If you want to play now, choose among PS5, Xbox, and PC based on the games you want, the library and friends you already have, and whether you prefer discs, subscriptions, a desktop, or a handheld. Sony has not announced a PS6 launch date in the sources reviewed as of October 4, 2026, so waiting means accepting an uncertain timeline—not a confirmed release window.
Is there a PS6 release date to wait for?
No PS6 launch date was announced in the sources reviewed as of October 4, 2026. In an August 2026 interview, Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki was reported as saying that a launch window for future-generation consoles had not been decided. That is a secondary report, not a formal PS6 announcement; the eventual date remains uncertain. Read the report.
That makes the decision practical: if your current system still meets your needs, there is no confirmed date to plan around. If you want to play now, buy for the games and setup you want today rather than treating an unconfirmed PS6 timeline as a countdown.
Which platform best fits what you want to play?
Start with the specific games and people you play with. A console or PC is a poor bargain if your preferred titles, existing library, or friends are elsewhere. For each option, check the current local price and storage, whether it supports physical discs, and what subscription access actually includes.

PS5: the straightforward choice for PlayStation
A PS5 is the most direct alternative if you want PlayStation games now or already value the PlayStation ecosystem. Sony’s US direct store lists standard PS5 configurations and the PS5 Pro 2 TB; prices and stock are local and can change, so check the live listing for your region before buying. Choose between configurations with your buying habits in mind. If you have physical games or want to buy and resell discs, make sure the exact model you choose supports the disc drive; digital-only models do not. Compare the added cost of any separately sold drive with the configuration that includes one.

PS5 Pro: a higher-tier PS5, not a requirement
Sony released PS5 Pro on November 7, 2024. The company describes an upgraded GPU, faster memory, advanced ray tracing, and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaling. These enhancements apply to games with PS5 Pro support and vary by title; a Pro is not required to play new PS5 games. Sony’s PS5 Pro announcement.
Sony’s 2024 launch announcement said the Pro had 67% more compute units than the then-current PS5 and claimed up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay. Those are Sony’s launch comparisons and vendor claims, not independent measurements or guarantees for every game. The announcement listed a US launch MSRP of $699.99; that is historical launch pricing, not a current quote.

As Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, put it in Sony’s September 10, 2024 announcement: “Whichever console option players choose, whether it’s PS5 or PS5 Pro, we wish to bring everyone the very best gaming experience that fits their needs.” The practical distinction is that Pro is for people who value supported visual and performance enhancements enough to consider a higher-tier model.
Xbox Series S and Series X: choose for games, friends, and format
Xbox is a genuine alternative when the games, friends, or services you care about favor Xbox. Microsoft’s product listing identifies Series S as all-digital, so it cannot play physical game discs. Microsoft announced a worldwide Xbox hardware price update effective August 1, 2026: increases of US$100 for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models, with the 2 TB model to be sunset. These are the announced changes, not live regional prices; local implementation and retailer pricing can differ. Check the current price and storage for the specific model where you live. Microsoft lists Game Pass as a separately sold membership, so include its cost only if you expect to use it.
The available evidence does not establish a current, comprehensive performance ranking that makes PS5 or Xbox categorically more powerful or better value. Compare the games you want, your current library and friends, disc needs, local hardware price, storage, and the subscription you would actually use.

Gaming PC: flexibility, with no established like-for-like price here
A desktop gaming PC can make sense if you want PC storefronts, configurable hardware, or a desktop setup. Unlike a console, a PC can serve broader computing needs as well as gaming, but the right configuration depends on the games and performance you expect. There is no supported current build-price or like-for-like console performance comparison here, so do not assume an equivalent PC is always cheaper or more expensive.
Before choosing, price a complete setup—not just the computer—including any monitor, keyboard, mouse, and upgrades you need. Check that the specific games you care about run on your intended operating system and hardware, and account for any PC library you already own.
Steam Deck OLED: portable PC play, not a desktop substitute
Valve’s Steam Deck OLED is a handheld PC for portability and access to a Steam library, not a like-for-like living-room console or high-end desktop. Valve lists OLED models with 16 GB onboard memory, SteamOS, SSD configurations, microSD expansion, and a 7.4-inch OLED display. Check the current configuration and price before buying. How to compare total cost and game access
Do not compare hardware prices alone. Estimate what you will spend to play the games you want, using the format and services you will really use.
- Hardware and storage: Compare the exact model, current local price, included storage, and cost of any storage expansion you expect to need.
- Games and existing library: Check whether your must-play titles are available on the platform and whether purchases from your existing library carry over. Availability can differ by platform.
- Disc or digital: A digital-only console rules out physical discs. If you buy used games, trade discs, or already own physical titles, factor that into your choice.
- Subscriptions: Compare the specific games and platforms included at the membership tier you would buy, not just the service name. Xbox’s March 2026 catalog post distinguishes games by Cloud, Xbox Series X|S, or PC and by applicable membership tier; it is a dated snapshot, not a complete current catalog or price list. - Setup and portability: A console prioritizes a simple living-room setup; a desktop allows more configuration; a Steam Deck prioritizes handheld play. Choose for where and how you actually play.
