Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant are the main alternatives to Apple Home. The right choice depends on which exact devices you own, the voice assistant and apps your household prefers, whether local control matters, and how much setup you want to manage. You may not need to replace Apple Home entirely: compatible Matter devices can be shared across supported platforms, and Home Assistant can bridge supported devices into other ecosystems.

Which Apple Home alternative fits your setup?

Platform Good fit if you want Check before switching
Google Home A mainstream app and voice ecosystem, with Matter support for compatible devices. The exact device category, model, and required Google-compatible hub. Matter branding alone does not guarantee every feature will work.
Amazon Alexa An alternative voice-assistant ecosystem with Matter support on some Amazon devices. Whether your specific controller and device combination supports the features you need; available category and model support should be verified.
Samsung SmartThings A separate smart-home platform to consider alongside Google Home and Alexa. The current supported hub and exact device combination. The available evidence identifies SmartThings Station as a Matter controller but does not establish a complete current compatibility list.
Home Assistant A flexible local control layer that can combine supported devices and connect them to other platforms. Always-on hardware, integration setup, and ongoing maintenance. Some devices and features still depend on vendor clouds or internet access.

There is no universal winner established by platform documentation alone. Before buying a hub or migrating devices, check each device’s precise model, protocol, required bridge, and the controls the new platform exposes.

Google Home: a mainstream option with Matter support

Google Home is worth considering if your household already uses its app or voice services and your devices are supported. Google documents Matter support, but adding Matter devices and enabling local Matter control requires a compatible hub. The supported hub list and device-category support can change, so verify current requirements for the specific devices you plan to use.

For Matter devices, Google says in-home commands can travel directly over Wi-Fi or Thread. When you are away, a command goes through the cloud to the home hub, which then carries it out locally. Google also documents Matter Multi-Admin: a compatible device can be shared with another certified smart-home app, provided each platform has a compatible hub and you complete the sharing setup. Supported device categories vary between platforms and over time. Google’s Matter preparation guide explains the standard, while its Matter setup instructions cover setup and cross-platform use.

Amazon Alexa: check the exact controller and device

Alexa is a credible mainstream alternative for households that want to use Amazon’s voice-assistant ecosystem. Matter support is available on some Amazon devices: Home Assistant’s documentation identifies certain newer Echo devices as Matter controllers. That does not establish support across every Echo model or for every Matter device category and feature. Check current official compatibility information for the exact controller and accessory before making a switch. Home Assistant’s Matter documentation describes the controller examples and compatibility considerations it recognizes.

Samsung SmartThings: verify the hub and device pairing

SmartThings is another platform to evaluate, particularly if its app and available devices suit your household. Home Assistant’s Matter documentation identifies SmartThings Station as a Matter controller, but that reference is not a complete or current list of SmartThings hubs, supported device categories, or feature parity. Confirm the current SmartThings support information for your exact hub and accessory combination rather than assuming that a Matter label guarantees all controls will be available.

Home Assistant: a flexible layer rather than a simple app swap

Home Assistant can bring supported devices from different brands and local protocols into one system, and it can expose supported devices to Apple Home, Google Home, or Alexa. That makes it useful when a device is not directly supported by the app you prefer, or when you want to keep Apple Home while adding another control layer. Home Assistant’s documentation explicitly describes using it alongside those platforms rather than choosing only one. See its interoperability FAQ.

Home Assistant is software that runs on hardware kept on at home. The software is free and open source; the hardware is not necessarily free. The official plug-and-play option is Home Assistant Green, but suitable existing hardware—including a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, or virtual machine—can also run it. Depending on the protocols your devices use, an optional radio accessory may be needed; Home Assistant names Connect ZBT-2 for Zigbee, Thread, and Matter use. Home Assistant Cloud is optional and provides hosted features such as remote access and integrations with other assistants and platforms. Local devices using protocols such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread, or ESPHome can continue operating without internet when they communicate locally. A device available only through a vendor’s cloud cannot be reached through that cloud integration during an internet outage, and selected remote or assistant features also require internet. Matter setup can additionally depend on IPv6 networking and controller compatibility; some hardware and software combinations may have missing features or compatibility issues. These distinctions matter if keeping control during an outage is a priority.

What Matter changes—and what it does not

Matter is a smart-home control standard that uses IP networking. Depending on the device, Matter communication uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or Thread—a low-power mesh transport. Thread support alone does not mean a device supports Matter: some Thread products use HomeKit or another vendor-specific control protocol instead. Home Assistant’s Matter integration documentation covers transports, controllers, and compatibility caveats.

Matter can reduce ecosystem lock-in, but it does not promise identical controls, automations, or features in every app. A compatible device may be usable in multiple certified platforms through Multi-Admin, but each platform needs its own compatible hub, sharing must be completed, and category support differs. Apple can remain part of a multi-platform setup: Apple’s developer documentation says iOS 16.1 and later includes Matter support. See Apple’s Matter support documentation for its description of that support.

How to choose without losing device features

  1. Inventory what you own. Record the brand and exact model of each device, its protocol, any required bridge, and the controls or automations you currently use.
  2. Check the target platform’s support. Confirm that the exact device and category work with the specific app and hub you intend to use. Do not rely only on a platform logo or Matter badge.
  3. Decide whether you need a full migration. If your devices support Matter Multi-Admin, you may be able to share them with a second certified platform while keeping Apple Home. Verify hub requirements and complete the platform’s sharing procedure.
  4. Choose your control and privacy trade-offs. Distinguish local in-home control from remote access, and identify which devices or features need a vendor cloud or internet connection.
  5. Match the platform to your appetite for setup. A mainstream app may be simpler if its supported devices meet your needs. Home Assistant offers more flexibility, but requires always-on hardware and integration maintenance.
  6. Test a small group first. Add a few representative devices and check that the controls and routines you rely on work before changing the rest of the home.
