For the largest local AI models, choose Mac Studio—specifically an M3 Ultra configuration with up to 256GB unified memory. For a portable workstation, choose a MacBook Pro with M4 Pro or M4 Max and up to 128GB unified memory. The iPhone 17 Pro and M1-or-newer iPad Pro are suitable for Apple Intelligence and supported offline features, but the available specifications do not establish them as replacements for a high-memory Mac running large, third-party language models.
The right choice depends less on the Neural Engine label than on how much unified memory your model, context window and other applications require, whether the workload must travel, and whether you need a continuously powered desktop. Apple publishes compatibility for Apple Intelligence, not a single benchmark ranking every device for every local model.
What “local AI” means on Apple hardware
Local AI runs some or all inference on the device instead of sending each request to a remote service. That can include Apple Intelligence features, an offline assistant supplied by an app, image or audio processing, and third-party language-model runtimes installed on macOS or iPadOS. “Local” does not automatically mean every feature works without a network connection: an application may still need the internet for account sign-in, downloading a model, updates or cloud-only tools.

Apple says that apps can use the on-device models that power Apple Intelligence offline. That statement applies to compatible software and supported features; it is not a promise that every arbitrary model can run on every Apple device. A desktop runtime may also impose its own model-format, operating-system and memory requirements.

Quick recommendation by user and workload
| What you need | Best fit | Why | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Largest documented local-model capacity and a permanent workstation | Mac Studio with M3 Ultra | Configurations are listed with 96GB or 256GB unified memory. | It is a desktop: you supply a display, keyboard, pointing device and continuous power. |
| Portable local models with substantial memory | MacBook Pro with M4 Pro or M4 Max | Apple lists configurations up to 128GB unified memory and a 16-core Neural Engine. | A notebook has less desktop expansion and must balance sustained workloads with battery and thermal limits. |
| Apple Intelligence on a phone | iPhone 17 Pro | Apple’s current compatibility list includes it. | The available specifications do not establish Mac-class memory or broad support for arbitrary third-party local LLMs. |
| Touch-first offline features and tablet use | iPad Pro with M1 or later | Apple lists M1-and-newer iPad Pro models as Apple Intelligence-compatible. | No supplied evidence shows a universal performance advantage over a Mac for arbitrary local models. |
Mac Studio: the strongest Apple tier for larger local models
Why Mac Studio leads on capacity
Apple’s 2025 Mac Studio technical specifications list M4 Max and M3 Ultra systems. M4 Max configurations are listed with 36GB, 48GB, 64GB or 128GB of unified memory; M3 Ultra configurations are listed with 96GB or 256GB. The 256GB ceiling is the largest unified-memory option Apple lists, giving the M3 Ultra Mac Studio the most headroom for a large model, a long context window, multiple models or other memory-hungry desktop applications.
Unified memory is shared by the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine rather than being a separate pool that can be expanded with conventional graphics cards. A model must fit alongside the operating system, runtime, prompt context and any other applications. More capacity therefore expands the set of models and workflows you can attempt; it does not guarantee a particular tokens-per-second result.
Mac Studio configurations
| Mac Studio chip | Apple-listed unified-memory configurations | Best use in a local-AI setup |
|---|---|---|
| M4 Max | 36GB, 48GB, 64GB or 128GB | High-memory single-model work, development and everyday desktop use. |
| M3 Ultra | 96GB or 256GB | The greatest documented capacity for larger models and multi-model workflows. |
What the desktop format changes
- Sustained operation: A continuously powered desktop avoids the battery decisions that affect a mobile workflow. Actual speed still depends on the runtime, model, quantization, context length and thermal behavior.
- Workspace flexibility: You can attach the display and peripherals that suit coding, monitoring or a long context window. The computer itself does not include a built-in screen.
- Expansion expectations: External storage can hold model files, but it does not increase unified memory. Choose the memory tier at purchase.
- Total system cost: Budget for the desktop plus display and peripherals. Apple pricing, seller availability and regional configurations change; no universal price is established here.
When Mac Studio is the right decision
Choose Mac Studio when model capacity outranks mobility, when you want a machine that can stay on for repeated inference, or when you expect to run more than one model or supporting application at once. The M3 Ultra version is the clearest choice when a model’s memory footprint approaches the limits of lower tiers. An M4 Max system can be sensible when 128GB is sufficient and you prefer that chip generation or a lower configuration.

MacBook Pro: the portable high-memory choice
What Apple lists
Apple’s 14-inch MacBook Pro specifications for 2024 list M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, 16-core Neural Engines and unified-memory configurations up to 128GB. That makes MacBook Pro the strongest portable tier documented for local AI in these specifications.

- SUPERCHARGED BY M5 — The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 brings next-generation speed and powerful on-device AI to personal, professional, and creative tasks. Featuring all-day battery life and a breathtaking Liquid Retina XDR display with up to 1600 nits peak brightness, it’s pro in every way.*
- HAPPILY EVER FASTER — Along with its faster CPU and unified memory, M5 features a more powerful GPU with a Neural Accelerator built into each core, delivering faster AI performance. So you can blaze through demanding workloads at mind-bending speeds.
- BUILT FOR APPLE INTELLIGENCE — Apple Intelligence is the personal intelligence system that helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
- ALL-DAY BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Pro delivers the same exceptional performance whether it’s running on battery or plugged in.
- APPS FLY WITH APPLE SILICON — All your favorites, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud, run lightning fast in macOS.*
It can run the same categories of macOS software as a desktop Mac, subject to the application’s support and the model’s memory requirements. A 128GB configuration gives substantially more room than a phone or a typical lower-memory notebook, but it remains below the Mac Studio M3 Ultra’s 256GB maximum.
MacBook Pro versus Mac Studio for local LLMs
| Factor | MacBook Pro (M4 Pro or M4 Max) | Mac Studio (M4 Max or M3 Ultra) |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum listed unified memory | Up to 128GB in Apple’s 2024 14-inch specifications. | Up to 128GB for M4 Max; up to 256GB for M3 Ultra in Apple’s 2025 specifications. |
| Mobility | Built-in display, keyboard, trackpad and battery. | Desktop enclosure; external display and peripherals required. |
| Long, repeated sessions | Can run plugged in, but is still a notebook with battery and portable-thermal constraints. | Designed as a continuously powered desktop; sustained results still depend on software and workload. |
| Model capacity | Best portable capacity in Apple’s listed specifications. | More headroom at the M3 Ultra 256GB tier. |
| Expansion and setup | One integrated system to carry; fewer desktop components. | Separate display and peripherals, with a desktop-oriented workspace. |
| Best reason to choose it | You need your local models wherever you work. | You want maximum documented capacity and a stationary workstation. |
Choosing M4 Pro versus M4 Max
Apple’s specifications establish that both are MacBook Pro options and that the line reaches 128GB unified memory; they do not provide a universal benchmark showing one chip wins every local model. Select the memory tier first. Then consider the model runtime, quantization, context length and whether you will run other applications simultaneously. A lower-memory configuration that cannot hold the chosen model is a worse purchase than a slower configuration that fits it reliably.
iPhone 17 Pro: capable phone-tier Apple Intelligence, not a Mac replacement
Apple’s current Apple Intelligence compatibility page, accessed October 17, 2026, lists iPhone 17 Pro as compatible. That makes it the appropriate phone choice for supported on-device writing, summarization, assistant functions and other Apple Intelligence features available in your region and software version.
The compatibility listing does not provide a third-party local-LLM benchmark against Mac Studio or MacBook Pro, nor does it establish support for every model format or size. Do not interpret “Apple Intelligence-compatible” as “able to load any desktop language model.” Phone workloads are constrained by mobile memory, storage, thermal envelope and battery use, and individual apps decide which models and offline functions they expose.

What an iPhone is good for
- Private or offline-capable Apple Intelligence features supported by the operating system and app.
- Short writing, summarization, classification and assistant interactions designed for a phone.
- Situations where immediate access and cellular mobility matter more than running a large model.
What it is not proven to do
- Run every arbitrary third-party local language model.
- Match a high-memory Mac’s model capacity or sustained desktop throughput.
- Replace a Mac Studio or MacBook Pro for multi-model development and long-context experimentation.
iPad Pro: offline-capable tablet interface
Apple lists iPad Pro models from M1 onward as Apple Intelligence-compatible and says apps can use on-device models offline. That makes iPad Pro a useful tablet-interface option for supported features, especially when touch input, a lightweight setup or a larger screen than a phone matters.
Apple’s listed information does not establish a universal performance advantage over MacBook Pro or Mac Studio for arbitrary local models. Treat iPad Pro as an interface and mobility choice rather than assuming that its M-series chip alone determines desktop-class model capacity. Check the exact iPad memory configuration, operating-system support and the runtime’s iPadOS availability before buying for a specific model.
How much unified memory do you need?
There is no single capacity that is “enough” for local AI. The requirement is determined by the model’s weights, numerical format or quantization, context window, runtime overhead, operating system and the applications you keep open. A model that fits in memory may still be slow, unsupported or impractical at a long context length.

- Name the exact workload. Decide whether you need Apple Intelligence features, a small offline assistant, one third-party language model, image or audio generation, or several models at once.
- Check the runtime’s model requirements. Confirm that the application supports your Apple operating system, chip architecture, model format and desired quantization.
- Estimate the whole memory budget. Include model weights, runtime overhead, context, caches, the operating system and other applications. Do not count only the advertised model-file size.
- Choose headroom, not a barely fitting number. A configuration that leaves no room for context or another application can produce swapping, errors or an unusable experience.
- Match the device tier. Use Mac Studio when the required capacity exceeds the portable ceiling or when you want several models resident. Use MacBook Pro when the same work must travel. Use iPhone or iPad Pro when supported Apple Intelligence features are the goal.
Why quantization and context length matter
Quantization stores model values in a more compact numerical representation, reducing memory demand at a possible quality or speed trade-off. Context length determines how much conversation, code or document text the runtime keeps available; increasing it increases memory pressure. Because these variables differ by model and runtime, a device recommendation without naming them is incomplete.

Performance factors beyond the Neural Engine
Apple’s specifications identify Neural Engine generations and core counts, but a Neural Engine number alone cannot rank arbitrary local-model workloads. The runtime may use the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine or a combination, and support varies by model format. Compare devices using the complete workload:
- Model size and quantization: State the exact model and numerical format.
- Context length: A short prompt and a long document exercise memory differently.
- Runtime: Record the application and version, because acceleration and supported formats differ.
- Thermals and duration: A brief response and an hour-long generation session are different tests.
- Concurrent use: A model sharing memory with an editor, browser, development tools or another model needs additional headroom.
- Power source: A notebook running unplugged has a different practical constraint from a continuously powered desktop.
Apple has not published one cross-device benchmark that ranks every listed device for arbitrary third-party local AI. Any claim that one device is universally faster should therefore identify the model, runtime, quantization, context and test conditions—or be treated as unsubstantiated.

Before you leave a network
- Update the operating system and the AI application while connected.
- Download the model or enable the on-device feature before going offline.
- Sign in and complete any activation the application requires.
- Test a representative prompt with Wi-Fi and cellular data disabled.
- Verify that the app does not silently call a cloud endpoint for the feature you intend to use.
Why an offline feature can still fail
- The model was never downloaded or was removed to free storage.
- The app supports offline generation but requires periodic account validation.
- The selected model is too large for available unified memory.
- The feature is not available in the device’s region, language or operating-system release.
- The application supports macOS but not iOS or iPadOS, or supports only particular model formats.
Apple’s statement that apps can tap into on-device Apple Intelligence models establishes the platform capability, not identical behavior across every app. Check the application’s own offline and compatibility documentation.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBuying checklist for each device tier
Mac Studio checklist
- Pick M3 Ultra if the 256GB maximum is relevant to your model and multi-model plans.
- Pick an M4 Max configuration when up to 128GB is sufficient.
- Include a display, keyboard, pointing device and fast storage for model files.
- Confirm the exact memory tier before ordering; external storage cannot add unified memory.
MacBook Pro checklist
- Choose M4 Pro or M4 Max based on the exact model’s memory requirement, not the chip name alone.
- Consider up to 128GB unified memory for demanding portable work.
- Plan for plugged-in sessions when running long generations or development workloads.
- Check storage capacity because model files can be large, while remembering that storage is not memory.
iPhone 17 Pro checklist
- Buy it for supported Apple Intelligence and offline-capable phone workflows.
- Confirm that the desired language, region and operating-system features are available.
- Do not select it on the assumption that it replaces a high-memory Mac for arbitrary local LLMs.
iPad Pro checklist
- Use an M1-or-newer iPad Pro for Apple Intelligence compatibility listed by Apple.
- Choose it for the tablet interface, touch workflow and portability.
- Verify the specific app’s iPadOS runtime and model support before treating it as a local-model workstation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing Apple Intelligence compatibility with general local-model support
A device can appear on Apple’s compatibility list and still lack support for a particular third-party model. Separate the operating-system feature you want from the model and runtime you plan to install.

Buying CPU or Neural Engine branding instead of memory
For larger models, capacity is often the first practical constraint. Start with the model’s complete memory budget, then choose among chip configurations that meet it.
Assuming a larger disk solves a memory shortage
Model files can live on external or internal storage, but inference requires working memory. Storage may help you keep more models available; it does not turn a 128GB system into a 256GB system.
Comparing devices without naming the workload
“Faster for AI” is incomplete without the model, quantization, context, runtime and session duration. A device optimized for a short assistant request may not be the best choice for a long coding context or several resident models.
Bottom-line choice
Choose Mac Studio with M3 Ultra when maximum documented unified memory and sustained desktop use come first; its listed 256GB option is the highest-capacity Apple configuration in the supplied specifications. Choose MacBook Pro with M4 Pro or M4 Max when you need serious local-model capacity in a portable computer, with configurations listed up to 128GB. Choose iPhone 17 Pro for supported Apple Intelligence on a phone, and iPad Pro with M1 or later for a compatible tablet interface. For every tier, verify the exact model, quantization, context length, runtime and offline behavior before purchase.
