If you need to send money in India without UPI, IMPS is usually the closest alternative for an urgent transfer; NEFT suits transfers where batch settlement is acceptable; and RTGS is intended for payments of ₹2 lakh or more that need real-time individual settlement. These are bank transfer systems, not standalone apps: you typically access them through your bank’s mobile or internet banking, and the limits or fees shown by your bank can differ from system-wide rules.
Which UPI alternative should you use?
| Method | Best for | Settlement and availability | System amount rules | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IMPS | Urgent, routine bank-to-bank transfers | Instant; available 24×7, including holidays, according to NPCI | Up to ₹5 lakh per transaction on channels other than SMS and IVR, according to NPCI | Your bank’s channel-specific limit and fee, and the recipient details. NPCI IMPS overview |
| NEFT | General account-to-account transfers when batch processing is acceptable | 48 half-hourly batches, 24x7x365, according to RBI | No RBI system-level minimum or maximum; banks may set their own limits | Beneficiary account number, IFSC, and your bank’s current charges. RBI NEFT FAQ |
| RTGS | High-value transfers needing real-time individual settlement | Real-time individual settlement; available 24x7x365, according to RBI | Minimum ₹2 lakh; no upper system ceiling | Use only for an amount meeting the minimum; check your bank’s outward fee and beneficiary details. RBI RTGS FAQ |
In short: check IMPS first if speed matters and the transfer is below ₹2 lakh; choose NEFT if batch processing works for you; consider RTGS for at least ₹2 lakh when you want real-time settlement. The bank’s own channel rules still apply.
How the three alternatives work
IMPS: closest to UPI when speed matters
NPCI describes IMPS as an instant, 24×7 service available through participating banks and RBI-authorized prepaid payment instrument issuers. Its stated limit is ₹5 lakh per transaction for channels other than SMS and IVR. That is a system limit, not a guarantee that your bank or chosen channel will let you send that much; check the limit in your banking service before relying on it.

UPI includes additional features, as described in NPCI’s UPI FAQ. The IMPS fee schedule is not uniform across banks, account types, and channels, so verify the amount shown by your bank rather than assuming the transfer is free.

NEFT: account transfers processed in batches
NEFT moves money between bank accounts using batches rather than settling each payment individually in real time. RBI’s FAQ describes 48 half-hourly batches and availability 24x7x365. As RBI puts it, “NEFT is an electronic fund transfer system in which the transactions received up to a particular time are processed in batches.” This makes NEFT a practical option when you can accept batch processing rather than needing an instant transfer.
RBI does not set a system-level minimum or maximum for NEFT, but a bank may set risk-based limits for its customers. You will generally need the beneficiary’s bank account number and IFSC.

RTGS: real-time settlement for larger transfers
RTGS settles each transaction individually in real time and is available 24x7x365, according to RBI. It has a minimum transfer amount of ₹2 lakh and no upper system ceiling. Because of the minimum, it is not an option for smaller payments; for eligible amounts, it is designed for high-value transfers where individual real-time settlement is appropriate.
How to choose and send the transfer
- Decide how quickly the money must settle. For an urgent payment, check whether your bank offers IMPS. If batch settlement is acceptable, compare NEFT. For a transfer of ₹2 lakh or more requiring real-time individual settlement, consider RTGS.
- Open your bank’s mobile or internet banking service. Select the relevant transfer option—IMPS, NEFT, or RTGS. The exact menu names and availability vary by bank.
- Enter the beneficiary details carefully. NEFT and RTGS generally require the account number and IFSC. Use your bank’s beneficiary-name lookup if it is offered. RBI directed participating banks to provide this lookup through internet and mobile banking and at branches, without charge, by 1 April 2025. It uses the account number and IFSC and may not always display a name.
- Review the amount, recipient, limit, and fee before confirming. If a name cannot be displayed, RBI’s direction allows you to decide whether to proceed. Do not treat a system-wide limit as your personal bank limit.
- Keep the confirmation. Save the transaction reference or receipt shown by your bank so you can follow up with it if needed.
What transfers cost
Fees depend on the transfer type and your situation. RBI’s NEFT FAQ, updated 2 September 2024, says online NEFT transfers initiated by savings-account customers are not charged. For other outward NEFT transfers, it lists maximum bank charges, plus applicable GST:

RBI’s RTGS FAQ, updated 31 October 2022, says inward RTGS is free. It sets maximum outward bank charges, excluding tax, of ₹25 for transfers from ₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh and ₹50 for transfers above ₹5 lakh. These are RBI FAQ limits, not a substitute for checking your bank’s current schedule.
NPCI’s IMPS overview states the transaction limit but does not establish one fee schedule for every bank, account type, and channel. Check your bank’s displayed fee before sending.

Check the recipient before you confirm
For NEFT and RTGS, use the beneficiary account-name lookup if your bank presents it. RBI’s 30 December 2024 directive required participating banks to make the free facility available by 1 April 2025 via internet banking, mobile banking, and branches. It relies on the entered account number and IFSC; if a name cannot be displayed, you can decide at your discretion whether to proceed. A lookup is a useful check, but still verify the account number and IFSC yourself.
