AirPods Pro 3 are the best starting point for most callers who want an in-ear fit, a secure seal, and noise cancellation. If you prefer earbuds without silicone tips, choose AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation instead. Both models list Voice Isolation and dual beamforming microphones, but those features do not prove that either one delivers the clearest transmitted voice in every app or environment.

Which AirPods should you choose for calls?

Choose based on fit first, then consider where and how you call. Apple’s specifications list call features for both models; an independent comparison highlights AirPods Pro 3’s fit and noise-cancellation advantages. The available evidence does not establish a universal microphone winner across every phone, calling app, and setting.

When AirPods 4 with ANC are a better fit

AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation are the alternative for callers who prefer an open fit or dislike silicone tips. Apple lists ANC, Voice Isolation, and dual beamforming microphones for this version. Its open design differs from the sealed in-ear fit of AirPods Pro 3, so comfort and stability may matter more to your choice than the feature list.

What Voice Isolation does—and what it doesn’t tell you

Voice Isolation is a call setting that can enhance your voice and reduce background noise, including wind, for the person listening. Apple documents it for supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac setups; availability depends on the device model and software. Check Apple’s current Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum call guide for compatibility and instructions.

Apple’s June 9, 2025 announcement said that, with the H2 chip, beamforming microphones, and computational audio, users would get “more natural vocal texture and clarity” across iPhone calls, FaceTime, and CallKit-enabled apps. That statement concerned a feature update for AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Pro 2. It is Apple’s description of the feature—not an independent measurement, proof of superiority, or a claim about every app. Apple’s announcement

Don’t confuse noise cancellation with microphone quality

Active Noise Cancellation reduces noise reaching you through the earbuds. Microphone processing affects the voice sent to the other caller. They address different sides of a conversation: ANC can make it easier for you to hear, but its presence alone does not establish how clearly the other person hears you.

How to make the choice

  1. Decide whether you want silicone tips. Choose AirPods Pro 3 if you want an in-ear seal and secure fit; choose AirPods 4 with ANC if you prefer an open fit.
  2. Think about your surroundings. If you regularly take calls around noise, consider both your need to hear comfortably and the call’s microphone processing; they are separate concerns.
  3. Check your Apple device and software. Voice Isolation is available only on supported setups. During a compatible call, try it and assess whether it helps in your actual environment.
  4. Test your usual calling app and fit. A quiet-room call may not predict results in wind, traffic, or another app. If possible, check how your voice sounds to the other person in the situations that matter to you.
  5. Check current price and availability before buying. They change over time, and the cited specifications and comparison do not establish current pricing.
