Google News is the best starting point for most people seeking a personalized alternative to Yahoo: it selects stories around your interests and lets you follow publishers. Apple News is a strong option if you use Apple devices and want a mix of followed sources and editor-curated stories. Availability and features vary by country, language, and device, so check what is offered where you live.
Which Yahoo alternative should you choose?
| Service | Best fit | How the feed is shaped | Availability note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google News | Readers who want a general-purpose personalized feed with publisher controls | Automated selection, personalized recommendations, and followed publishers | Features vary by country and language; rollout of newer controls may differ |
| Apple News | Readers in Apple’s device ecosystem who want both editorial curation and feed controls | Editor-selected stories, followed channels and topics, suggestions, and trending items | Apple News and some features are not available in every country or region |
Neither service is a universal replacement in every location. Before switching, confirm that the app and the specific controls you want are available for your country, language, and device.
Google News: a flexible, personalized general feed
Google says Google News uses automated systems to select stories, with a personalized “Picks for You” area and options to follow publishers. Some content is personalized, and some features require signing in. See Google’s explanation of how Google News stories are selected and its overview of how Google News works.
On August 20, 2026, Google announced new personalization features coming across Search, Discover, and Google News. The announcement describes a Preferred Source button and more direct ways to refine a feed, including asking to see more or less of topics or links. Because rollout can change by region and over time, look in the live app to see which controls are available to you. Details are in Google’s announcement about personalizing Search, Discover, and News.

- INNOVATIVE ART POWER: Turn your simple sketches into works of art instantly using Sketch to Image¹ with Galaxy AI.²
- SEARCHING MADE EASY: Quickly search for just about anything you see on your Tab — all without switching apps — using Circle to Search with Google.³
- MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT: Capture your lecture, meeting, or daily notes and let Note Assist⁴ with Galaxy AI² do the hard work of organizing and even summarizing them for you.
- NEXT-LEVEL NOTE TAKING: Get transcripts and summaries of recorded lectures and meetings, just like that.⁵
- PACKED WITH POWER: No matter what you take on or where you take your Galaxy Tab S10+, enjoy every experience with a powerful tablet processor.
Choose Google News if you want an all-purpose news destination and value automated recommendations alongside the ability to follow publishers. Its approach is not the same as a feed made only from sources you selected: recommendations remain part of the experience.
Apple News: followed sources alongside editorial curation
Apple’s Today feed can mix stories chosen by Apple News editors with items from channels and topics you follow, Siri suggestions, and trending stories. You can follow or block channels and topics, and use “Suggest More” or “Suggest Less” to influence recommendations. Apple also documents an option to restrict Today to followed sources; doing so substantially reduces the variety of stories in the feed. See Apple’s instructions for seeing news stories chosen for you on iPhone.

This makes Apple News a good fit if you want to shape your feed without giving up editorially selected stories. If you want only sources you explicitly follow, use the followed-sources setting where available, understanding that you will see less variety. Apple News availability and individual features differ by country or region.
What the privacy information does—and doesn’t—say
Apple’s privacy disclosure for News newsletters says reading history used for personalized newsletters stays on your device, while aggregate information about interests is sent to Apple to personalize those newsletters. That statement is specifically about newsletters; it should not be treated as a complete description of data handling across every Apple News feature. Read Apple’s News newsletters privacy disclosure for its scope.
