For most people who want to game on a TV, the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro is the clearest pick: NVIDIA explicitly supports GeForce NOW on SHIELD and Android games through Google Play. If demanding native Android games matter more, the Khadas Edge2 is a credible enthusiast alternative based on independent review testing, though it costs more and has limited external I/O. Choose between them based on whether you want games streamed from the cloud, run on the box, or both.
First decide whether you want cloud gaming or native Android games
These are different workloads. With cloud gaming, a remote computer runs the game and streams video to your TV box; the box’s job is to decode the stream and send your controller input over the network. With native Android gaming, the game runs locally on the box, so its processor, graphics hardware, memory, and storage have a more direct effect on performance.
A device that supports a cloud service is not thereby capable of locally running demanding PC games. If you want both options, check that the box supports the cloud service you plan to use and that it can handle the Android games you want to install.

| Box | Best fit | What the available evidence supports | Trade-offs and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro | GeForce NOW and familiar TV-box use | NVIDIA lists GeForce NOW cloud gaming, including 4K HDR support, and Android gaming through Google Play. A current buyer guide also identifies it as a gaming-capable box. NVIDIA SHIELD TV; TechRadar Android box guide | The hardware is an older generation, so the case for it rests on service and software compatibility rather than equivalence to a modern gaming PC. TechRadar reported on October 2, 2026, that the base SHIELD TV had been discontinued while the Pro remained; stock and price depend on region. TechRadar’s October 2026 report |
| Khadas Edge2 | Enthusiasts prioritizing native Android gaming | TechRadar’s buyer guide describes an eight-core 64-bit CPU and 16 GB RAM, and reports excellent performance in high-end Android games as well as usefulness for cloud gaming. TechRadar Android box guide | TechRadar notes that it is expensive and has limited external I/O. The performance description is review evidence, not a standardized benchmark, and does not establish how it compares in every game or configuration. |
| Xiaomi TV Box S | People seeking a value-oriented option | TechRadar calls it a value option and describes its gaming performance as decent. TechRadar Android box guide | The available review evidence does not establish performance on the same testing basis as the SHIELD TV Pro or Edge2. |
| RockTek G2 | Mid-range gaming and streaming | TechRadar describes it as a mid-range box with powerful processors used for online gaming. TechRadar Android box guide | The available review evidence does not establish performance on the same testing basis as the SHIELD TV Pro or Edge2. |
| Mecool KM9 Pro Max | Everyday streaming with modest hardware | Android Central reports Android 12-based Google TV, AV1 decoding, 2 GB RAM, and 32 GB storage, and praises everyday interface fluidity. Android Central report | That review does not establish demanding gaming performance, so it is not a proven hardcore-gaming pick. Its Prime Day price is dated and should not be treated as current. |
How to choose based on the games you play
For GeForce NOW on a television
Start with the SHIELD TV Pro if you want the option with explicit NVIDIA support for GeForce NOW on TV. The service streams the game; the box does not locally run a PC version of it. SHIELD’s advertised 4K HDR cloud-gaming support is conditional: NVIDIA’s requirements page says GeForce NOW Ultimate is required for 4K and HDR on SHIELD TV. Check current service features and availability for your region before paying for a plan.

For locally installed Android games
Consider the Khadas Edge2 if local Android gaming is your priority. TechRadar reports strong results with high-end Android games, but its description is not a standardized comparison against the other boxes here. Check that the specific games you want are available for the device and that you can live with its price and limited external I/O.
For a lower-cost or mixed-use box
The Xiaomi TV Box S and RockTek G2 are possible value or mid-range alternatives, respectively, but the available evidence does not show that either matches the SHIELD or Edge2 in a like-for-like gaming test. The Mecool KM9 Pro Max is better supported as a fluid everyday streaming device than as a demanding gaming machine. Treat these as candidates to check against your specific games and current local prices, not as established substitutes for a high-end gaming setup.

Check the network before expecting smooth cloud play
NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW requirements page specifies these connection thresholds. They are service requirements, not guarantees of low input lag or a good experience in a particular home.
| GeForce NOW use on Android TV or SHIELD TV | NVIDIA-listed bandwidth | Additional requirement or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Android TV, HD up to 60 FPS | 15 Mbps | Android TV hardware must run Android 7.0 or later and support OpenGL ES 2.0 or higher. |
| Android TV, FHD up to 60 FPS | 25 Mbps | NVIDIA recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and specifies less than 80 ms latency to an NVIDIA data center. |
| SHIELD TV, 4K at 60 FPS | 40 Mbps | GeForce NOW Ultimate is required for 4K and HDR on SHIELD TV. |
For the most stable connection, use Ethernet if your box and router setup allow it; otherwise use 5 GHz Wi-Fi. A speed test that clears the listed bandwidth does not measure every factor that affects gameplay, especially the route and latency to the service’s data center.

Pair a supported gamepad before you start
NVIDIA lists SHIELD, Xbox, and Sony DualSense/DualShock 4 gamepads for GeForce NOW on SHIELD. For Android TV, it lists Xbox and Sony controllers; other controllers may need drivers or software updates. NVIDIA states, “You must use a supported gamepad to play games on TVs.” Check controller compatibility with both the TV box and the service, rather than assuming a controller that pairs over Bluetooth will work in-game.

Account for storage, ports, stock, and price
Compare the practical setup, not just video resolution: native-game performance, cloud-service support, controller compatibility, network connection, storage, and available I/O all affect how well a box fits a gaming setup. The Edge2’s limited external I/O may matter if you need to connect accessories or storage. The Mecool KM9 Pro Max’s reported 32 GB storage is a specification, not proof that it suits a large game library.

That is a secondary report, not an NVIDIA announcement; verify local stock and current pricing before buying. The cited sources do not establish comparable current prices or availability for every box in this shortlist.
