There is no independently established “best” airbrush cleaner for every paint. Choose one for the paint or medium you spray, follow that maker’s compatibility guidance, and use a quick flush for routine color changes rather than treating every cleaning as a deep clean. Iwata-Medea, Createx 5618, and Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner are documented options, but the available manufacturer information does not establish a universal winner.
How to choose an airbrush cleaner
Start with the paint or medium, not a broad “all-purpose” label. Check its manufacturer’s cleaning recommendation and confirm that the cleaner suits both the material and your airbrush. Iwata advises contacting the material maker when you are unsure which cleaner to use: Iwata’s paint guidance.
- Match the chemistry: Use a cleaner whose stated applications include your paint or medium. Do not assume a product that works with one water-based or acrylic paint will work with every paint in that category.
- Match the task: A brief flush between colors differs from end-of-session maintenance or clearing a clog.
- Follow the brush maker’s care instructions: Check which parts may be removed, cleaned, or soaked, and handle the needle and nozzle carefully.
Documented cleaner options
| Cleaner | What the manufacturer or supplier documents | When it may be relevant |
|---|---|---|
| Iwata-Medea Airbrush Cleaner | Iwata describes it as a ready-to-use, general-purpose cleaner and lists water-based and acrylic paints among its stated applications. This is a manufacturer claim, not an independent performance ranking. Iwata product page | A starting candidate for users of compatible water-based or acrylic paints; verify the exact paint system. |
| Createx 5618 Airbrush Cleaner | Createx lists the cleaner and related safety documentation; its Germany shop lists item 5618-08 in a 240 ml size. Createx technical information and Createx Germany listing | A named option for Createx users. Consult the current technical and safety information for your region and application. |
| Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner 71.099 / 71.199 | Vallejo safety information identifies these product references, and its catalogue lists Vallejo Airbrush Cleaner. These sources document products and manufacturer guidance, not independent head-to-head tests. They do not establish which cleaner is strongest, fastest, best value, or best overall.

Between colors
- Empty leftover paint from the cup.
- Wipe or rinse the cup as appropriate for your paint and brush.
- Add suitable cleaner or water and spray until the spray runs clear. Iwata gives this as its between-color and end-of-session flushing guidance: Iwata airbrush cleaning instructions.
- Contain the spray in a spray-out pot or on a paper towel; Iwata’s FAQ recommends a spray-out pot: Iwata FAQ.
At the end of a session
Flush until clear, then follow the airbrush maker’s procedure for the needle and paint-contact passages as needed. Iwata distinguishes routine flushing from deeper cleaning; a full teardown is not automatically required after every session.

If the brush is clogged or spraying unevenly
Use the manufacturer’s deeper-cleaning procedure rather than relying on repeated quick flushes. Clean only the paint-contact areas specified in the instructions, and take care with delicate needle and nozzle parts. Small cleaning brushes or pipe cleaners can help clean passages; use them in accordance with the brush maker’s directions.
If paint has dried on removable parts
Iwata says specified removable nozzle and cap parts may be soaked in Medea cleaner or a suitable solvent for no more than 10 minutes to loosen paint, then brushed. The permitted parts and cleaning steps are defined in Iwata’s cleaning guide. Never leave cleaning agents in the fluid cup for storage.
