If you’re considering an alternative to Amazon’s Echo Dot Max, compare speakers on two separate jobs: how they fit your music and room setup, and whether they can control your smart-home devices directly. Sonos Era 300 is a strong fit for spatial audio, AirPlay 2 and a Sonos multi-room system; JBL Authentics 500 stands out for households that want Alexa and Google Assistant on one speaker. Neither manufacturer’s product information establishes that these speakers replace the Echo Dot Max’s Zigbee and Thread hub functions.
Amazon’s official pages identify the model as Echo Dot Max (2025 release), rather than “Echo Max.” This guide uses Amazon’s model name to avoid confusion. Amazon’s Echo device support information, Zigbee hub list and Matter compatibility documentation use that name.
Which alternatives are worth considering?
These two speakers address different priorities. Sonos emphasizes spatial audio and room-by-room expansion; JBL documents simultaneous Alexa and Google Assistant support. Treat them as music-and-assistant alternatives, not confirmed replacements for the Echo Dot Max’s built-in smart-home radios.

Sonos Era 300: choose it for spatial audio and a growing Sonos setup
Sonos presents the Era 300 as a spatial-audio speaker and documents Sonos Voice Control, Amazon Alexa, AirPlay 2 and far-field microphones. It can be paired with an identical speaker or added to a Sonos multi-room or home-theater setup. For wired audio, Sonos documents line-in through its Line-In Adapter. Check whether your devices need a separate hub before replacing an Echo that currently provides those functions.
JBL Authentics 500: choose it to keep Alexa and add Google Assistant
JBL describes the Authentics 500 as a Wi-Fi and Bluetooth speaker with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant available simultaneously. JBL says the assistants can be used for music playback and smart-home control. JBL’s cited page does not establish that the speaker replaces the Echo Dot Max’s Zigbee hub or Thread border-router role, nor does it promise compatibility with every smart-home product or music service. Confirm that your specific devices and services work with the speaker and that any required hub is covered separately.

Will either speaker replace the Echo Dot Max as a smart-home hub?
That depends on the radio and platform your devices use—not just whether a speaker responds to Alexa or another assistant. Amazon lists Echo Dot Max (2025 release) as a compatible Zigbee hub device. Its Matter documentation also lists Echo Dot Max as a supported device and a Thread border router. Amazon says compatible Echo devices support Matter over Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread. Amazon’s listed Matter categories include lights and plugs, sensors, locks and window coverings, thermostats, fans, appliances and robotic vacuums, subject to the individual device’s and feature’s support. A category being supported does not guarantee that every product or feature will work. Neither Sonos’s nor JBL’s cited product page confirms equivalent Zigbee or Thread hub capabilities for its speaker.

Start with the assistant and ecosystem you actually use
JBL documents Alexa and Google Assistant together on the Authentics 500. Sonos documents Alexa, Sonos Voice Control and AirPlay 2 on Era 300. Consider which phones, voice controls and services your household already uses, and verify any specific service you depend on with the manufacturer.

Identify the smart-home radio before you switch
Check whether your lights, locks, sensors and other devices connect through Zigbee, Matter over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread. If they rely on Zigbee or Thread, confirm where the hub or Thread border router will come from after the change. Assistant support alone does not establish that a speaker has the radio or hub role your devices require.

Check inputs and exact-device compatibility
If you need wired audio, Sonos documents line-in on Era 300 through a separate Line-In Adapter. Before buying either speaker, verify the exact smart-home device, radio, region and music service you plan to use. Compatibility can depend on more than a platform’s broad list of supported categories; TechRadar’s smart-speaker roundup provides secondary ecosystem context, but the manufacturers’ current device documentation is the better place to confirm a specific feature.
