The best alternative depends on whether you want to leave Apple Home or simply need different hardware to run it. If you want to keep Apple Home, use an Apple-supported HomePod or Apple TV as its hub. If you want another platform, Google Home and Amazon Alexa are the most straightforward choices; SmartThings suits mixed-brand homes, while Home Assistant offers more control if you are comfortable configuring software and your network.

Before choosing hardware, check whether your devices use Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread. A controller that supports Matter over Wi-Fi is not necessarily a Thread border router, and the distinction matters if you have Thread accessories.

First decide what you mean by an Apple Home Hub alternative

An Apple Home hub connects devices and features within Apple Home. Apple’s Home guidance says a hub is needed for functions such as remote access, sharing, and automations, and for adding Matter accessories to the Home app. Thread-based Matter accessories also need Thread-capable hub hardware or another supported Thread border router.

Keep Apple Home, change the hub hardware

If you want to keep using the Home app, a Google or Alexa device is not a substitute for an Apple Home hub. Apple’s own setup guidance points to supported HomePod and Apple TV hardware. Check Apple’s current requirements for the model and features you want before buying; the fact that a device is a smart speaker, display, or streaming box does not by itself make it an Apple Home hub.

Move to another platform

If you are ready to use a different smart-home app and assistant, consider Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, or Home Assistant. Your existing accessories may work with more than one platform, but compatibility and available features depend on the exact accessory, controller, and setup.

Google Home: check the model, not just the brand

Google says a Matter hub is needed to add Matter devices to Google Home and control them locally and remotely. Its compatibility guidance distinguishes devices that support Matter over Wi-Fi only from those that also act as Thread border routers. The list below reflects Google’s support page as accessed October 13, 2026; check the page again before purchase because device support can change.

Google devices listed for Matter over Wi-Fi and Thread

  • Nest Hub (2nd gen)
  • Nest Hub Max
  • Nest Wifi Pro
  • Google TV Streamer (4K)
  • Google Home Speaker (2026)

Google devices listed as Wi-Fi-only Matter hubs

  • Nest Audio
  • Nest Mini
  • Google Home Mini
  • Google Home
  • First-generation Nest Hub

If you own a Thread-based Matter accessory, the Wi-Fi-only entries do not provide the Thread border-router function on their own. Google also says IPv6 must be enabled for Matter to work properly. Choose a device based on its specific radio support rather than assuming that every Nest or Google speaker has Thread.

Amazon Alexa: a credible alternative, but verify the Echo generation

Alexa is another established platform for Matter devices. TP-Link’s compatibility list, which it says was collected in March 2026, includes several Echo devices and Echo Show 8 generations as Alexa Matter hubs. That supports considering Echo hardware, but does not establish that every Echo model has the same Matter, Zigbee, or Thread capabilities.

Tom’s Guide’s September 23, 2026 smart-home hub roundup names Echo Show 8 (4th Gen) as its overall pick. Treat that as an editorial recommendation, not a universal compatibility guarantee: confirm the exact generation, regional model, and protocol support against the devices you plan to connect.

Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

SmartThings: consider it for a mixed-brand setup

TP-Link lists SmartThings alongside Google Home, Alexa, and Apple Home as a platform for its Matter products. That makes SmartThings a reasonable platform to investigate if your accessories come from different manufacturers. The compatibility information cited here does not establish a best current SmartThings controller model or its exact radio capabilities, so check current device documentation before choosing hardware, especially if you need Thread or another specific radio.

Home Assistant: more configurable, with more network setup

Home Assistant can manage Matter devices as a software-centered smart-home platform. It is a better fit for someone willing to configure integrations and troubleshoot their local network than for someone seeking a simple plug-in controller with minimal setup.

What Thread Matter requires

For Thread-based Matter accessories, Home Assistant needs a Thread border router. Its documentation names a Nest Hub (2nd gen), HomePod mini, or Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 combined with OpenThread Border Router software as examples of Thread-capable setups. A controller running Home Assistant is not automatically a Thread border router; plan for the required hardware and software.

Network conditions that can disrupt setup

Home Assistant documents local IPv6 and multicast discovery requirements for Matter. VLAN separation or multicast filtering can interfere with discovery and commissioning, so a device that appears unreachable may be encountering a network-topology problem rather than a Matter incompatibility. Check that the relevant devices can communicate on the local network and that IPv6 and multicast behavior are not blocked.

Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro: a specialist, not a universal replacement

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup describes the Aqara Camera Hub G5 Pro as a Matter controller with Thread and Zigbee hub functions, a camera, and basic HomeKit support. Those features make it a specialist option for someone who wants a camera-centered device that also serves hub roles. Do not assume its basic HomeKit support replaces every Apple Home hub feature, or that it will support every accessory you own; check compatibility and regional availability first.

Understand Matter, Thread, and multi-admin before migrating

Matter does not mean every hub supports every radio

Matter is an interoperability standard, while Wi-Fi and Thread are different ways compatible devices can connect to a home network. Thread is a low-power mesh network: Thread devices use mesh forwarding to extend coverage and provide alternate paths through the network. A Thread border router connects that Thread network to the local IP network. As Apple Developer documentation explains, these mesh properties are part of Thread’s design; they do not mean that every smart-home controller contains Thread radio hardware.

Multi-admin can let compatible accessories use more than one platform

Matter multi-admin can allow a supported accessory to be added to multiple Matter platforms. That can let you test a new platform or keep compatible devices available in more than one app without moving everything at once. Each platform still has its own controller and device support, and multi-admin does not turn a Google or Alexa device into an Apple Home hub.

Features can depend on how you add a device

Matter support does not guarantee that every manufacturer feature will appear in every platform. TP-Link recommends setting its Matter products up in the Tapo or Kasa app first for full feature access, then adding them to other compatible apps as desired. Check the setup instructions for your own device maker before choosing a migration path.

Choose by accessory, connection type, and setup tolerance

  1. List the devices you need to keep. Check compatibility for each exact light, lock, sensor, camera, and appliance in the platform you are considering. A platform-level Matter listing does not establish that every device feature is available there.
  2. Identify how your Matter accessories connect. Separate Wi-Fi Matter devices from Thread Matter devices. If you have Thread accessories, choose a controller setup that includes a Thread border router.
  3. Pick the experience you want. A speaker may suit voice control, a smart display adds visual controls, and a router or software controller may better suit networking or customization needs. Match the hardware type to how you will actually use it.
  4. Check the specific model and region. Device families can include versions with different radios or platform support. Verify the current manufacturer specifications for the exact model sold where you live.
  5. Plan for your network and setup comfort. Consumer platforms may be simpler to configure. Home Assistant can offer more flexibility, but Matter discovery can depend on IPv6 and multicast working across your local network.
