The best ankle brace for basketball is one that offers the support you need while fitting comfortably inside your basketball shoe. Research supports ankle bracing as a way to reduce sprain risk, but it does not establish a single best brace or prove that one current retail model outperforms the rest. Compare support style, adjustability, sizing, shoe fit, and comfort before choosing.
Do ankle braces help prevent basketball ankle sprains?
There is basketball-specific evidence that lace-up braces can reduce acute ankle injuries. In a 2011 randomized trial involving high school basketball players, lace-up ankle braces reduced acute injury incidence among athletes with and without a previous ankle injury. The study did not find that braces reduced injury severity, and its result does not prove that every brace works equally well for every player. Read the trial abstract on PubMed.
A 2018 British Journal of Sports Medicine guideline reports lower sprain risk with bracing or taping: relative risk (RR) 0.30 for recurrent sprains (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.21–0.43) and RR 0.69 for first-time sprains (95% CI 0.49–0.96). The guideline also cites a meta-analysis favoring lace-up or semi-rigid braces over elastic bandaging. Comparisons among external support types remain debated, so these figures do not identify a particular product as best. See the BJSM guideline.

What to look for in a basketball ankle brace
Support style
Lace-up and semi-rigid braces are two common support approaches. Lace-up models wrap the ankle and can use straps to add adjustable support; semi-rigid models use firmer structures to limit some ankle movement. Elastic bandages are less structured. The BJSM guideline’s cited comparison favors lace-up or semi-rigid braces over elastic bandaging, but it does not establish a universal winner between brace types.

Adjustability
Look for a closure system you can secure consistently without creating pressure points. Laces allow you to adjust tension across the brace; additional straps may let you fine-tune support. Follow the maker’s instructions rather than tightening the brace until it feels restrictive.
Sizing and shoe fit
Use the manufacturer’s sizing chart for the exact model. Check the brace inside the basketball shoe you actually wear: a brace that fits in one shoe may feel too bulky in another. Confirm that you can lace and fasten the shoe comfortably and move without pinching or excessive pressure.

Comfort during play
A brace needs to stay comfortable enough to wear as intended. Pay attention to pressure around the heel, ankle bones, and top of the foot, as well as whether the brace shifts during movement. Comfort is individual; product descriptions cannot guarantee that a particular design will suit your foot or shoe.

| McDavid 195 | McDavid describes a lace-up brace with figure-six straps and adjustment without removing shoes. How to choose and check the fit
- Identify your priority. Decide whether you prefer a lace-up design, a semi-rigid support, or another construction. Do not treat the trial evidence for lace-up braces as proof that one named model is best.
- Read the exact model’s sizing guidance. Use its current manufacturer chart; do not assume sizing carries across brands or models.
- Try it with your basketball shoe. Fasten the brace as directed, put on the shoe, and adjust the shoe laces and brace closures until the fit is secure and comfortable.
- Check for pressure or movement. A brace that pinches, feels excessively tight, or shifts may not be a good fit. Recheck the maker’s instructions and sizing before using it for play.
When an ankle injury needs medical evaluation
An ankle brace is support equipment, not a way to diagnose or treat an acute injury. The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine says evaluation depends on injury severity and the location of pain; difficulty bearing weight is an important finding. A child’s ankle injury should be evaluated by a physician because an injury can involve a growth plate. AOSSM guidance on ankle sprains.
