The right alternative to the Optoma Photon Beam PK52 depends first on where the projector will sit. For a dedicated theater with room behind the audience, consider the Epson LS9000; if the projector must be close to the screen, the Hisense PL2 is a 4K ultra-short-throw option. The Anker Nebula Mars 3 Air is worth considering only if portability matters more than matching the PK52’s 4K home-cinema brief. These are guide-based recommendations, not results of direct comparisons against the PK52.
What the Optoma PK52 offers as a baseline
Optoma describes the Photon Beam PK52 as a 4K UHD laser projector. Its Photon product page lists HDR10+, PureMotion MEMC, Filmmaker Mode, a triple RGB laser, autofocus and auto keystone; Optoma also says it can produce a 100-inch image from less than 25 cm. Optoma Australia lists 3840 × 2160 resolution, HDR, PureEngine enhancements, a built-in 15W speaker, an image size up to 300 inches and 3,500 lumens. Choose by installation, not resolution alone
1. Measure where the image will come from
Before comparing models, check throw distance, intended image size, lens position and whether the projector will be permanently installed. A long-throw projector suits a dedicated room with space behind the audience. An ultra-short-throw (UST) projector sits near the wall or screen, but its placement and surface need to suit that setup; a compatible screen or suitable cabinet may be necessary. 2. Keep brightness units attached to the numbers
The cited specifications are 3,500 lumens for the PK52 on Optoma Australia’s page, 2,200 lumens for the Epson LS9000 in TechRadar’s listing, and 2,700 ANSI lumens for the Hisense PL2 in What Hi-Fi?’s listing. The sources do not use identical measurement wording, so these figures are not a reliable apples-to-apples brightness ranking. Treat them as the respective product or guide listings, not as a cross-model laboratory result.

3. Check HDR formats against your content sources
Optoma advertises HDR10+ on its Photon PK52 page and HDR on its Australian product page. What Hi-Fi?’s PL2 listing includes Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and HLG. If HDR-format support affects your choice, verify the exact model’s supported formats and the compatibility of your connected sources and playback devices before buying.

Optoma Australia lists a built-in 15W speaker for the PK52. What Hi-Fi? describes the PL2’s audio as average and notes its 4K/60Hz limit. If you want more capable sound or higher refresh rates, check the specific model’s connections and capabilities; an external audio system may be appropriate for your setup.

How to interpret the recommendations
The Epson LS9000 and Hisense PL2 serve different installation paths: the first is TechRadar’s home-theater pick, while the second is a UST option for close placement. What Hi-Fi?’s PL2 assessment also identifies trade-offs in sound, upscaling and refresh rate. None of the cited guides reports a direct PK52-versus-alternative test, so use their recommendations to build a shortlist rather than treating them as proof that one projector outperforms the PK52 overall.
