If your organization still runs Office LTSC 2021, plan a supported replacement before October 13, 2026. Microsoft says support ends that day with no extension and no Extended Security Updates. The practical choices are Microsoft 365 Apps (or a Microsoft 365 plan that includes desktop apps), Office LTSC 2024 for a newer fixed-release deployment, and LibreOffice with an enterprise support provider for organizations willing to change suites.
The right answer depends on cloud and identity requirements, servicing policy, collaboration, document and macro compatibility, offline operation, regulatory constraints, and licensing agreements. None of these options should be treated as a drop-in replacement until representative documents and workflows have been tested.
What happens to Office LTSC 2021 after October 13, 2026?
Microsoft Support states that Office 2021 support ends October 13, 2026, with “no extension and no extended security updates.” After that date, Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security fixes for the product. The installed applications may continue to open and edit files, but continued use is an unsupported security and operational decision.
Microsoft’s lifecycle announcement recommends beginning an upgrade to Microsoft 365 Apps. For organizations that are not ready to move to the cloud, Microsoft identifies Office LTSC 2024 as the supported on-premises path in its Office LTSC 2021 end-of-support announcement.

One Microsoft lifecycle listing currently shows October 14, 2026 for LTSC 2021, while Microsoft’s support article and announcement state October 13. Do not treat October 14 as a grace day: communicate October 13, 2026 as the end-of-support deadline.
The three realistic replacement paths

Microsoft 365 Apps: the cloud-connected route
Microsoft 365 Apps is the natural path when users need supported desktop Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook or other included applications together with Microsoft 365 collaboration and service capabilities. It is subscription-based rather than a single frozen release. Applications receive ongoing updates according to the servicing channel and deployment policy selected by the organization.
When Microsoft 365 Apps is the strongest fit
- Your organization already uses Microsoft 365 identity, storage, mail, meetings, or collaboration services.
- Users need coauthoring and other capabilities that depend on connected services.
- Security and feature maintenance are easier to manage through a continuously serviced desktop product than through periodic major-version projects.
- The organization can provide the required internet access, identity controls, and endpoint-management infrastructure.
Checks before selecting a plan
“Microsoft 365” is not one desktop-app entitlement. Confirm that the proposed plan includes the desktop applications your users need, the correct user or device licensing model, and deployment rights for the organization’s geography and agreement. Local pricing, eligibility, and reseller terms vary by country, seat count, and existing contract, so obtain a current quote rather than reusing an old LTSC price.

Review network and security policy for activation, updates, sign-in, licensing validation, and service access. A disconnected or highly isolated environment may require a different operating model even when users could technically run the applications.

Microsoft 365 Apps support dependency
Microsoft says Office applications connecting to Microsoft 365 services must be in mainstream support for that connection to be considered supported. This requirement is important for mixed estates: an old client might still launch, but its connection to cloud services can fall outside Microsoft’s supported configuration. Use Microsoft’s Office versions and connectivity guidance when setting a retirement date and when checking a long-lived image.
Office LTSC 2024: the supported on-premises Microsoft option
Office LTSC 2024 is a fixed, on-premises release for organizations that cannot or do not want to adopt the Microsoft 365 Apps servicing model. Microsoft’s FAQ says the commercial version has five years of support under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy. The general lifecycle listing gives mainstream support through October 10, 2029: see Microsoft Lifecycle’s Office LTSC 2024 entry.
What LTSC 2024 changes compared with LTSC 2021
- It is a newer supported major release, so it moves the organization off the 2021 codebase before its support deadline.
- It remains a fixed-feature product rather than a continuously changing Microsoft 365 subscription service.
- It is licensed as a one-time commercial release; purchasing eligibility and terms must be confirmed under the organization’s current agreement.
- It does not include the Microsoft 365 subscription services that accompany a Microsoft 365 Apps plan.
Microsoft’s LTSC 2024 overview and deployment documentation should be used to verify supported operating systems, installation technology, update controls, and application coverage for the exact edition being deployed.

LTSC 2024 and Microsoft 365 service connectivity
Microsoft’s connectivity guidance lists October 9, 2029 as the date through which LTSC 2024 connections to Microsoft 365 services are supported. That is one day earlier than the October 10 lifecycle date. The difference is not a grace period or an error to average away: use October 10, 2029 for the product’s general mainstream-support statement and October 9, 2029 when documenting supported connections to Microsoft 365 services. When LTSC 2024 is the better choice
- Endpoints must remain largely on premises or operate in a constrained network.
- Change control requires a stable feature set and scheduled upgrade projects.
- Regulatory, engineering, laboratory, or operational systems cannot accept frequent feature changes.
- The organization needs Microsoft file-format and application continuity but is not ready for subscription services.
LTSC is not automatically suitable for every offline environment. Confirm activation, update distribution, identity, add-in behavior, and any required Microsoft 365 service connections against the actual network design.
LibreOffice and enterprise-supported alternatives
LibreOffice can be appropriate when an organization wants to leave the Microsoft desktop suite and can standardize on a different application set. The Document Foundation’s business guidance explains that the foundation itself does not provide technical support; enterprise support is available through other products and providers.
Where LibreOffice may fit
- Users mainly need word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDF workflows.
- The organization is prepared to standardize templates and document exchange around its chosen formats.
- Procurement prefers a provider-supported alternative to a Microsoft subscription or perpetual release.
- There is time for user training and for remediation of macros, add-ins, and line-of-business integrations.
Risks that require a pilot
File-format compatibility is a workload question, not a marketing claim. Test complex spreadsheets, external links, pivot tables, VBA or other macros, custom templates, mail merge, tracked changes, accessibility structures, digital signatures, and documents exchanged with customers or regulators. Also test printing, PDF export, fonts, language settings, and integrations with document-management or enterprise-resource-planning systems.
Choose a specific support provider only after defining response times, escalation, supported versions, patch responsibility, packaging, and remote-management methods. “LibreOffice support” is not a single standardized commercial service.

How to choose between Microsoft 365 Apps and LTSC 2024

These are operating-model distinctions, not promises that one product will preserve every workflow. Use the same compatibility test for either Microsoft path before committing.
A migration process that avoids unsupported surprises
- Inventory the current estate. Record Office edition and bitness, Windows versions, update channels, add-ins, macros, templates, document repositories, mail and identity dependencies, integrations, accessibility requirements, and machines that are intentionally offline.
- Classify users and workloads. Separate ordinary office users from finance models, engineering workbooks, legal document workflows, publishing templates, shared kiosks, and line-of-business applications. A single replacement decision may not suit every group.
- Define non-negotiable constraints. Document cloud restrictions, data-residency rules, network isolation, authentication requirements, regulatory controls, offline duration, patch windows, and support-response expectations.
- Shortlist the operating model. Select Microsoft 365 Apps, LTSC 2024, LibreOffice with a named provider, or a controlled combination. Confirm the proposed Microsoft 365 plan or LTSC purchasing route with current local procurement information.
- Build a representative test set. Include the largest spreadsheets, macro-enabled files, forms, templates, presentations, tracked-change documents, PDFs, mail merges, and files exchanged with external parties. Include accessibility and assistive-technology checks.
- Pilot with real users. Deploy to a small group that represents each workload. Measure task completion, printing, file exchange, sign-in, offline behavior, add-in operation, and help-desk demand rather than relying on application launch tests.
- Choose deployment and servicing controls. For Microsoft 365 Apps, select a servicing channel and management process. For LTSC 2024, define image creation, update distribution, activation, and retirement dates. For LibreOffice, agree on provider packages, patch cadence, and escalation.
- Remediate before broad rollout. Convert or rewrite macros, replace unsupported add-ins, repair templates, install required fonts, update integrations, and document workarounds. Keep the original LTSC 2021 environment isolated only for a time-limited fallback plan; do not treat it as a supported production state after October 13, 2026.
- Roll out in waves. Migrate low-risk groups first, retain rollback criteria, monitor security and compatibility signals, and schedule the most complex workloads after the pilot has passed.
- Retire LTSC 2021 deliberately. Remove it from standard images, block unapproved reinstallation, update software inventories, and record the date on which exceptions end.
Compatibility checks that should be written into the acceptance test
- Formats: DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, PDF, legacy binary files, CSV imports, and files with embedded objects.
- Automation: VBA, macros, scripts, COM or VSTO add-ins, scheduled exports, and workbook connections.
- Templates and branding: fonts, styles, themes, headers, footers, mail merge, labels, and controlled forms.
- Collaboration: simultaneous editing, version history, comments, review workflows, and external sharing rules.
- Identity and management: sign-in, multifactor authentication, device management, application deployment, licensing activation, and logging.
- Offline operation: how long users can work without connectivity, what functions fail, and how updates reach isolated machines.
- Accessibility: keyboard navigation, screen readers, document structure, contrast, captions, and accessible PDF output.
- Operations: printing, scanners, line-of-business integrations, file servers, document management, backup, and recovery.
Common mistakes and how to prevent them
Treating the deadline as an immediate shutdown
End of support does not necessarily disable the applications on October 13, 2026. It removes Microsoft’s support, security fixes, and bug fixes. That distinction is a reason to migrate early, not a reason to assume the software is safe to keep indefinitely.
Assuming LTSC 2024 is Microsoft 365 without a subscription
LTSC 2024 is a fixed release of classic applications. It does not include the Microsoft 365 subscription services that come with a qualifying Microsoft 365 Apps plan. Document the service dependencies explicitly before selecting it.

Verify desktop-app entitlements, user or device licensing, deployment rights, supported Windows configuration, and regional purchasing terms. The plan that works for one tenant or agreement may not be available under another.

Calling a suite compatible without testing macros
Macro-heavy workbooks and specialized add-ins are frequent migration blockers. Test and remediate them during the pilot; do not discover the problem after broad deployment.
Using unsupported connectivity after the service date
Track the separate product-lifecycle and Microsoft 365-connectivity dates. For LTSC 2024, they are October 10 and October 9, 2029 respectively; for LTSC 2021, service connectivity ends October 13, 2026.

Microsoft’s Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 FAQ describes the five-year Fixed Lifecycle Policy term for the commercial LTSC release. Recheck official lifecycle and connectivity pages when setting procurement, deployment, and retirement milestones because support policies and product details can change.
A practical decision rule
Choose Microsoft 365 Apps when cloud-connected collaboration, current application servicing, and Microsoft 365 integration are priorities and your controls can support the required connectivity and subscription model. Choose Office LTSC 2024 when a fixed on-premises release is the governing requirement and a five-year support horizon is sufficient. Choose LibreOffice only when the organization is willing to validate document and workflow compatibility and to contract with a provider for technical support.
In every case, start the inventory and pilot before October 13, 2026. The supported replacement is the one that passes your real documents, macros, integrations, accessibility checks, identity controls, and offline requirements—not merely the one with the closest product name.
