple TV alternative. Check the exact model’s current specifications and regional software support before purchase, especially if Siri control, HomeKit scenes or one-tap iPhone casting is non-negotiable.

Picture, sound and connection checks

Start with the television and receiver, not the streaming box name. A player can output a format only if the TV, HDMI path and audio equipment accept it. Compare Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Atmos, frame-rate handling, HDMI version and CEC behavior for the exact player and display combination.

For an Apple-heavy home, also check:

  • Wi-Fi coverage: AirPlay discovery and playback depend on a stable shared wireless network.
  • Ethernet needs: Apple lists Gigabit Ethernet for the current Apple TV 4K. Determine whether an alternative has built-in Ethernet, an optional adapter or Wi-Fi only.
  • HDMI-CEC: Required for the documented Roku HomeKit player-power behavior. Enable it on both the TV and any receiver or soundbar in the signal path where applicable.
  • Remote and control habits: Decide whether you will primarily use the physical remote, iPhone AirPlay controls, Siri or the Home app. A device that meets a format checklist but frustrates daily control is a poor replacement.

Costs, accessories and availability

No dependable prices, stock status or regional compatibility figures are established here. Retail prices can change, and a low device price may not represent the installed cost.

When comparing a Roku stick, Google TV Streamer, Fire TV stick and Apple TV, account for:

  • the device price in your country and the retailer’s return policy;
  • an HDMI cable or power arrangement if the package does not include what your installation needs;

  • subscriptions for the streaming services you actually use; and

Troubleshooting Roku AirPlay and HomeKit

The Roku is missing from the AirPlay list

  • Confirm the player is model 3820 or another Roku model explicitly listed as AirPlay 2 capable.
  • Verify Roku OS 9.4 or later.
  • Put the iPhone and Roku on the same wireless network, not separate guest or isolated networks.
  • Turn AirPlay on in the Roku’s Apple AirPlay and HomeKit settings.
  • Restart both devices and the router. Temporarily remove VPN or network-security rules that block local-device discovery.

HomeKit pairing fails

  • Start pairing from the Roku’s Apple AirPlay and HomeKit settings.
  • Enter the eight-digit code shown on the TV in the Home app when requested.
  • Keep the iPhone on the same local network during setup.
  • If the Roku was previously assigned to another HomeKit home, remove the old association or reset the player according to Roku’s support instructions before trying again.

Siri controls playback but not power

Roku documents that player power control through HomeKit depends on HDMI-CEC support on the television. Enable CEC using the television manufacturer’s setting, ensure the Roku is connected directly or through a CEC-compatible path, and test again. If the TV does not support CEC reliably, use the TV remote for power while retaining HomeKit for the Roku functions that work.

Bottom-line buying decision

For the specific question “Which non-Apple streaming device has documented AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support for an iPhone household?”, choose the Roku Streaming Stick 4K model 3820, update it to Roku OS 9.4 or later, and plan the installation around the same-network requirement and HDMI-CEC limitation.

Choose Google TV Streamer (4K) when Google Home, Matter and Thread are the priorities and Apple controls are optional. Choose a current Fire TV 4K stick when Alexa and the Fire TV platform are more important than verified HomeKit integration. Choose Apple TV 4K itself when you need the full Apple baseline, including the listed 128GB storage, Wi-Fi 7, Gigabit Ethernet, Thread, HDMI 2.1, A19 processing and Dolby Vision/HDR10+/HLG/Dolby Atmos support.
