Frontier is the closest like-for-like alternative to Spirit’s ultra-low-cost model, but it is not automatically the cheapest. Avelo and Allegiant may work better on specific nonstop routes, Southwest can be competitive when baggage inclusions matter, and Breeze or major airlines may have attractive fares on a route-by-route basis. Compare the same dates and airports, then add the bags, seat choices, ground transport, and flexibility you actually need.
Which airlines are the best alternatives to Spirit?
There is no single cheapest replacement for every Spirit itinerary. The useful shortlist depends first on whether an airline flies a practical route on your dates, and then on the complete cost and schedule.

Frontier’s May 2026 route count is a dated snapshot, not a guarantee that a particular route still operates. Check current schedules for your travel dates. Frontier’s announced rescue-fare booking deadline and its summer 2026 GoWild pass have expired; they are not current offers.

How to compare the real cost of a flight
Start with identical dates and airports. A low displayed fare can lose its advantage once you add a carry-on, checked luggage, seat selection, or a longer trip to an alternate airport. Compare the itinerary you would actually take, not just the first number in a search result.

- Check route and schedule: Confirm that the airline flies between practical airports on your dates, then compare nonstop versus connecting service, departure time, and operating frequency.
- Add baggage and seats: Price the personal item, carry-on, checked bags, and seat selection you need. Check family-seating and change or cancellation terms if they matter to your trip.
- Include airport access: If the fare uses a different airport, account for the time and cost of getting there and reaching your destination.
- Compare final booking totals: Use an airline’s booking page or an approved booking tool for the exact itinerary. Recheck the fare rules and fees before purchase.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Domestic Airfare Consumer Report, Fourth Quarter 2025, published in 2026, includes taxes and mandatory airline charges in reported ticket fares but excludes optional fees such as baggage and seat upgrades. The report says its survey expanded in July 2025 to cover all domestic certificated and commuter carriers using a 40% sample, under new reporting rules. When baggage changes the comparison
Bag rules can reverse a base-fare comparison, so check the policy for the exact airline, fare, route, and booking date.
Allegiant
Allegiant’s fee page lists a free personal item up to 8 × 14 × 18 inches. It lists carry-on fees from $10 to $75, varying by route and by when the bag is added. Those are the page’s stated terms as accessed October 7, 2026; confirm the charge at booking. Check Allegiant’s optional services and fees.

Southwest
For U.S. mainland travel booked and ticketed or changed on or after April 9, 2026, Southwest’s fee page lists first and second checked-bag charges of $45 and $55 for Basic, Choice, and Choice Preferred fares. Choice Extra includes two checked bags. Eligibility depends on fare and date, so check the current terms for your booking. Review Southwest’s optional travel charges.
Frontier
Frontier’s fare-inclusions page lists one personal item as included and directs customers to optional choices or bundles for seats and bags. Price those additions against the other airline’s total rather than comparing base fares alone. See what Frontier includes in its fare.
Check alternate airports and route availability
Avelo can be a useful alternative when its schedule fits, but an alternate airport may add substantial ground travel. Its Spirit-customer announcement identified options including ILG, LAL, and HVN; the airport code alone does not tell you whether the trip is convenient. Allegiant describes nonstop service as a hallmark of its leisure-focused model. Its announcement of new routes also included advertised introductory one-way fares, but those are dated promotions, not current quotes or a promise of availability. Check live schedules and prices. Why there is no universal cheapest replacement
Historical market averages and advertised starting fares cannot identify the cheapest airline for every route and date. DOT airfare figures exclude optional baggage and seat costs, while airline promotions are limited by route, travel date, and availability. The decisive comparison is the final cost and schedule for your own itinerary.
Associated Press reporting on Spirit’s shutdown quoted attorney Marshall Huebner apologizing to people who “may now be priced entirely out,” and former airline captain and Georgetown University instructor Shye Gilad saying, “Dynamic pricing has taken away one of the last structural advantages that low-cost carriers had.” Those comments describe the broader market context; they do not establish which airline is cheapest for a particular trip.
