The best alternative depends on your exact phone: choose a Qi-certified wireless pad or stand if the handset supports wireless charging, or use a compatible wired charger if it does not—or if you prefer a direct connection. A charger rated for 25W does not make an older phone charge at 25W; the phone’s supported charging standard and maximum rate determine what it can receive.
Why a 25W wireless charger may not be the right choice
“25W” describes a charger’s advertised capability, not the speed every phone will accept. The handset’s specifications set the practical limit, and its wireless charging standard must be compatible with the charger. A 25W charger may therefore work with an older phone but charge it below 25W—or not charge it wirelessly if the phone lacks wireless charging support.
Qi2 25W is a newer Wireless Power Consortium standard, announced as Qi v2.2.1. The Consortium says Qi2 25W provides nearly 70% more power than original Qi2; that is a comparison between standards, not a guarantee of a particular phone’s real-world speed. The WPC’s July 23, 2025 announcement also describes original Qi2 as offering 15 watts of charging power at its November 2023 launch. Neither figure establishes what an older handset can receive.
Best alternatives, depending on your phone
Qi-certified wireless pad
If your model supports Qi wireless charging, a Qi-certified pad is a straightforward choice for charging on a desk or nightstand. Check the phone’s own maximum wireless charging rate before paying extra for a charger with a higher advertised wattage. The Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi site explains Qi certification and provides a certified-products database for checking certification claims.

Qi-certified wireless stand
A stand uses the same basic compatibility check as a pad, but holds the phone upright. It can be more convenient if you want to see the screen while the phone charges. Choose based on how you use the phone and whether it can sit in the stand with its charging area correctly aligned.
Compatible wired charger
A cable and suitable power adapter are a practical alternative when the phone does not support wireless charging, when wireless charging is limited, or when you prefer a direct connection. Confirm the phone’s connector and charging requirements first. USB-C applies to phones that support USB-C; it should not be assumed for every older handset. Google’s cable and adapter guidance is specific to Pixel phones, so check your own manufacturer’s documentation for other brands.

Check your exact phone before choosing a charger
“Older phone” is not specific enough to identify wireless support, a charging rate, connector, or suitable adapter. Look up the exact model—not just the product family—in the manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation.

- Find the exact model name. Check the phone’s settings, packaging, or manufacturer account if you are unsure which variant you have.
- Verify wireless charging support. Use the manufacturer’s specifications or support page. For example, Google’s Pixel guidance lists supported Pixel models and exceptions. Google says Pixel 3 and later have wireless charging with named exceptions; Pixel 10 and later, excluding Pixel 10a, support Qi2. Google also notes that Qi1.x chargers can work with those newer models at up to 5W. Those details illustrate why support and speed must be checked by model.
- Check the supported rate and standard. Do not use the charger’s maximum wattage as a substitute for the phone’s own specifications. Qi-certified products are designed for cross-manufacturer compatibility, but the WPC says full Qi2 benefits and speeds require similar generations of phone and charger.
- Check case fit and alignment. A thick or otherwise obstructive case, accessory, or poor placement can interfere with charging. Center the phone on the pad and consult the phone and charger guidance about cases.
- If choosing wired charging, confirm the connector and adapter requirements. Match the cable and adapter to the exact phone rather than assuming USB-C or a particular power rating.

- Google Pixel: Google’s support page identifies Pixel models with wireless charging and named exceptions. It says Pixel 10 and later, except Pixel 10a, support Qi2; it also notes that Qi1.x chargers can charge those models at up to 5W. Consult the current Pixel charging guidance for the model you own.
- Samsung Galaxy: Samsung lists numerous Galaxy S and Note models as compatible with wireless charging, while stating that Galaxy A, XCover, and Tab series devices are not. Its wireless-charging troubleshooting page also advises centering the phone, removing potentially obstructive cases or accessories, and checking charger certification. Because the page is updated over time and covers many models, verify your specific device.
Pad, stand, or cable: a quick decision guide

What to do if wireless charging does not work
First confirm the phone actually supports wireless charging; a compatible-looking charger cannot add that feature to an unsupported handset. If support is confirmed, center the phone on the charging surface, remove accessories or a case that may obstruct charging, and verify that the charger is certified and appropriate for the phone’s standard. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance recommends these checks for compatible Galaxy phones. If they do not resolve the issue, consult the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model.
