If you want to spend less than you would on a new budget smartphone, compare a refurbished phone, a privately used phone, a discounted older model sold new, and repairing the phone you already own. The best choice depends on the exact device and seller: check testing, battery condition, remaining software support, returns, warranty, compatibility, and likely repair costs—not just the listing’s label or price.
How the four alternatives compare

Compare total cost, physical condition and battery, documented testing, software support, seller protections, repairability, and compatibility with your carrier and needs. There is no universally best option or established current price for a particular model in the sources cited here.
What “refurbished” means—and what the label leaves out
In its consumer guidance, France’s DGCCRF describes a refurbished product as a used item whose functions have been tested and which may have been repaired or restored when needed. An ordinary used item does not, simply by being used, establish that such testing or work took place. These are practical definitions from French guidance; wording and legal consequences can differ in other countries. Check the exact phone before paying
- Identify the precise model and configuration. Confirm generation, storage capacity, and regional version; a broad family name can cover devices with different capabilities.
- Read the device-specific condition description. Look for actual cosmetic wear and disclosed damage rather than relying on how the model looked when new.
- Ask what was tested, repaired, or replaced. For the battery, look for an explicit condition threshold, replacement statement, or a return option. Do not assume every refurbisher uses the same standard.
- Test hardware promptly. During the seller’s inspection or return period, check the screen, cameras, buttons, speakers, charging port, microphones, biometric functions, and wireless connectivity.
- Confirm network fit. Verify carrier compatibility, SIM or eSIM needs, and local network bands before buying.
- Check seller identity and terms. Establish whether you are buying from a business or an individual, then read warranty, return, and dispute terms before payment.
- Verify software support for the exact model and region. Check the manufacturer’s current OS and security-update commitment; support dates are model- and region-specific.
- Work out the likely total cost. Add a possible battery replacement or other repair and any needed case or screen protector. Compare that figure with a new older-generation phone and other refurbished offers.
These checks are practical guidance, not certification of a particular marketplace listing or seller. French consumer guidance emphasizes testing and accurate product information; EU consumer guidance also distinguishes purchases from traders and private sellers.
Include software support and repairability in the value calculation
A low purchase price may be less attractive if the phone has little support remaining or needs an uneconomical repair. Check the manufacturer’s commitment for the specific model and region rather than assuming all phones in a product family have the same support period. A 2025 Vodafone Institute report identifies expected software-update availability, along with condition, price, and warranty periods, as factors in refurbished-phone purchase decisions. It reports that 40% of surveyed consumers definitely or probably planned to consider a refurbished smartphone for their next purchase; that survey figure should not be treated as a universal estimate of consumer demand. EU smartphone ecodesign rules set repair-information and spare-parts requirements for covered models, including provisions concerning battery replacement and preparation for reuse. The regulation describes access to specified spare parts for at least seven years after the end of a model’s placement on the market, subject to its scope, dates, and conditions. This does not guarantee a part is in stock or that repair is economical for an individual phone. Consult Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 for the applicable requirements.

Consumer protections depend on where and from whom you buy
Do not assume that a private sale carries the same protections as a purchase from a business. French government guidance says statutory conformity protections apply to purchases from a professional seller and cover new and second-hand goods, while excluding sales between private individuals from that particular guarantee. EU consumer guidance likewise distinguishes trader purchases from private sales. For EU readers, the European Commission says right-to-repair measures began applying on 31 July 2026. Its summary says consumers can request repair of technically repairable products, including mobile phones, and that choosing repair within the liability period extends the legal guarantee by at least 12 months. The regulation and national implementation determine the details; this does not mean every phone can be repaired or that every repair is free. Read the Commission’s right-to-repair summary.
