The best alternative depends on how you listen: use a smartphone for the simplest setup, a dedicated Android digital audio player (DAP) for a separate device and local-file library, or a smartwatch when you want music without carrying a phone during exercise. First distinguish files you own and store on a device from subscription-app downloads, which stay subject to the service’s rules.

Use a smartphone for the lowest-friction setup
If your phone has enough free storage and already runs your preferred music service, it is usually the simplest replacement for a portable MP3 player. It can handle both locally stored audio and downloads made inside a music app. Apple’s iPhone guide explains how to add Apple Music and listen offline; Spotify also supports local audio files.
Local files and app downloads are different
A locally stored audio file is managed like a file on your device: you can copy it to compatible storage and play it in a suitable player. A subscription download is kept inside the service’s app. It is not an exported MP3, and access depends on the service’s account and offline policies.
Spotify says Premium subscribers can download albums, playlists, and podcasts in the app. Its current support terms allow up to 10,000 tracks on each of up to five devices, and require each device to connect to the internet at least once every 30 days to retain downloads. These limits and requirements are Spotify’s service rules, not a general property of downloaded music; check the Spotify offline listening page for current terms.

When a phone is a poor fit
- You want music playback to have its own battery and storage rather than compete with everyday phone use.
- You prefer a physical headphone connection but your phone lacks a suitable output.
- You want to avoid carrying a phone’s notifications and other distractions while listening.
Choose a dedicated Android DAP for separation and local files
A digital audio player is the closest alternative when you want a music-focused device rather than another app on your phone. Depending on the model, a DAP can play a local collection, connect wired headphones, and run compatible streaming apps. App availability and service behavior depend on the player’s software and the service, so verify the exact device and app before purchase.
Sony NW-A306 as a documented example
Sony’s US specifications list the NW-A306 with Android 12, Wi-Fi, a 3.5 mm stereo mini-jack, support for a broad range of audio formats, and microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC expansion. Sony lists 32 GB of memory, of which approximately 18 GB is available. The actual usable room for music will depend on the system and installed content. See Sony’s NW-A306 specifications.

Sony estimates approximately 36 hours of continuous MP3 playback at 128 kbps in its W.MUSIC app over the stereo mini-jack. For another music app, Sony estimates approximately 26 hours for the same MP3 bitrate in offline mode over the stereo mini-jack. Those are manufacturer estimates for specified playback conditions, not independent comparative test results; playback time varies with app, file type, and settings. If you have a large local library, a microSD card can add room without relying only on built-in storage. Buy a card only after checking the player’s supported format and capacity. Expansion increases space for compatible local files; it does not turn subscription-app downloads into transferable files.

Use a smartwatch for phone-free workouts
A smartwatch is useful when your priority is running or exercising with fewer items to carry. It can play music downloaded to the watch, but the setup depends on the watch model, music service, headphones, and whether you need a phone-free connection.
Apple Watch and Spotify requirements
Apple’s watchOS 27 guide says music must be downloaded first to play when the watch is not connected to the internet. Spotify says direct offline playback on Apple Watch requires Premium and paired Bluetooth headphones. Spotify also says users can download at least 10 hours of music and podcasts to Apple Watch, depending on the model; that is Spotify’s stated capacity, not an independent measurement. How to decide
- Start with your library. If you listen to local files, confirm the device and player app can read their formats. If you rely on a subscription, check that service’s device support and offline rules.
- Decide whether music needs its own device. Choose a phone for convenience, a DAP for separation and a local collection, or a watch for workouts with minimal carry.
- Check your listening connection. Confirm whether you need a headphone jack, Bluetooth headphones, or both, and whether the selected device supports your intended setup.
- Check storage and battery for your use. Consider library size, available device space, card compatibility, and battery life in the app and playback mode you plan to use.
Which alternative fits which listener?
- Choose a smartphone if it is already part of your routine, has enough storage, and you are comfortable managing music alongside other phone use.
- Choose an Android DAP if you want a separate player for local files, wired output, and potentially compatible streaming apps.
- Choose a smartwatch if your main goal is phone-free music during exercise and your watch, service, and headphones support offline playback.
