For an Apple-first home, the right choice depends on whether you need a screen, a home hub, or both. Choose the announced Apple HomeView for a dedicated wall or kitchen dashboard, HomePod mini for the smallest hub that supports Thread, Apple TV 4K when television streaming is also central, and the entry-level 2025 iPad when you want a general-purpose tablet that can stay on the Home app. A hub is still required for Matter setup, automations, notifications and remote access, so an iPad dashboard may need a separate HomePod mini or compatible Apple TV 4K.
Check the exact model, software version, regional availability and Thread capability before buying. Apple’s requirements differ between Matter accessories that use Wi-Fi or Ethernet and those that use Thread.
Best Apple Home displays and hubs at a glance
| Device | Best for | What it contributes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple HomeView | Dedicated Apple Home control screen | 7-inch touch display, Siri control, cameras, and a purpose-built dashboard | Announced product; the reported US$299 price and availability can change by market |
| HomePod mini | Compact, budget-conscious hub | Automatic home-hub setup and Thread support | No display; visual control requires an iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or HomeView |
| Apple TV 4K | TV-centered homes | Home hub, remote access, automations and streaming in one box | Thread capability depends on the exact generation and connectivity configuration |
| 2025 iPad | Multipurpose dashboard | Home app plus browsing, video, apps and communication | Treat it as a display/controller; do not assume it is your current primary hub |
These categories are not interchangeable. A smart display gives you a visual control surface. A home hub keeps the home reachable when you are away, runs automations and notifications, and is part of Matter accessory setup. HomeView is designed to combine both jobs. HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K are hub-first products. The 2025 iPad is primarily a flexible display and controller.
Apple HomeView: best dedicated Apple Home display
HomeView is the most direct answer for someone asking for an Apple-branded smart display rather than a tablet placed near the front door. Apple describes a 7-inch Liquid Retina screen for smart-home management, entertainment, FaceTime and voice control. Its Home Modular face puts favorite accessories in quick reach, while the Home Camera face can show up to nine camera feeds simultaneously. Touch and Siri can control cameras, thermostats, lights, locks and blinds.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the hardware is designed to do
- Dashboard control: Keep frequently used lights, locks, shades and climate controls visible without opening a phone.
- Camera monitoring: The Home Camera face is specified for up to nine feeds at once, useful for a multi-camera entryway or security view.
- Communication: Apple describes FaceTime support, and Tom’s Guide reports a 12MP Center Stage camera.
- Household personalization: Tom’s Guide reports recognition for up to six users, which could make personal controls and communication more convenient.
- Voice and touch: Siri handles hands-free commands while the touch interface provides a glanceable fallback.
Who should buy HomeView
Choose it for a kitchen, hallway, family room or other location where a fixed control panel is more useful than a phone. It is especially attractive when you want a single device to combine a display, camera, voice interface and Apple Home control instead of mounting a tablet and arranging a separate speaker.
Questions to settle before purchase
- Availability: The product and US$299 figure reported by Tom’s Guide are announced information, not a guarantee of current stock or local pricing. Check the Apple Store for your country on the day you buy.
- Camera policy: Decide whether a camera in a shared room is acceptable. Review Apple’s current settings for camera access, indicators, user recognition and processing before installing it in a private area.
- Feed layout: Nine simultaneous feeds may be more useful than a larger single video image if you monitor several entrances; confirm that your camera models expose the views you need in Apple Home.
- Hub requirements: Verify whether your HomeView configuration is the hub that will handle Matter, Thread, automations and remote access, or whether you still want a separate hub for coverage and resilience.
HomePod mini: best compact home hub
HomePod mini is the simplest recommendation when the priority is a reliable Apple Home hub in a small room and a screen is optional. Apple Support states, “You must set up a home hub to add Matter accessories to the Home app.” When HomePod mini is set up, it becomes a home hub automatically.
Why it works well in small setups
- Small footprint: It can sit on a shelf, bedside table or kitchen counter without taking the space a display needs.
- Thread support: Apple identifies HomePod mini as a Thread-enabled home hub for Thread-based Matter accessories.
- Hands-free control: Siri provides voice control even though there is no screen.
- Flexible display pairing: Use an iPhone or iPad for occasional visual control, or add HomeView or an Apple TV for a permanent screen.
HomePod mini is not a smart display. You cannot use it to browse camera feeds, inspect thermostat graphs or tap a scene. If visual control matters, budget for a separate screen. Check the exact generation and current price because Apple’s product lineup and regional pricing change.

Apple TV 4K makes sense when the household already wants a streaming box connected to its main television. Apple Support lists Apple TV as a home-hub device after it is added to a room in the Home app. Apple’s Home page describes Apple TV 4K as a device that can provide remote monitoring, automations and voice control through Apple Home.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Reasons to choose it
- One living-room box: Streaming and Apple Home hub duties share the device already connected to the central TV.
- Large-screen control: The television gives you a bigger visual surface than a phone when you want to inspect cameras or scenes from the sofa.
- Remote features: A configured hub supports the Apple Home functions that require a home hub, including remote access and automations.
Check the exact model before buying accessories
Apple’s compatibility guidance says Thread requirements vary by Apple TV generation and connectivity configuration. Apple specifically identifies Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi‑Fi + Ethernet as a Thread-enabled example. Do not infer Thread support from the words “Apple TV 4K” alone; match the model and network configuration to the accessory’s requirements. If you plan to use Thread Matter sensors, locks or switches, confirm the specification before checkout.
2025 iPad: best multipurpose display
The entry-level 2025 iPad is the most flexible way to get an Apple Home dashboard because it remains a full tablet. Tom’s Guide recommends it as an Apple smart-display alternative: it can run the Home app while also handling browsing, video, apps and communication. Apple presents iPad as a surface for Home controls, but Apple’s current hub instructions focus on HomePod and Apple TV.
Where an iPad fits
- Wall dashboard: Mount it near an entrance or in a kitchen, with a charger routed permanently.
- Tabletop control: Move it between rooms when you need a larger Home app view.
- General use: Reuse the same screen for recipes, video calls, streaming, work or school.
- Lower commitment: If a dedicated display is unavailable in your region, an iPad can provide the screen immediately.
Why an iPad may still need a hub
Do not assume that leaving an iPad in one room gives you the same architecture as a HomePod mini or Apple TV. For Matter setup, Apple requires a home hub. Hub-dependent features include automations, notifications and remote access. Plan for a HomePod mini or compatible Apple TV 4K if your iPad is only the dashboard. Also account for charging, mounting, screen sleep settings and the inconvenience of carrying away the only control panel.

What Apple requires
- Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app.
- Thread-enabled Matter accessories require a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub, such as HomePod mini or a compatible Apple TV 4K model, or a supported third-party Thread border router.
- Apple’s Works with Apple Home guidance distinguishes non-Thread Matter accessories from Thread products and specifies iPhone or iPad pairing requirements.
- Automations, notifications and remote access depend on the supported hub and the current software architecture, not simply on having the Home app installed.
Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Identify the accessory protocol: Read whether the product is Matter over Wi‑Fi, Matter over Ethernet or Matter over Thread.
- Match the hub: For Thread, choose HomePod mini, a Thread-capable Apple TV 4K configuration or another supported Thread border router.
- Check software: Update the iPhone, iPad and hub to versions supported by the accessory maker and Apple.
- Confirm your network: Ensure the hub has a stable connection and that any Apple TV Ethernet or Wi‑Fi choice matches the Thread capability Apple specifies.
- Plan remote use: If you need alerts or control while away, configure the home hub first and test remote access before installing devices in hard-to-reach places.
How to choose the right Apple Home setup
Choose a dedicated screen or a multipurpose tablet
Select HomeView when the screen should always be ready for household controls and you value integrated camera and voice features. Select the 2025 iPad when the display must also serve as a general tablet and you accept the charging and mounting work. A dedicated screen is easier for guests and children to understand; a tablet is more useful when the Home app is only one of many daily tasks.
Choose a compact hub or a TV hub
Choose HomePod mini when you want the smallest hub and already use another device for visual control. Choose Apple TV 4K when a television is the household’s natural shared screen and streaming is already part of the purchase. If Thread is important, compare the exact Apple TV generation and connection option rather than relying on the family name.
Decide whether you need redundancy
A large home may benefit from more than one Apple Home hub so another device can handle hub duties if one is offline. Place hubs where they have dependable network access and practical coverage for the household’s Thread devices. Do not add hardware solely for redundancy until you have confirmed that each device and software version supports the role you want.

Setup sequence for a dependable Apple Home dashboard
- Update devices: Install the latest available software on the iPhone or iPad used for setup, the HomePod mini or Apple TV, and the display you will use.
- Create or review rooms: In the Home app, assign each hub and accessory to the correct room so Siri commands and camera views are understandable.
- Set up the hub: Add HomePod mini or Apple TV to the home. Apple says HomePod mini becomes a home hub automatically; Apple TV becomes one after it is added to a room in the Home app.
- Verify hub status: Check the Home app’s home-hub status before attempting Matter pairing. If the status is pending or unavailable, resolve network or account issues first.
- Pair Matter accessories: Use the accessory’s Matter code or setup flow from an updated iPhone or iPad. For Thread accessories, confirm that a Thread-capable hub or supported border router is present.
- Build scenes and automations: Start with one simple trigger, such as an arrival light or bedtime lock, then test it while home and away.
- Configure the display: On HomeView, arrange favorite accessories and choose the Home Camera face if multi-feed monitoring is needed. On iPad, keep the Home app accessible and configure charging and auto-lock for its mounting location.
- Test failure cases: Temporarily disconnect the display, internet connection or one accessory and confirm which functions continue locally and which require the hub or remote service.
Privacy, cameras and household access
Screen size is only part of the decision. HomeView’s reported 12MP Center Stage camera and user recognition for up to six people may improve FaceTime and personalization, but a camera-equipped device should be placed where everyone in the household expects it. Review camera permissions, status indicators, recognition settings and account access before enabling household sharing.

An iPad can be a lower-camera or camera-free dashboard depending on the model and how you configure it. HomePod mini avoids a screen and camera entirely, while Apple TV 4K keeps the main control surface on a television. Choose the arrangement that fits your household’s privacy boundaries, not only its technical specifications.

Apple announced a Home Collection with products from LG and Schneider Home. Apple says every product supports Thread and can be set up with a single iPhone tap without a separate app or account. Announced categories include cameras, a smart deadbolt, thermostats and temperature or room sensors.
| Announced product | Starting price | Rollout information |
|---|---|---|
| LG Video Doorbell Wired | US$249.95 | U.S., Canada and UK rollout beginning in December; select accessories in early 2027 |
| LG Indoor Cam Plug-In | US$199.95 | Same announced rollout schedule |
| LG Smart Deadbolt Lock | US$349.95 | Same announced rollout schedule |
| LG Smart Thermostat | US$199.95 | Same announced rollout schedule |
| LG Temperature Sensor | US$39.95 | Same announced rollout schedule |
These are Apple-published announced starting prices and timing, not a guarantee of stock in every country. Because the products use Thread, a compatible Thread-enabled Apple Home hub remains part of the planning checklist.
Troubleshooting common buying and setup problems
“The Matter accessory will not add to Apple Home.”
Confirm that a home hub is configured, the iPhone or iPad is updated, and the accessory’s Matter code has not already been claimed by another home. If the accessory uses Thread, verify that the hub is Thread-enabled; a generic Apple TV label is not enough.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
“I can control devices at home but not away.”
Check that the home hub shows as connected and that remote access is enabled for the people who need it. An iPad displaying the Home app does not by itself replace the hub functions Apple assigns to HomePod and Apple TV.
“Thread devices are unreliable.”
Recheck the exact hub model, software and network configuration, then improve hub placement and power stability. A Thread accessory can be Matter-compatible yet fail to join a setup that lacks a Thread border router.
“The dashboard is inconvenient.”
For HomeView, reorganize favorite controls and camera views so the first screen contains only daily actions. For iPad, solve charging and mounting before adding more accessories; a tablet that is frequently moved or asleep is a poor fixed control panel.
Bottom-line buying advice
Buy HomeView when a purpose-built Apple Home screen is the priority and its local availability and final price work for you. Buy HomePod mini for the compact hub role, Apple TV 4K for a TV-centered room after verifying the model’s Thread support, and the 2025 iPad when multipurpose tablet functions matter as much as Home control. In every case, map your Matter and Thread requirements first; the hub that supports your accessories is more important than the screen style.
