The best hi-fi amplifier is the one that suits your speakers and connects to the sources you actually use. For many passive-speaker stereo systems, an integrated amplifier is the simplest place to start: it combines preamp and power amp functions in one component. Active or powered speakers already contain amplification, so they do not automatically need a separate stereo power amplifier.

First, identify the speakers you have

Passive speakers

Passive speakers need an amplifier to power them. An integrated stereo amplifier is a practical starting point because it combines the preamplifier functions—such as selecting sources and controlling volume—with the power amplifier that drives the speakers. A separate preamp and power amp can suit a more modular system, but it means choosing and accommodating multiple components.

Active or powered speakers

Active speakers have amplification built in. Check the speaker maker’s connection instructions before buying an amplifier: a traditional speaker-level power amplifier is not automatically appropriate or necessary. Choose a source component or preamp only if the speakers need one for the inputs or controls you want.

Match the amplifier to the speakers, not just the wattage

Wattage is useful, but a number by itself does not establish whether an amplifier is the right match for a particular speaker or room. Check the speaker’s requirements alongside the amplifier’s output rating and supported speaker load in its current manual. Compare power figures only when their rating conditions and speaker loads are comparable.

The guide’s recommendations are editorial picks; they are not independent testing for this article.

Choose inputs for the sources you actually use

Before comparing models, list your components and the connections each requires. Depending on the amplifier, useful connections may include analog line inputs, optical or coaxial digital inputs, USB, Bluetooth, network streaming, or HDMI ARC/eARC for a television. Feature sets differ, so verify the exact model rather than assuming an input is standard.

Check turntable support before buying

A turntable needs a suitable phono stage. If the amplifier has a phono input, check that it supports the cartridge type you use. If it does not, a separate phono preamp can connect the turntable to a standard audio input. Confirm moving-magnet (MM) or moving-coil (MC) compatibility for the phono stage; do not assume every phono input supports both.

Current amplifier examples from What Hi-Fi?

What Hi-Fi?’s guide, last updated 19 February 2026, names the Arcam A15+ as its overall pick and the Rotel A8 as its budget pick. It also lists the Arcam A5+ as a step-up option, Rega Elex Mk4 as mid-range, Cyrus 40 AMP as premium, NAD C 3050 with MDC2 BluOS-D for streaming, Lavardin ITx as high-end, and Chord Anni as a desktop option. These are that publication’s recommendations, not a universal ranking or independent assessment here. Consult the What Hi-Fi? stereo amplifier guide for its current list and product details.

Its comparison table lists phono stages on the Arcam A15+, Rotel A8, Arcam A5+, Rega Elex Mk4, Cyrus 40 AMP, and the NAD configuration. It lists digital inputs for several models, but not for the Rotel A8 or Chord Anni. Build a shortlist around your setup

  1. Confirm speaker type. Identify whether your speakers are passive or active/powered, and follow their connection requirements.
  2. Check compatibility. Compare the speakers’ requirements with the amplifier’s published power rating and supported load in its current manual.
  3. Inventory your sources. Note the inputs required for your music player, computer, television, turntable, and any streaming setup.
  4. Resolve vinyl needs. Confirm whether the amplifier has a phono stage and whether it supports your cartridge; otherwise account for a compatible external phono preamp.
  5. Consider the whole setup. Include any additional components, cables, controls, streaming features, and physical space the system needs. Avoid paying for connectivity you will not use.

When an integrated amplifier is not the right choice

An integrated model is a straightforward one-box choice for many passive-speaker systems, but a modular preamp-and-power-amp arrangement may suit someone deliberately building a system from separate components. If you own active speakers, prioritize the source connections and controls those speakers need rather than buying a speaker power amplifier by default. In either case, select components around your speakers, sources, space, and budget rather than treating a higher wattage or a review category as a universal answer.
